Okay, so Im hankering for some video game adaptations to card games. Or even entirely invented video games which just use the mechanics. And the key thing is, they have to be out and playable now, not later :p

So I currently own all three Duels of the Planeswalker games and that Yugioh Double decade duels...or whatever the hell it was called.

Im looking for more in this line of style. Whether they be more full on, but still be based around cards, completely new takes on it, or blatant rip offs, I just wanna fill this itch.

My dealbreakers are microtransactions. Thats...that about it. I dont mind expansions/DLC, so much. Essentially so long as Im paying for an entire quality product, Im okay with paying. But I have no interest in being nickel and dimed, whether it be by buying individual cards, or random booster packs which may or may not include what I want. (The exception to this is if you can earn some form of in game currency to exchange for the booster packs, reasonably.)

And yes, I know there are a few on the horizon, including DotP '14, but Im looking to fill the itch this week, not next month or longer :p

Thanks escapist <3

Find a Gamecube. Now, hunt down a copy of Baten Kaitos Origins. Play it.

You're welcome.

So I left this overnight, and it did not go well :c

Maybe if I bump it up now, a different crowd might have answers for me?

And sorry Vern, but I dont have a gamecube, only the current gen stuff.

I gave away my Yugioh cards when I was like 10...and regretted it.
Now I am playing Yugioh again I spent 10 dollars on crappy random cards I have lots of doubles. Mostly trap and magic cards. My deck gets destroyed.

Not exactly what you're after but close - Etherlords. I've played the second one, so dunno exactly about the first (as in, is it good) but the game is essentially what you'll get if you take Heroes, cut out most parts (town building, army management) and just drop in MtG there. Seriously. You get overworld map, with your hero being having movement per day/turn and you can battle random stuff and other heroes for XP, you can gather resources to buy more cards. That for the campaign only, though, you can also play duels without that.

The actual battles themselves...and most stuff, actually closely modelled after MtG - only instead of 5 colours, you have 4 - black (evil-ish synthetic creatures and harmful other effects), red (chaotic and barbaric creatures with a penchant for fire and lightning), blue (I think mostly air-ish creatures, spells are aligned with air and water, also lots of counteractions and others that can turn the battle into war of attrition), and green (nature and good and vitality and stuff). Each turn you draw cards and can cast them provided you have mana. You can call creatures and they act like you'd expect from MtG - thy can't act immediately but can otherwise either attack or be sent to defend and so on. It really is very MtG like in very many aspects. Probably the biggest difference is that you don't get to manage land - the level of the character determines the mana pool per turn (and the mana turn grows every few turns, too). You can still manipulate the mana pool using spells - to increase/decrease it and such.

I looked into it a bit and it sounds really interesting DoPo, am going to grab it from GoG tonight and give it a spin.

Still open to more suggestions though!

I got a free one for you! It's called Cards against Humanity. Lovely game, lots and lots of fun (provided you have lots and lots of dark humour) and it has a twin on the web! It's even free if you want it in print! (In theory, you still have to pay for the supplies to get it printed, possibly even at a print shop if you want it done "right")

While cards against humanity is great game with friends, its not really what I was looking for.

Though I do encourage anyone who isnt already familiar with it, to round up some friends and give it a shot.

try playing blackjack with a fairly sized assorted pokemon card deck. the dealer basically explains the rules behind each card (it's worth in points, it's bonus effects like how the potion can have you remove any one card you want if you go over) and based entirely in bullshit and friendly horsing around.

don't use yugioh cards though because making up rules for each card would be dumb.

Suck it up and play Magic the Gathering. The game has more strategy than Yugioh could ever dream of. Of course there are several videogames based off of it. You know I would rather play the Pokemon trading card game than Yugioh. The cool thing about Magic the Gathering is that there are so many strategies to win. At first I hated it because I kept losing. Know I found out that my two favorite colors are white and green. Did make a pretty good deck(both online and in real life) did pretty well.

One of my favorite cards in the deck.

Thats a terrible way to sell anything. I already play MtG (Duels of the Planeswalkers ARE MtG) but I gotta say that if I didnt, I certainly wouldnt from your post :/

Im not interested in paying for individual cards, or random booster packs(I already went through that phase years ago). If you'd read the first post you would have gotten that. Im after complete games which use a card format, or cards to augment/faciliate combat or gameplay.

Might and Magic Duels of Champions: It does feature Microtransactions but you unlock the points needed to buy cards through play at a reasonable(ish) rate so you don't ever need to buy cards. It tries to lure you in but even as a free game it's well worth playing. This is the best digital collectible game out by far, almost infinitely better than Magic Online. Faster, more strategic and with an actual matchmaking system.

The Trouble With Robots: A VERY nice little single player game, you get a certain number of cards per round and playing them creates little automated soldiers to fight off enemy robots. It's a ton of fun and has some nice deckbuiling lite elements to it.

Spectromancer: This a competitive game where you get a number of random cards (you get to pick a class which governs where some of them come from). From there on those spells are available to you all the time and every turn you pick one spell to play and one lane to play it in. It has an incredible competent AI that will kick your ass at the highest difficulty (but never cheats) a good long campaign and online play for when you can actually beat the AI (quite possibly never). It's drier than most CCGs but still very good.

Solforge: An amazing deckbuilding game which doesn't have deckbuilding yet. Play the demo because it's free and excellent but you will probably want to pack it in quickly after that because deckbuilding is going to be a big deal soon.

If you have an ipad there's also Summoner Wars (it has microtransactions but the everything pack is about $8 after which you can't spend any more even if you want to), Ascension, Nightfall and Penny Arcade: Gamers vs Evil. Summoner Wars and Ascension are highly recommended, Nightfall and Penny Arcade less so.

I used to play the Pokemon TCG and had a collection of rare and powerful cards. Then, for some unknown reason, I decided to sell them all. I started collecting them again some time later, but it wasn't the same and handed down the responsibilities of collecting Pokemon cards to one of my younger siblings (to which they have quit doing some time ago).

I got into the Yu-Gi-Oh! TCG around the time the first Yu-Gi-Oh! anime appeared on TV. At first, I was collecting the cards for fun, but when I realized that there were several people around me actually using the cards to duel one another, I had to get me an actually deck going. Over several years to tinkering, researching, and getting the right cards, I was able to create a handful (or armfuls because how many cards a single deck consists of) of decent decks that have been able to win against various foes and tactics.

Nowadays, I just check online to see if there are any new cards for me to collect or to tweak my existing decks just for fun.

I will admit that I find it fun and challenging to create a Beatdown Deck of random cards and go up against a coordinated or themed deck. Every time that I have done so, I have always won, proving that the duelist, and not the cards, determines the outcomes of the duels.

Kingdoms CCG, everything (with some patience) can be bought with coins (free money), gems (micro) that you gain up to 5 every 5 days

other than that I never really found great CCG playable without paying some kind of money for booster

I knew you wouldn't have a gamecube. If you did, then you would have Baten Kaitos Origins. And you would never need to ask about card-based games because you would have the best one already.

I've been having a fair amount of fun with a game called Shadow Era on my phone. Plays very much like Magic but is otherwise completely original. Mind you I haven't actually played any other card games of this type since High School, which was ages ago, so for all I know it's shit and I just don't know better.

Still could be worth checking out. They have a PC version as well although I play it on my phone. Great time waster when I'm on the bus or waiting for whatever reason.
