I was randomly browsing the demo section of the xbla when I found this game called "Carrier Command: Gaea Mission". I've tried it and it's good. Really good.

It's an elegant hybrid of FPS, RTS, and some air combat gameplay. The first island sucks because it's a tutorial. but once finished with that the game basically becomes XCOM enemy unknown but real time instead of turn based and soldiers replaced with easily replaceable machinery.

Relatability to machinery aside, this is a fantastic game. Or at least, a fantastic demo. It actually lets you save the game. Even though it's a demo, it lets you save the game. And in that fantastic save state style. It also has autosaves.

The combat is really good for an RTS/FPS/Vehicle combat hybrid. The explosions are fantastic and the controls are smooth once you get used to them. Basically, if you've ever played supreme commander 2 and thought "Man I'd really like to get in the cockpit of my air unit and just blow them up myself", well, now you can. You can only store 8 vehicles at a time though. 4 air and 4 ground. Ground units are amphibious, though so don't worry about boats. You can even equip the vehicles with different weapons and armor.

Try the demo first, like I am. One things for sure though, this is one hell of a dark horse. Nobody seems remotely aware of it.

I think the general concensus at the moment is that the AI isn't very good, possibly the reason for lack of popularity, that's what I've heard anyway.

Well they shot themselves in the foot by doing no marketing at all, this game came out without anyone knowing.

And sadly it must be said that while it is a great idea it was not done right, for the most part it is all very functional but that is all they have, all the genres they put in there have some cardinal sins you just can't do and they did most of them:
- RTS part is bug ridden (units ignore orders at random, they can't find their fucking way even if it's a dead straight line, they get stuck, they won't attack, they won't defend themselves, they won't retreat,... it does happen at random but in an RTS this can not be anything less then 100% execution)
- FPS/TPS part is burdened with AI flipping between shooting dead straight each shot or completely ignoring the target, and the shooting is very flat - you get almost no feedback, the terrain is really messy and you will mostly get beached with vehicles, terrain is also featureless and bases all made from one small item list so unless you stare at the map constantly there is no way of knowing what you are looking at
- there are 4 different units total, not just on your end, it is 4 units across the all "factions" (one of which is a scout drone, another the mother ship, so 90% of the game you do with the remaining 2 units)

And the whole "story campaign" is actually just skirmish with faceless bots and it gives you no real rime or reason to go up against them other then they are unfortunate enough to paint their exact same vehicles a slightly different color, all the unit/structure art seem to come from one tiny batch so you see the exact same thing repeat billions of times.
Then you realize the singleplayer is pointless and you should just get a bunch of friends to do a skirmish clown fight with you, but wait... no bloody multiplayer, a game that comes set up with just grinding it out with units gets no multiplayer...

Now at least it comes at a a lower price then triple A, but it's not that low, and even after all this time of people completely ignoring it they have not slashed the price by a cent.

I got this game ages ago when it first came out in HMV. It is amazing, just don't play the story mode. Skirmish is awesome and makes tons of those little moments of WTF into epic set pieces. Like when I sent in all of my flyers to defend my bomber, and somehow the opponent AI decided to spawn flyers, so it was like the one good scene from Skyline.

I had heard of it, had considered buying it, but all the reviews I've seen were mediocre at best, including from those sources that were looking forward to it and said they enjoyed similar titles like Hostile Waters. Seeing how I'm without income, I wasn't about to drop 20 euro's during the steam sale on the game. I still got Hostile Waters on my gog.com account, so I can play that if I want to.

I played the original version back when I was young: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Carrier_Command
Wasn't all that good then either.
