I usually don't bother, because most customization parts have the game in 3rd person, so you never see your face anyway.

City of Heroes got a little out of control for me. I think I spent two hours a day making characters and maybe an hour or so playing the game. I loves character generation. One thing I hate though is most games where you customize your guy they don't ever speak. This annoys me. I like how Saint's Row 2 got around it.
I love my cockney guy with a Disney villain goatee and slicked back hair.

don't really care about customization, if the game have the possibility I just pick the random button

Part of the reason I love City of Heroes so much.

Hell, part of the reason I like World of Warcraft. It takes a bit more effort, but I have a full server of alts, with different classes, professions, and styles...all but one below level 25.

Can't beat Saints Row 2 for that kind of thing. Insane-crossdressing-guy-with-moobs-clown anyone?

I spend more time making D&D characters then I do playing

I'd like to see a game with in depth personality customization. Blank slates are good if you want the character to basically be you, but I often wish I could create a character with a distinct personality for advanced role playing

I absolutely LOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOVE character creators, if a game has character customization that's a huge plus for me. '

My favorite characters I've made are:
My guy in Saints Row 2, he was bald and had no eyebrows (dude was in a damn explosion) and he wore a purple suit and matching fedora.

And my Fallout 3 guy, badass bounty hunter with an awesome fedora.

Hmm, I think I have a fedora fetish.

I know im not the ONLY guy who spends a long time fooling around with character creators... right? The whole idea of creating a unique persona is something that never gets old in my opinion. What are your thoughts?
Incredibly hit or miss. Sometimes create-a-character can seem futile considering that no matter what you do, your character will look like an ugly shambles (Juiced 2 and Mass Effect) or will barely affect the character you're altering (Mount And Blade and Mass Effect). However, sometimes it's done affectively and it works. I think it's rare for a game to balance not being too complicated to make a character that looks even okay let alone unique and allowing enough accessibility so you don't feel like you're altering dials with no affect.

I love character creation. It can make a game that much more interesting to be able to create your own unique-looking character. But it can depend on the quality of the character creator... some games have good ones... so there must be bad one, at least in comparison, somewhere.

Oh yeah I love character customization it's usually my favorite part of any game.

However I didn't like it in Mass Effect...you really gotta have the default face otherwise the voice just doesn't fit.

I used to spend a lot of time with the character creator to come up with a good name.
But that was then, nowadays I just press random a few times and make a name out of some latin word that has a lot to do with the character or the game.

There is no doubt that character creation could be made into a game all on its own. In fact i would not be surprised if it has. I have made so many Morrowind characters its not funny. Strangely i have only made a handful for Oblivion.

I love creating my own character. It makes me feel more connected to them and more involved in the story.

On fallout 3 and and oblivion my character always comes out looking freaky so I just hit random anyway.

Yeah, I spend a good deal of time on it. It's important for me my character looks good, since his face will represent me for a fair amount of time to come... (Runescape is one of the few MMORPGs that have simple and cheap re-customization).

I only find they're great in games that use them to their full potential... I mean, there was no point in creating a custom face for your fallout character because you never see it....

but in Saint's Row 2, I created a fat, bald-with-a-mullet bearded guy with a British accent and a facial expression that could be described as a stroke victim meets down syndrome....

watching the cut-scenes with him in them were absolutely hilarious :).
