No Dues Ex?

You test our relationship sometimes Escapist...<.<
Human Revolution is up against Left 4 Dead, the other two are ineligible.
Don't you mean the other ONE?

But either way the first is a classic, a staple of the golden age of PC FPS'... and by itself is largely considered the greatest PC game of all time, by lot of people...<.<

The new one was pretty good... but the original is the only one, out of the two in the series, that should be eligible for greatest game of all time...<.<
In regards to me saying the other 2...

I would agree with you if it was about the greatest games of all time, but unfortunately The Escapist was not around when Deus Ex was out so they can't choose it =(

Hmm would love to know the selection process involved there, some really strange choices.......and multiple games from same franchises :/
My thoughts exactly. Seems like a rather odd collection of "important" games.

For example, I'm noticing that some series have several of their games listed, while others have only one. And in some of those cases, the only game listed for those series are arguably the weakest among them. I'm also noticing quite a few game choices that are arguably bad. At least, in so far as being considered, as the contest put it, "important".

I don't know. Something's off about this one. But whatevs. I shall vote away. :/

Oh, and happy 7th Escapist.

There's 4 Valve games up there, FOUR. I'm not voting for them, they don't need it. This site is one of the biggest Valve fanwank sites next to the Steam forums. While I certainly don't expect HL2:EP1 to do well, I'd bet my years salary that the other 3 go to semi's.
There's also 5 Nintendo games, 4 of Bethesda's and 3 by Bioware, and many more from the same devs, so what's your point? This is a list of the top 64 games, so if a dev such us Valve or Bethesda pump out 4 awesome games, why shouldn't they be given the chance to be victorious?

OT: I like FPSs such as CoD and Battlefield, but they're up against escapist favourite :(. Oh well as least FIFA will get crushed :D.

I could complain about the list, but I won't. There wasn't a single choice in there that wasn't a no-brainer for me. Happy 7th B-day Escapist!

I just noticed the lack of Final Fantasy and thought there must be some of them in the last 7 years... looked up VIII, IX and X... Now I feel old and want to cry! :(

I can't beleive my favourite FF is 12 years old! That is crazy! I didn't think it was that long ago! :/

Resident Evil 4 vs Persona 4?

You're playin' with my heartstrings here, people.
No they aren't. Persona 4 is always right answer.
In fact, Persona 4 is right answer to all questions.
Well, all brackets in this case.
RE, I loved you man, but you must be sacrificed for the greater good.

Why include Oblivion and Skyrim, but not Morrowind? It's like making a 'Greatest Beatle Ever' contest, and leaving out McCartney. :/

And it came out more than seven years ago, so it isn't eligible.

Same deal. Came out more than seven years ago.

Indeed. Tell me, Skopintsev, which Valve game do you think we should've left off?

We discussed the sequels quite a lot, and decided to have more than one from a franchise when we felt that they were significantly different enough to warrant it - or that one had a different set of fans than the other.
And yet you didn't include the *original* Mass Effect, which is definitely more different from its sequels than they are from each other? 2005 was the cutoff year, yes?

(EDIT: Anyway, Persona 4's up there, so that'll get ALL MY VOTES. We can do that, right? :p
Pity it'd be up against TF2 before the finals, though. Both terribly awesome.)

Yes, we left off Mass Effect. We made a choice. You're free to disagree with it, but we didn't think having all three Mass Effects was fair and decided to go with 2 and 3.

"Cast Your Vote for the Greatest Game in Escapist History" You are seriously letting random readers vote on the Greatest Game in Escapist history?

... Yeah that's professional.

But I'm probably just taking this to serious, I'll just pretend it says "Press a button and have a chance at prizes".

"You MUST be 18 years of age or older and a resident of the US, Canada, UK, AUS, or NZ to win".

Well... at least the font is pretty.
Professional? This is supposed to be for fun. We're celebrating our birthday, the entire Escapist community's, and a huge part of that community is the "random readers".

Either way, thanks for taking part!

Fallout 3 for the win!

Yes?
In the same tournament as Fallout New Vegas? Surely you jest, sir!
I do not jest sir!
While New Vegas had infinitely superior DLC to Fallout 3, the main storyline of NV felt too strict to me. At any point while wandering the Capital Wasteland I could have 10+ active quests and I could travel in any direction I wanted. Unlike NV and it's stupid "if you go the wrong way then we will swamp you with high level creatures and force you to go the way we want".

The Capital Wasteland has a hell of a lot more character than the Mojave, mainly helped by the much better music and 3-dog's broadcasts. I didnt even notice NV's music on my Pip-Boy while I was fighting off politics more often than Super Mutants. But humming 'I don't want to set the World on fire' [http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=n9D6GNzpmkM&] while trekking across the Capital Wasteland discovering the Republic Of Dave was more enjoyable than chasing Benny from place to place. You know you will find Benny eventually and there's no mystery to it. Whereas finding your Dad in F3 and fixing the purifier felt a lot more satisfactory than just making peace through superior firepower in the Mojave.
Especially the personal connection to your character that F3 does so much better than NV. It may only be a 20minute section but you see your character grow from a baby to an adult with friends in your home in the Vault. As opposed to being dug out the ground and being assigned a personality by a doctor in a shack.

NV just didn't have the end of the world feel of F3. Of course the Mojave didn't get nuked as much as the Capital Wasteland but I think that's my point. F3 had such a better feel than NV that I'll happily replay it over and over because it will be different every time.

Edit: I'd like to point out that I love New Vegas and Fallout 3. Just Fallout 3 more.

Edit2: Also Fallout 3 led to this;

So you get to take 64 games from the past 7 years, and yet most of them seem to be released in the past THREE years? Uhu, makes sense (and how do you determine which get to be titled "the best"? Metacritic? Salesrecords?)

Oh, I disagree so much with that. The Capital Wastleand felt completely artificial and fake to me; it was clear that things only existed for the sake of the player seeing or interacting with them. Consequently, I didn't care about Project Purity; it's clear that no-one in the Wasteland has any reasonable basis for survival anyway, they've managed for 200 years with no clean water and no source of food so why would it start to matter now? The Mojave actually felt a lot more like a real, living world with people and places that had a reason to be, independent of the player. Plus, I found Three Dog to be a completely insufferable and unlikeable character.

I'll concede that the radio music was better in F3.

As opposed to the Kings? I could not slaughter them fast enough for getting on my nerves. You know... After I sucked them dry of quests and stole their cool robot dog.

Wha...? What was wrong with the Kings?

Although you do bring up another good point in New Vegas' favour; you can slaughter whoever you want.
