I think it's the parents duty to educate their kids on these things when the issue arises. That being said, some people shouldn't be parents until they can come to grips with that reality. As for censorship, I'll let those who have been censored speak about their experiences. Personally, I'm against it.

Censorship is wrong on almost every level. If you're uncomfortable listening to a song with profanity, just don't listen or ***** about it on the internet.

I can understand censorship in SOME cases. for example, a movie like Ghostbusters is generally accepted as family friendly, except for a few sexual remarks and a few "shit"s. so I can see a network takig this out, a few jokes are lost, but the movie's still a whole.

however, taking something that isn't for kids in the first place (say GTA) and demanding it be censored to save the children is utterly retarded.

I was pressed to start this post after going on youtube to hear an old song i havn't heard in a while, Purple Pills by d12 http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=o7eViKPSkZU . Its a great song, but little did i know there was a censored MTV/RADIO version http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Uuq6HgKgEFQ&feature=related . I was like S*I* what's the point of putting this out? It's not even the real song! So here's some questions i'd like to ask and here you'r opinions

#1) Should they have made an MTV version or not just showed it, because it's not even the real song anymore, there's a diffrence between bleeping and ALTERING THE ENTIRE SONG
For my money, they shouldn't have, but the issue is much more complex than that.

Take the song Closer [http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=PTFwQP86BRs], by Nine Inch Nails. Forgoing any themes, only absolute morons are going to say Trent Resner isn't a talented musician. That being said, the song is clearly about sex, and not in the subtle way that some people are used to. What's more, the video itself is very graphic.

Should they have aired this on MTV? Eah...no, I don't think so, not if they have to chop it into little tiny pieces to do it. Did they? Yes, a few times, because people demanded it. They only showed it a few times, but it was still really cool.

MTV, as a network, has to do what people want it to do in order to stay in business. It is that simple.

#2) Are you affected by censorship like this,
Every now and again, but it's usually stupidly obvious. Nightmare [http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=94bGzWyHbu0], by Avenged Sevenfold, was a strange example; it wasn't just censored for language, but for time; the song itself is over 6 minutes long. If I recall correctly, the same thing applies to Bat Country, only worse; they cut out almost half the song.

#3) Do you have any other extreme acts of censorship like this
...I'm sorry, I don't understand the question. What?

#4) Overall whats your opinion on censorship?
I can't approve of narrow-minded, self-righteous charlatans arbitrarily deciding what is and is not acceptable for my children, and for me.

...on the other hand, I have to acknowledge that ICP shouldn't be on Sesame Street, regardless of what I think of them. There's a time and a place to spread your message, and, as an artist, you have to know that.

Call me on the fence about this; you'd be half right.

I think that even if the FCC did not set a standard, there would still be some kind of unofficial standard throughout the Top 40 media outlets. So I say get rid of the FCC censorship rules. Private companies like MTV and radio stations have every right to censor what they put on air, be it from societal pressure or otherwise. If an artist wishes to change his art so that MTV will play it, then that's the decision of the artist.

It's like if you want to sell some kind of food product at a grocery store. You give them a taste, show them the recipe, but then they come back and say "It's fantastic, but you can't use artificial flavors and we want it to be cheaper." You can change the recipe or you can find another market for your product.

People need to grow up and stop this whole fight the system thing, no ones out to get you, censorship exists for a good reason, their are curtails to rights and the government/organised religion is not out to get you and are not evil groups.

"Fuck you" will always be a better song than "Forget you".

I really like this song now.

OT: "Money for Nothing" by Dire Straits and "One in a Million" by Guns n' Roses are both some of my favorite songs, yet both are censored.

I prefer the uncensored version, as I feel the song flows better.

Not a big fan of censorship by any means.

That actually sounds like a good idea. A lot more people would tune in.

This happens with most songs that feature swear words, I have also noticed it happing a lot on tv, paramount comedy edits stuff like scrubs to remove sexual innuendo, C'mon scrubs a pg tv show is deemed too sexual to show unedited on daytime tv. That is kinda fucked up.

I always find it funny when teenage dirtbag comes on the radio, and they have the brings a gun to school part censored, but it is just covered by a CD scratch noise, so it sounds terrible. I always end up singing that line anyway, as I sing along with the song, in a manly way, of course.

And there was that Rihanna song that I hear on the radio, and half the song is bleeped out, because it must be something naughty.

It just seems kind of pointless in songs, as you can either tell exactly what they are saying, and so it's pointless, or it ruins the song with bleeps or scratches, so listening to it for enjoyment is pointless.

All censorship is wrong, however this isn't so much censorship as radio edits. Censorship would've them not being allowed to release the music. This is more like the companies agreeing to tone it down a bit in order to get screen and radio time.

I remember this as Purple Hills xD the song just made sense.
