Andrew Ryan was one for me. At first he was simply the bad guy trying to kill me, but as I explored Rapture I started to understand his perspective (even though I have never approved of his methods). While he is still very much a villain in the game, I like him as a villain.
I always had an hard time consider Ryan a Villain, to me he is more a man whho tried to live his dream and gor it crushed... Atlas/Fontaine was more the Villain
I meant more from the characters perspective. Up until the revelation, he is the bad guy trying to kill you, I guess 'antagonist' would be a more accurate way of describing him, as he isn't exactly "evil".

Tyrion Lannister.
Seemed like an ass in the first episode, but quickly showed his true colors.
I'm going to say him too. In the beginning, I never liked how he would always talk down to people, and even when he wasn't, he always had that smug tone that made you know that he thought so great.

I think I started to like him around the time he managed to escape the prison. He deserved a little shit to be thrown at him, and it also made him take people a little more serious, which I liked.

I was on a Film Noir spree, and one movie featured this character; Dan Muldoon. He was really sarcastic and his voice sounded like a munchkin from the Wizard of Oz. At first, as a joke, I criticized his every action, placing phrases like "I hate you Muldoon" or "You suck, Muldoon" at 10 second intervals. I did genuinely dislike him, but I exaggerated it as a joke. However, towards the second half of the film, I began to have a strong appreciation for Muldoon, and by the end phrases like "I hate you, Muldoon" were replaced by "God bless you, you beautiful man".

Murphy from Silent Hill: Downpour traveled the same arc. At first, I didn't like him, but as the game went on and more of his history was revealed, I warmed up to him, and now I consider him to be one of the better protagonists in the series. He's not on the James Sunderland level, but thankfully he's no... *shudders* Henry Townshend.

Oh, and I felt the same about Andrew Ryan. It wasn't until later in the game that I recognized him as one of the most masterfully crafted "antagonists" in game history.

Junpei Iori from Persona 3.

He seemed like a nice dude at first. We were made friends on the first few days of school.
You got him as a social link? Because I can't figure out how. Same with Yukari.

Jamie Lannister. Once he gets his own POV chapters, he becomes much more likable and more sympathetic.
Really? I got that with Tywin Lanister, but Jamie? Every POV about him had him fleshing out his evil side. Deceiving and killing that squire for instance all for his own gain.

Junpei doesn't have a social link, but Yukari does about half way through the game.

Murray from Sly Cooper, I thought he was SO annoying in the first Sly Cooper game, I hated ALL of his missions. But then in the second game, when he somehow turned into a bad ass, I came to like him a lot.

Ah Zeke... That lovable bastard. What was once nothing but a complete and utterly useless sack of shit, he soon became the heart of the story and the best partner any superhero could want to sit back and down a couple cold ones with.

Triss Merrigold, first she started out as a whiny ***** in a skimpy outfit. But then she turned into a whiny ***** with a different skimpy outfit. Wait, that's not how it's supposed to work.

Lugo from Spec Ops: The Line. Going from a jackass sniper who made stupid remarks at every chance he got, and then as you do more and more morally questionable you see that he's really trying to keep you from going over the brink. And then it happens.

When I first met thane I thought he was gonna be really boring because of his super-polite personality. After I had finished his loyalty mission and talked to him a few times after, he was my favorite character of the series.

The maker from dragons age. His followers are like gamestop employees. I still hate him, he gives up too easily and is a whiny *****. But i can applaud his followers tenacious activitys..

If you really make me choose, Ganta from Deadman Wonderland. He is a interesting character that is at first a push over, then becomes badass.

rise and shine captcha, rise and shine indeed

Akane Tendo from my favorite anime/manga of all time, Ranma1/2. Even though she's the main female lead, and the main main character Ranma Saotome's love interest. I...fucking hated her. Actually I still don't even like her. But I've come to respect her as a character with flaws and the like.

My only real problem with the character is that she's never called out on her behavior. Constantly smacking the main character with the force to kill an ordinary person, constantly taking his rivals' sides when it doesn't directly involve her in some way. It also plays into the trope 'Abuse is Okay When It's Female on Male'.

On the flip side, and in the same anime. I used to have a deep respect for one Ryoga Hibiki. The main rival of the series lead Ranma Saotome. And then that was turned right around when it pointed out to me exactly what Ryoga is actually like.

Jack from Mass Effect 2 and 3. I thought she was a ***** (and not particularly bright) when I met her in ME2, and still had the same opinion of her at the end. Her loyalty mission made me understand why she became the ***** she was, but she was still a ***** nonetheless. It wasn't until Mass Effect 3 that I actually started to like her. Perhaps that's the whole point about her cameo in Mass Effect 3, but it sure struck home.

Oh, and Mordin from the same games. Thought he was an annoying piece of motormouth. And steadily, gradually, he became a lovable motormouth. I got actually emotional when he screamed "I made a mistake!" in my Renegade playthrough.

Oh I just remembered a character I could mention.

Asuka from NGE and the Rebuild movies. For quite a long time I really disliked her but after a while she grew on me and as I finally understood why she was the way she was, I really liked her character.

A lot of the FFXIII characters could be annoying at times aswell, but they grew on me soon enough.

Severus Snape from the Harry Potter series. At first, I didn't like him all that much, especially after a certain... point in the later books. But when I read the last book and found out about his backstory, I felt really bad that felt that way about him...

I actually totally forgot about that one. I agree, after understanding his back story, I'd say he is easily one of my favourite characters from the series.

It's a shame they did it so poorly in the films to be honest.

Suzaku Kururugi from Code Geass. Like a lot of people when he showed up R2 I hated his guts. Then I thought about it and realized where he was coming from, and why he treated Lelouch the way he did (because he doesn't know what the audience knows obviously). Also helped that he got a completely kick ass upgrade for his giant robot by the end of the series.

Jamie and Theon in the A song of Ice and Fire books. Jamie just seems like a twat till you get to his actual chapters where he's quite an awesome character and as for Theon I liked him at first and then he did that one thing but I think he's suffered enough now...Hell i'd forgive most dickheads after what happens to him.

Quite a few characters from Lost. I wouldn't like certain characters until their back-story was revealed and I could see why they were the way they were.

Garrus vakarian.

Hear me out, since he turned out to be favorite character at the end of the series.

My initial impression was that he was going to be some goody two-shoes who spent most of the time aboard the normandy looking up to shepard and carrying his unused rifles.

This is actually true. I couldn't give a vorchas-ass about what Garrus thought about anything in the first game.

Then along came Mass effect 2. And (for all the complaints i have about this game, mostly it being too action oriented and dumbed down/ streamlined) lo and behold, character development had gripped Garrus and would not, could and did not let go. He'd grown, i'd apparently affected him (this was a tad iffy to me, as i doubt telling him about my grand adventures from the surface withWrex and liara did anything to inspire him) but he'd grown a vigilante rep, become more snarky and, as far as i was concerned. He'd become an enjoyable and multi faceted character.

Him and Zidane from FFIX. I was pretty fed up with snarky-casanova-pretty boys with freudian excuses. But it turned out Zidane was a pretty fun guy to hang with, even if he did knock off gokus style.
