So, I'm aware that there are thousands of threads on here about casual gamers sucking and blah blah blah. I'm actually posting because I think casual gamers are more "addicted" to gaming than "hardcore" gamers are.
I've been playing video games since I was 4 and my brother gave me his NES, but I don't consider myself a hardcore gamer because I have a job, a family, etc. so I can't sit around and play video games like I did when I was a kid. However, I still find time to play video games on occasion.
I just noticed though that several people that are getting into casual games seem to have an addiction to gaming. I probably had an addiction when I was 5 and played Kirby's Adventure until my thumbs blistered but I still knew to turn the game off if it was upsetting me. I've seen casual gamers getting really pissed at a game and still keep playing even if they are getting more and more upset without quitting. While I've seen many hardcore gamers get pissed and just say "f*** this game" and eventually turn it off.
I was visiting my parents and saw my mom sneak off to play Bejeweled and started wondering to myself if casual gamers have an addiction or if the majority of them are just experiencing the joys of gaming for the first time and aren't sure how to react. What are your thoughts?

It's possible I suppose, casual games have short levels and thus give short little bursts of victory which could feed an addiction, casual games also usually never "end" (like bejeweled) so there is no reason to move on from one you like. Hardcore games do "end" at some point but multiplayer usually fills a similar role, COD multiplayer and mmo's for example are rife with little bonuses and upgrades and all that shit to keep you coming back.

But I don't think this says anything about casual vs hardcore as addictions usually have very little to do with the thing itself and more to do with something missing or wrong in the persons life and the addiction gives them a sense of validation. So I would guess that the percentage of people who were actually addicted to casual games would be roughly the same as hardcore games since it's more about the person then the game.

(Also welcome to the escapist)

Do you mean the "Fun hobby" type addiction or the "I haven't eaten in 7 days and my teeth are rotting" type addiction?

I mean fun hobby addiction, but they may one day need to sacrifice feeding themselves and brushing their teeth to make sure that the Pig Commander is dead, ha ha.

If it's something that y'can do by whipping your phone out when you're waiting for something, then it's going to take up a lot of your time.
