Starscream in Transformers: Armada
Marcus from Babylon 5
Epic sacrifices are epic TT.TT

Can't really think of any from video games though...

Treize Khushrenada getting killed was sad in Gundam Wing, along with pretty much any death in Endless Waltz
Trieze Khushrenada, maybe the coolest politician and despot ever, and they killed him! Well, people die in war, but still...
His discussion about war with Wufei before his death adds to it gracefully, how he asks how many of his soldiers have lost their lives and really seems to show compassion for them, everything about that scene was great.

Rurik from Guild Wars was quite a good death as he was an awesome guy who sacrificied his life so his people could survive, a sacrifice which paid off.
Strange that, me and my friends all cheered.

I could list a fair few that did bother me though but for now I'll just say one which effected me as much as it did just because of how unexpected it was, in Saints Row 2...

When Carlos dies, first off its a really horrible death but in a game as immature and mindless as this combined with the scene when THE BOSS has to kill him I was just like WOAH, did not see that coming.

Maybe it was just me, but the same seemed to handle it oddly well.

If we're only going for video games then I'd say The Boss from MGS3 and I'm not one who usually cries but that was too sad. Then after finding out the whole story from Eva I cried harder. Without spoiling the whole thing really got to me.

I have to say that when I was playing MW2 and General Shepard betrayed you and Ghost and I saw Ghost die that was one of the saddest moments in my gaming history.

Indeed.

Well, watching this trailer is quite emotionally gripping
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=lZqrG1bdGtg&feature=youtu.be&hd=1

I'm actually quite interested in this tension between emotional involvement and the fact that it's over pixels (or words/images in the case of other media). Of course, it's the telling which moves us. It'd be idiotic to, for example, emotionally care about the faceless NPCs you mow down at a Moscow Airport in MW2, but performing the action bothers some. Black comedy is all about making the reader/player laugh at himself for responding automatically with emotion to mere pixels and words. The wonderful Companion Cube is a perfect example of this.
But without the palimpsest of a black comic structure, to read/play/watch things like in this trailer means to be moved.

However, the more skilled a reader you are, the more often things like, oh, characters dying in Halo Reach, are nothing but comic.
