In WoW my mains name is Cerresian. all my other toons have random names.
In games where the character has a name, but you can change it if you want, i just leave it as it is.

Marteca for female characters or Durzo for male characters. The former is something I came up with a while ago and have just stuck with, the latter is one of my favourite fictional characters. Usually it doesn't matter too much to me so I just stick with those two as my defaults.

Either 'Aby' or 'Z'

Yea... Don't I just got the best imagination?
well, that depends.
are those the names of your mothers favorite wizard who birthed her from the stone at the top of valhalla?
because if so, then you have a GREAT imagination

OT:
I name them what I think they look like,(odd note: in ff7 on my first playthrough I named cloud "Zack")

either that or "Zen" or "Legend"
and sometimes "Ryan"
and my old Runescape characters name is "funydoody"

If a name is given, I go with it. (Cloud, Squall, etc)
I may put my name (Frankie)
Name from history (Scipio)
Name from fiction (Skirata)

And my own made up name I've been using since my 1st D&D character in 5th grade:

Solcia

Hmmm...I like 'S' names...

My common theme in my names is the number 64. So usually either D64NZ in FPS games or Ambiguous64 in RTS games (for no appparent reason).
Why? Cause then I can have most any name but with the unique (to me) end in any game no matter how many months or years I put off buying it and signing in online.

They usually have a 3 number combination such as 367 or 777 for a name when making multiple characters. If it's just a small flash RPG or something, I put K367 as the name. In all other situations, I use Kommando.

my guy in Fallout 3 is called Citizen Payne

he wheres a suit, a top hat and only uses the lead pipe, the fatman (a mini nuke caturpult) and the double barreled shotgun

whenever my brother is playing DandD (i play ocasionaly with him but it never intrest me) i throw a tanturm when he wont let me have the name, which usually means our questing team consists of

Gladri-Elf archer

Shodlow-Human knight

Krasveer-Elf magician guy

Citazen payne-badass

Most characters I create are female. I have four names I usually chose from: Kallyn, Nalina, Tesnia or Ledina. As for male characters I usually just improvise.

I played wow so I've had alot of them so:

-Bealzibob (obviously)
-Zanmoto
-Smeegle (Not my most original and not spelt "correctly")
-Startlefish
-Mojave Brave
-Jackofall
-Dashadow
EDIT:-Constantine (But it's a tough one to get without using alt letters)

Thats all the ones I find decent, usually start with Bealz and work through them till I find one thats not taken.

I tend to name my characters Voltaire, after my favourite singer, or Goren, after Vincent D'Onofrio's character on Law & Order: Criminal intent. Sometimes I will amalgamate the two, like in Persona, I call my character "Voltaire Goren".
