John from Red Dead. Really touching, and one of the most symbolic deaths in gaming.
As he died, so did the spirit of the West.

Also, Emily from Deadly Premonition. That was such a bittersweet ending.
Yes, the Raincoat Killer was purged from the world, and York finally got to be with Emily, but in the end we lost two characters we'd come to love so much...

Yeah, I remember playing that part...
I tried shooting everything else but her just to have the game tell me I couldn't do it any other way :(

Technically not death but in Aquaria..
Massive spoiler alert here.

Naija's mom more or less "kill" Naija by mind-raping her in the hidden ending. No resistance. What the hell?! After everything she went through?!

When Try Again Bragg gets killed, it honestly tugged at my heart strings. It drove me crazy, waiting for retribution from Larkin.

Agun Soric also made me feel a bit sad. I never found him compelling until he was turned into a sanctioned psyker, and was killed to spare his suffering. Things like this get to me.
Muril and Corbec also apply. Caffran too. Damn you Dan Abnett for picking off the most beloved characters!

When I play Fallout 3 I can never EVER let Dogmeat die. If Dogmeat dies I have to reload the previous save and start again, even if it means losing 3 hours of work.

That's like, the most famous character death in gaming.

Personally, The Shadow of the Colossus ones had a big impact on me. Two of them, everyone who's played the game knows what I'm talking about. But I was also really moved by the death of the fourteenth colossus. The way it spends its last moments singlemindedly determined to destroy you, (and you arguably deserve it) even at the cost of its home, made me feel really sad to have to kill it.

Not sure if anyone remembers, but in the early series of Final Fantasy VII (Which was Final Fantasy 7), Aerith was a very kind, gentle-hearted girl you can play alongside with during your adventure. I got attached to her and didn't really think anything could bad happen to her but-

<spoiler=Aerith's Death>While she seemed to be on top of an ancient platform with her hands cuffed like she was praying, Sephiroth came down and stabbed her in the chest, which she died slowly of course making it more dramatic

When I saw that, I just felt so sad inside like I wanted to do whatever I could to pervent that event. Though, it was very significant cause she died for the sake of Cloud to help him save the World and that's a huge deal to me.

Rest in Peace, Aerith..
im not ashamed to say i cried when she died

I just pointed out my worse ones from the series.

I don't think Abnett will stop until its just Larkin and Gaunt fighting the hordes of Chaos back to back.

It's probably cliched but I thought Noble Two's (kat) death was really great, it was one of the only games I know of to suddenly have a character shot mid sentence. It really brought the whole tone of the game down, it was almost up until that point you could save reach. Noble Six's attempt to drag the body into the lift is heart wrenching!
Thank you, I thought that was an amazingly done death. Jorge's and Noble One's were so heroic, or trying to be, Kat's death felt real, it had a weight to it. I actually thought Noble Six and Emile's deaths were well done also. They didn't have that self sacrificing, altruism to them, they felt like they were wild animals biting and clawing and struggling for their last bit of life. For those brief moments it felt like these masked super-soldiers were afraid to die, and that's something.

Also, Shadow of the Colossus.

"People seem to like them. I'll keep writing until they don't anymore or, as I've said, until I've killed everybody-whichever is soonest."

Damn you Abnett....

Not in games, but in books, TV series, books and so on, sure.

Oh, actually I purchased (with the Portal 2 pre-purchase) and played through Portal just yesterday. I probably spent 5 minutes trying to figure out how I could go around and not kill Companion Cube...
I keep seeing your posts and they are so close to my thoughts...I just HAVE To quote you. So yes, what s/he said. And I spent the time for the companion cube too. I even said a eulogy for him. That was a sad death, kind've.

Ha. Well, it's always nice to bump into a kindred spirit.

GODDDAAMMMNNNN THIISS FILLED ME WITH MANLY MANLY TEEAARRSS.

Well not so much tears as shocked, stunned, utter silence.

Even after having it SPOILED on a thread in this very forum... I mean, I knew was it coming and yet... I still didn't expect it... it made it worse even. Wow. Great, great game.

Death of a character in game? The death of Ashley hit me pretty hard in ME1, and I was more than a little pissed off when Sgt. Johnson died, but that's pretty much it.

In literature though, I could name two books that reduced me to a blubbering mess of tears without even thinking: Wilbur Smith's River God, and The Clan of the Cave Bear. Rydag's death in The Mammoth Hunters was also pretty sad, but not on the same level.

My friends are sick to death with me at the moment because I've just done my first run-through of Mass Effect. XD At the Wrex option I didn't know that one of them killed him and I chose the 'Ashely shoots Wrex' option by accident. I was devastated >: I genuinely felt sorry for the krogan and I could see things from Wrex's perspective, so I reloaded the entire mission and chose to save him. I also felt extremely bad for Saren when he shot himself, because he was unaware of just how much he was duped (and I genuinely believe he thought he was doing his best for the universe).

I think Bioware are great at making you feel for their NPCs. Because when I found Archangel in Mass Effect 2 and those bastards were trying to kill him, I literally screamed ***** TOUCH MY TEAM MATE AND DIE and went on a killing spree. :')
