Character Death

So I'll preface the question with the experience that drives me to ask it. Recently I was participating in a session of the RPG Orpheus, a pen and paper RPG from White Wolf's World of Darkness series about ghosts, when in an encounter one of our NPC allies was slain. Our Storyteller had done a fantastic job getting us to sympathize with all of the NPC's up to that point and so having one of those characters die off was about as disheartening as having our own player characters die.

So now to the question, have you ever found yourself emotionally touched by the death or injury of an NPC in a game or a minor character in a story? If so what was it that made you emotionally invested in that character?

In my case the character was romantically involved with my mentor and so through their relationship and through other minor reactions I felt as though I knew another actual person. Because of this it was tragic to lose them.

Also, if you haven't ever found yourself touched by an NPC or minor character this way do you think that you would like to be?

It's probably cliched but I thought Noble Two's (kat) death was really great, it was one of the only games I know of to suddenly have a character shot mid sentence. It really brought the whole tone of the game down, it was almost up until that point you could save reach. Noble Six's attempt to drag the body into the lift is heart wrenching!

Zack's death, the events leading up to it, and the speach he gives while dying, have both had an impact on me. He died a hero, and when Price of Freedom came on, with Cloud looking over him, the sadness was jacked to 11.

If you PM a mod they will usually take care of it quickly.

Not in games, but in books, TV series, books and so on, sure.

Oh, actually I purchased (with the Portal 2 pre-purchase) and played through Portal just yesterday. I probably spent 5 minutes trying to figure out how I could go around and not kill Companion Cube...

You're ought to spoiler those kind of videos. I couldn't think of a worse spoiler than that, if you haven't finished watching both seasons.

Every character death in FE is one too many, I always retry a chapter when that happens

Lost Odyssey spoilers.
Disc 2 Spoilers
Lirum's death was really sad because Kaim, who was shown as this jaded and almost emotionless man, beraks down into tears when she dies. Also the music playing at the time was really sad.

Ending Spoilers.
The part where Seth pushes Gongora through the mirror and gets pulled along with him was prety sad too. I didn't feel all that sad at first because she didn't actually die. I didn't feel sad until Jansen and Ming's wedding when Sed looks up into the window and the light shines through and Sed says something, can't remember if he cries too though.

Same here...
But the Black Fang couldn't be saved and it made it even sadder.
And it was sad reading about how a noble cause was corrupted by a man who himself started out on a quest for power to save his family.
Sigh, i wish my DS Lite still worked, i wanna play it again.

THANK YOU! No one agreed with me that her death was the best in the game. THANK YOU!

Also the death in Red Dead Redemption...it's been 9 months since that came out and I'm still scared of spoiling it!

That shit bummed me out too.

When Try Again Bragg gets killed, it honestly tugged at my heart strings. It drove me crazy, waiting for retribution from Larkin.

Agun Soric also made me feel a bit sad. I never found him compelling until he was turned into a sanctioned psyker, and was killed to spare his suffering. Things like this get to me.

Virgil's death always gets to me. The fact that he went to confront his brother's killers, knowing full well he most likely won't live is deeply moving. Fortunately, you can revive him! =D

Also,

Out of all the characters to kill, why did it have to be Lavitz?! :'-(

Alice from No More Heroes 2.
She was just a boss that you had to kill, but the way she acted was very intriguing, and the possibility of a backstory was too large, but ignored.
