Yeah, I tend to run characters based more on how well I like them rather than how well they perform. Of course, performing well can help me like them more, but it's by no means either necessary or sufficient. I'll handicap myself to ridiculous extremes in order to run characters that I prefer rather than ones that are actually good.

I also tend to put certain characters together in a party more for emotional reasons than synergistic gameplay ones. In FFVI, for example, whenever you have to divide your characters up into multiple parties, Celes and Locke usually go in the same party. Same thing for Sabin and Edgar. There are better choices strategically, but I don't rate those considerations as highly.
