So this little gem was canceled by 1C before it ever shipped. As it happens, I picked up a press demo of it at a flea market for $4. Figure, what the heck.. let's check this out! I plan to play it tomorrow night, probably even stream it on twitch.tv for everyone to get a giggle out of. Let's see if it's terrible enough to have been canceled, or if it's actually a good game that just never made it out!

Every game that I've ever played made in Russia was mind-blowingly amazing, so let's hope that bares truth here.

I hope it's good because pirates.

I'll have to check it out if you stream it, should be fun to see how it is. I actually also kind of hope it sucks otherwise I'd be mad that I couldn't get a hold of a copy!

Go to the Assembler site, and dump that shit, or do a crowd funded dump, if you are looking for some money.

It needs to be preserved, like all beta's, and prototypes should be. Such as the newly released Resident Evil 1.5 Proto, or the Simon Wai/Drx Sonic 2 Beta's and Alpha's.

Personally I really dislike Proto hoarders, and most of them come across as general assholes (Goromachida being one them, teasing people with his RE1.5 proto with a blurry video, and with hot chocolate's sexy thing) . Mainly because most games disc/bit rot over time, so it good to be able for everyone to experience it, overwise it will be lost forever.

I've played Spells of Gold which wasn't either mind-blowing or amazing. Not bad, mind you, but it was average. I haven't played Disciples 3 but from what I heard it's in the "meh" category (when it came out apparently it was awful). Also, Big Rigs is made in Russia. I'll let you think over that.

On the other hand, Etherlords was awesome, and Nival Interactive made Heroes 5 which almost my favourite Heroes game (it only loses to 3, because that works quite a lot faster). Ugh, I just checked, and yeah, actually Nival also did Etherlords. And most of the 1C games are in the above average category.

It's a mixed bad, is what I'm saying.

Well, to be fair, Nival also did Allods Online, which can be best described as "a couple nice ideas and a somewhat interesting setting buried under a mountaineous pile of putrid pay-to-win".

Also, 1C is, as far as I know, the only Russian publisher still afloat. And as someone living in Russia I can assure you that they release a wide variety of appaling shovelware and cheap knockoffs(just like any other publisher, really). None of that stuff makes its' way to the West, though, so consider yourself lucky.

I haven't kept a close tab on their catalogue but it doesn't surprise me that's the case. As you said - just as any other publisher, I wouldn't call Russian games inherently good or bad just that they vary.

Dump that shit. Uh...whatever. Pardon the expression.

Seriously though, this is the sort of thing that absolutely needs some form of archiving.

Maybe I should have elaborated. To be fair, I've only played two that I know og, and both of those were super popular award winners over there.

Don't worry if/when I stream it I will definitely link it! I'll probably do it tonight actually to keep myself busy while I wait for Sim City to unlock. It will be at twitch.tv/sargonas if I do and I'll be sure to post here about it here before I start. It will probably be around 7pm PST when I start.

My understanding is that it is essentially a pirate themed God of War knockoff. We shall see! I'm not going to dump it up myself however, because I *do* work in the industry and don't want to cause an undue kerfluffle. That's going into a funky legal grey area I would rather not explore at this time. I did however make a backup of it for future use if need be and have given it to someone with the proper pedigree to hang onto for future use.

Also there is a Reddit thread going on about it for anyone interested: http://www.reddit.com/r/gaming/comments/19nnyz/captain_blood_a_canceled_game_by_1c_this_week_i/

In any case help me get the word out, I only plan to stream this once since I don't want to piss off the wrong Russians!

You shouldn't be so worried.

The worst that can happen is that the company will ask you to remove the dump, which i seriously doubt will happen as there are a metric fuckton of beta's and cancelled games on the web anyway that haven't been flagged by their respective companies. Games such as the aforementioned RE 1.5, Sonic Beta's, and cancelled games such as the near finished Starfox 2, The Fallout Van buren tech demo, Beyond Zero Tolerance, as well as the recently released this year, Half Life 1 (late 1997) Alpha, and the cancelled Faceball game on the Virtual boy.

There's also been a lot of xbox dev kit games which have seen dumps too.

In fact the only case I know when someone got done in for dumping a beta, was when the Half Life 2 Beta's were leaked before the game was even released back in early 2004 I believe.

If you need help on dumping, contact the Assembler on Assemblergames, they have a dedicated forum for community dumps.

Your right, but that's not why I'm worried at all. I'm worried because I am a dev myself and this industry is VERY *VERY* small. You don't burn bridges, because it will follow you everywhere. Dumping canceled games to the public is a sure-fire way to make people look at you cautiously the next time you apply at a new studio. We are a pretty closed knit community and word gets around.

1C is behind the Men of War franchise right?

Most people dumping, and giving away these beta/Cancelled, are devs, or ex-devs (as they have more access to certain things and connections). Hell they even sell beta's to devs, or members of the public when the company folds such as acclaim who sold everything but the kitchen sink literally.

I see why you are worried, but who knows what you might have, there could only be one in the whole world, think about that. Some companies as you probably know don't keep hold of their proto's forever.

You got your proto from a flea market, the company had to of chucked it away to even be there in the first place, so it's not like you are robbing it from a dev, the beta you have is now in public possession.
