I've been looking for work for a while to save up for school next fall. The place I have really wanted to work is Costco, but they have told me they are not hiring until late April.

Now, recently I got a job at Wal-Mart. I had worked for them before and I was not very happy there (not so much the work, more the poor way it was run and working there feels like I'm violating my own ethical code like a vegan desperately working at KFC).

I still want the job at Costco, but I'm curious if I should update my resume to say I'm working now or if I should only bring that up if they ask since it will have been a very short time in between.

I would go ahead and update your resume to be as accurate as possible. In fact, it's pretty admirable that you're working before you get into college, and if it were me, I would view your initiative in a positive light.

Also, you can't be expected to not work while hoping to get a better paying job. I would keep your resume accurate. If anyone should ask about the change, the proper answer is honesty. It's nothing personal against Wal-mart, you were simply provided a better opportunity and you decided to take it.

Actually my college/work life has been rather on and off the last few years.

Work for a year, go to school, run out of money and have to come home because I couldn't find work in the college city.

Repeat until last year.

I found a second source of income selling artwork that would cover rent and expenses, but the work can be inconsistent.

Keep the wal-mart job going and put it on the resume - it demeonstrates you have more experience so makes you more likely to be hired when the costco job comes around

As others have said, absolutely update your resume. From a hiring manager's perspective it looks like "Wal-Mart hired this guy so he's gotta have something going for him."

Update it. It's no lie that a person who has a job is more likely to be picked over the unemployed (as much as I hate it) as it shows on their resume they're motivated to push for that job/for employment.
