I do really like the... mature? (not sure if thats the right word...) take on sexuality that this game is taking... it's got sex and eroticism as a main focus of it's game, but not to entice spotty-cheeked horny teenagers (*cough*Dead or Alive!*cough*), but rather because it makes sense within the context of the game.

Sure, feminist's are going to have a field day with this game, but it has some legitimate arguments upon why it's ok. After all, pretty much every other media form have been able to take on the topic of sex with great success (not financially, thats easy, but rather in the sense of not degrading to the "teehee, tits" sort of level), so why not video games? As Extra Credit said, it's important for the gaming industry to be able to tackle such topics if it is to grow as an art form, and I do hope that Catherine will do so :)

OK... so, other than expensive anime porn (with box art like this, it isn't going to be mature), what is the point of this game?
Should check out some of the videos on YouTube about it, along with the 3 or 4 articles Escapist has had on its pages in the last few weeks about it. Maybe then you'll.... er, still be in the dark like the rest of us :p

Theres been clips that show a platformer like game, adventure style settings and like you mentioned a relationship style sim game. It also features mutilated babies wielding rusty serrated blades attacking you in your nightmares, deformed shrieking girls and walking sheep. I think its the sheer level of mystery around this game that makes it that little bit more appealing (which also makes me wonder if it when it comes out the community as a whole will go, "Ahh... meh.")

Turn the two into lesbians and buy a video camera so you can make virtual money off the internet? Coming from Japan, none of this would surprise me.

Also, if it does come here then I can't wait for the Zero Punctuation review. Well, OK, if it does come to Australia.
I actually completely disagree your assessment that it isn't going to be mature. Atlus has always handled adult topics relatively maturely for gaming - identity, sexuality, and the like. Vincent is an effeminate, emasculated male who is having nightmares (which other people are dying from - the plot of the game) regarding his faithfulness to his girlfriend and a mysterious other girl coming on to him.

I don't doubt that part of the game WILL end up with Vincent choosing either Catherine, Katherine or neither depending on the player's actions, but that's hardly the point. And saying that it won't be mature when we've already seen Atlus' Persona team handle sexuality and gender fairly well in Persona 4 (see: Kanji and Naoto and their respectful gender identity issues) is just rather uninformed.

Atlus had better localize this!!!! And include their usual bonuses like a soundtrack CD.

I really like the 360 box-art...I'm don't like Catherine nearly as much as Katherine.
i would have to agree. this game looks really interesting, even if im not into horror games (or havent played an Atlus title before), im looking forward to it.

P.S DAT ASS!

P.S.S Y U NO HAZ HYPNOTOADZ?!?!?!
You mean P.P.S (Post-post-script, not Post-script-script).

So the box art has been made known, but what hasn't been exposed (to my knowledge) is the actual gameplay. I'm damned anxious to see how this thing plays.

huh, that is some good art work.
I really REALLY like the art style that this game is using, though i doubt ill play it.
One thing i do like is pretty much what you said.
"Yo this is a game ABOUT sex".

I may not play it because of it but im happy that they are not hiding it like many things have done.
Though i will defiantly keep an eye on it, the Sheep-man thing has me genuinely intrigued.

I guess this is as good a place as any to say this. Very rarely have relationships been handled maturely in video games, and so I very rarely think that a game should indulge so deeply in them. We should just wait until we have some artistic merit before diving into deep themes of love and sexuality, and then sex itself. Personally, I don't really think that sex itself should be an interactive part of games. Disgusting, trying to emulate such a thing.

As for how uninformed I am on the Persona games... well, I'm not a JRPG gamer, and I'm not a Persona fan, so of course I don't know how they're handled. But if these people were truly that mature, they would come up with better box art. As it stands, it looks like it's trying to be interactive anime porn with a very odd way of covering it up.
And why are you assuming that sex will be an interactive part of Catherine a la God of War? Why can't it just be a plot theme?

Again, Atlus has demonstrated that it is fairly skilled at handling this sort of thing very maturely before. It's trying to do the same here, and frankly I applaud them for taking the initiative. I urge you to look up what they did with Kanji (a rough-and-tumble juvenile delinquent who acts excessively homophobic because he's worried that his skill with sewing and other non-'masculine' habits mean that others might think he's gay) and Naoto (a young woman who wants to be a police officer and so pretends to be a boy because she thinks that cops won't take her seriously as a girl). They've handled sensitive, mature topics before and brushing it off as "interactive anime porn" is grossly ignorant.

I love the box art. This isn't trying to be like X-Blade, where it's just "hey look at the hotties, buy this game to look at this hot chick." the covers are A.) focused on Vincent essentially being emasculated by the two women (or at least helpless because of them) and B.) not shy away from saying "This game is about sex and adult themes." It's erotic, yes, but it's hardly pornographic.

wow. i love that artwork. i didn't know much about this game before (although i heard mention of it everywhere), and reading about it now, i doubt it's the kind of game i'd want to play. but yeah, i'd almost buy it just for the art. both versions, even!

Geez, why does this keep getting reported on? I'm getting a little tired of seeing this game pop up in the news everywhere.

It most likely won't even come to the western market outside of Japan either, making it even more of a wonder as to why the Escapist seems to be following it so vehemently. I know it was made by the team behind Persona, but seriously, guys.

Damn, Atlus, you better localize this game. No doubt this would recieve an "M" rating, and as soon as I would turn of legal age, I'd pick this up in a heartbeat.

For the story and gameplay, obviously.

Nothing else.

I swear! Don't give me that look, I'm being serious here!

Seriously, this does look like a very interesting game and Atlus does have a good reputation for dealing with mature themes, so this could be just the thing I'm looking for.

Please come state-side. Subtitles or not, this looks too intriguing to not exist outside Japan. You can keep your Mother 3 if you want, but only if you give us this

Maybe I'm speaking a bit (please don't interpret this as a pun) prematurely, but this game could really be a milestone in Gamings development as a medium. What other medium doesn't have at least a few examples of exploring sexuality in a tasteful, psychological manner?

Now lets just hope, for the love of god, that this gets an import.

Aw man, I do hope they bring it at least to Europe, all this coverage by the escapist has made me hooked on what the hell it's actually about. Appreciate the box art too.
