Lol... well Capcom kind of did it to themselves with their business practices. A lot of what killed this game was everyone finding out about the "DLC" characters being on disc and held back for more money.
That said, Capcom has also chosen specifically not to release products people wanted like their crossover RPG series and such. They are probably "stumped" simply because of the corner they backed themselves into.
Right now Capcom could probably do a fairly decent business by releasing the games people wanted over the last few years at a discounted price, perhaps in collections. They won't do it, but that could make them a fair profit, like most companies though they are shooting for the sky and simply making a profit isn't enough.
I suppose they could get by doing say Capcom Vs. EA or Vs. Activision or whatever, some of the big publishers of PC games have decent stables of characters, enough to put together a dozen or so for a fighting game (since I'm guessing crossover RPGs are still off the table for North America, except as obscure under the table things like Chaos Wars).
They could also do something like Capcom Vs. The Universe, and negotiate to take a couple of things from half a dozen differant companies rather than just one other company/franchise.
