Capcom Says Resident Evil 6 Will Be "Different"

Capcom's popular horror shooter franchise could be getting another revamp for the next go-around.

For all its popularity, Resident Evil has had a difficult time establishing its own identity in recent installments. Resident Evil 4 was a groundbreaking change in the series, sacrificing some of the horror elements for gameplay that was, you know, actually fun - and Resident Evil 5 moved further away from the series' roots.

What about the next one? In an interview with Spanish-language publication MarcaPlayer [http://www.marcaplayer.com/2011/04/18/xbox360/1303137518.html], Capcom producer Masachika Kawata said that Resident Evil 6 would represent another step for the franchise.

"The series will see a complete renovation with the next entry on every level," said Kawata. "But we can't forget about all the previous entries that have led to the creation of many possibilities for the franchise. I can't say if we're going to make [Resident Evil 6] survival horror or a shooter, but I can say that it'll be totally different."

It's interesting to note that from this quote, Capcom is well aware of the survival-horror-vs-good-shooter dichotomy that recent Resident Evil titles struggle with. There's no question that the gameplay alterations in RE4 made it a better game, but Capcom needs to ask itself: Should Resident Evil be fun to play and a competent shooter, or should it be scary?

I say scary. Scary, if done right, not like Dead Space, is amazing for a game. Considering Capcom's previous work with graphics*RE1 remake, RE0* I'd love to see what they could do with a modern console.

While normally I wouldn't be opposed to a reboot of a long-running series that could very well use one, this is Capcom we're talking about, so I'm not holding my breath.

Am i the only one who sees a little bias sneaking in here? It seems to have the assumption that the game needs to be unfun to be scary. So, to answer this question, the game needs to be fun period. At which point you need to decide if you are going to create more of a shooter or more of a survival-horror esque game.

"There'll be a 6 at the end of the next installment."

I'm afraid I'm not very confident in Capcom's ability to innovate. The only reason why Resident Evil 4 was as good as it was was because of Shinji Mikami.

So is it going to be "RE4 different" (i.e. something fresh in a stagnant series that actually turned out decent) or "RE5 different" (i.e. something that kicked the fans straight in the groin and smiled while doing it)?

I won't try to claim I'm not biased here. I couldn't stop playing RE4; I stopped playing RE5 about 20 minutes in. If I hadn't gotten the game for under $10 I'd have been seriously pissed.

Well, in the case of RE past, part of its scariness did stem from (intentionally?) poor design choices - the camera and controls fought you meaning it was hard to run away, etc.

I couldn't agree with this any more. Make the game fun, then decide what to do with it. Fun survival-horror would be ideal.

They're going to give Leon an even worse emo fringe!

Run! Protect your loved ones!

OT: Well, sounds good. I loved the original survival horror, rather liked the innovation in 4 but despised 5. So I'm looking forward to seeing this.

I thought this franchise was finally done, aren't all the big bad guys dead? Been taking tips from Leliana, I guess.

Two cents on the "Scary or shooty" bit: "Scary" is subjective, some may be startled by Dead Space's gory jack-in-the-box imitators, others may be more frightened of those insta-kill water fiends in so many not-even-supposed-to-be-scary adventure games. (Jak and Daxter's lurker sharks, anyone?) Shooting, on the other hand, is shooting. Aim gun, bang bang, things die. Simpler than trying to scare people who may or may not respond properly to even the most elaborate psych-out attempts, I'd say, probably easier to market too. Maybe if they made a game including as many common phobias as possible?

The only RE game I ever played was the first one on my friend's PS1 (RE4 for the PC was late and abysmal, but probably getting Operation Racoon City this year). Maybe it's time to rehaul RE's philosophy? Keep it's recently-acquired shooter elements, but make resources scarce, the mutants more sparsely-spaced but powerful and mostly just-out-of-your-sight, taking design cues less from Dead Space and more from Amnesia.

Once again, coming from someone with very limited exposure to the franchise, but... just a thought.

Why should they even have to ask? Fun game! Fun game! Sacrificing fun for some self-indulgent air of artiness is just pretentious.

On note of a new Resident evil game, I do hope they make it splitscreen co-op again, that shit was awesome playing through with my GF.
Also things to do: Make it so you can actually fucking walk whilst reloading/meleeing/aiming. I was so amazed that they didn't include it in RE5. I mean what the hell sort of special operative is Chris supposed to be??
