I was pressed to start this post after going on youtube to hear an old song i havn't heard in a while, Purple Pills by d12 http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=o7eViKPSkZU . Its a great song, but little did i know there was a censored MTV/RADIO version http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Uuq6HgKgEFQ&feature=related . I was like S*I* what's the point of putting this out? It's not even the real song! So here's some questions i'd like to ask and here you'r opinions
#1) Should they have made an MTV version or not just showed it, because it's not even the real song anymore, there's a diffrence between bleeping and ALTERING THE ENTIRE SONG
For my money, they
shouldn't have, but the issue is much more complex than that.
Take the song Closer [http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=PTFwQP86BRs], by Nine Inch Nails. Forgoing any themes, only absolute morons are going to say Trent Resner isn't a talented musician. That being said, the song is clearly about sex, and not in the subtle way that some people are used to. What's more, the video itself is very graphic.
Should they have aired this on MTV? Eah...no, I don't think so, not if they have to chop it into little tiny pieces to do it.
Did they? Yes, a few times, because people
demanded it. They only showed it a few times, but it was still really cool.
MTV, as a network, has to do what people want it to do in order to stay in business. It is that simple.
#2) Are you affected by censorship like this,
Every now and again, but it's usually stupidly obvious. Nightmare [http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=94bGzWyHbu0], by Avenged Sevenfold, was a strange example; it wasn't just censored for language, but for
time; the song itself is over 6 minutes long. If I recall correctly, the same thing applies to Bat Country, only worse; they cut out almost half the song.
#3) Do you have any other extreme acts of censorship like this
...I'm sorry, I don't understand the question. What?
#4) Overall whats your opinion on censorship?
I can't approve of narrow-minded, self-righteous charlatans arbitrarily deciding what is and is not acceptable for my children, and for me.
...on the other hand, I have to acknowledge that ICP shouldn't be on
Sesame Street, regardless of what I think of them. There's a time and a place to spread your message, and, as an artist, you have to know that.
Call me on the fence about this; you'd be half right.
