Characters the Devs Liked a Little Too Much

Ew. No, not like that. That's DeviantArt.

I'm talking about characters who don't get the same deal as everyone else. These are characters that, for no apparent reason, the developers decided had to be better than everyone else.

The most obvious example for me (and the impetus for the topic) is Morrigan in Dragon Age: Origins.

Holy hell, do the devs like Morrigan. Lets take a look:

1. She takes verbal jabs at the player whenever they do something good, but we're never able to respond. (Something the modding community thankfully [a href="http://social.bioware.com/project/1281/"]fixed[/a])
2. When in dialogue/argument with other party members she always comes out ahead, either convincing them to her side or getting the last laugh.
3. When the Guardian of the Temple questions the party, she's the only one who refuses to be questioned.
4. In the fade, she's one of only two companions who realizes it's a trick and the only one who fights against it.

One or two of those things would have been fine, but combined they make a character that is obviously too well liked by the devs. She's not a "perfect" character, but we're never allowed to see her taken down a peg like we are the others. Every other character has a moment when they either doubt themselves or are put in their place. Not Morrigan.

So, Escapists, what other characters can you think of that seem to have been liked by the devs a little too much?

Wolverine. Not just in games, but in every damn thing. It's hard to think of any X-men thing without him.

What about X-Men First Cla- Wait, shit. You win this one...
OT: Nothing off the top of my head. Johnny Gatt from the Saints Row games is pretty ridiculously smooth and awesome, but that's part of his awesome.

Liara T'soni in Mass Effect. She gets far too much preferrential treatment, getting her own comic, her own DLC, being the only one who can't die, getting a whole paragraph dedicated to how amazing she is in the PS3 opening comic thing... she just gets so much handed to her.

Perhaps it wouldn't be so bad if her fans weren't subsequently so pleased with themselves because of it. But whatever the case, she's become a character I already had disdain for but now I loathe.

I mean no offence to any people who like Liara, but that's just my opinion.

Barney in Half-Life 2. The other characters I mostly see the need for, even Alyx.

Also, the little girls towards the end of Bioshock. It seems like there's thousands of those darn splicers, and Tenenbaum gets mad if I accidentally let 5 or 8 of the kids die. Sheesh!

My first thought when reading the title was Morrigan as well. They really over advertised her before the game came out, up to the point where she could be mistaken for the lead character or the only companion worth anything in the story.

i disagree with the morrigan thingy, if shes to smart and stubborn so she always wins her arguement, thats her charecter. And telling the gaurdian to shut up is also part of her charecter.

Pretty much the same as this but substitute the word Deadpool for Wolverine, I really do hate that guy.

Why are you hating on deadpool he isn't everywhere or anything.
Guy has only one small mention in a terrible wolverine film.
I would say cloud from FF7

Like I said, one or two of those things would have been fine. It's the fact that she's ALL of them. She is simply never allowed to be seen taken down a peg. If she'd won every argument, refused to be questioned, but was tricked by the fade, I'd have no problems with the character.

The Fade sequence and the Guardian's questions are key points in the characters' development. Its shows their weaknesses and their doubts. How they get out of them shows their strength. Morrigan is not allowed to show weakness, no matter what.

Yes, I realize that it fits her character, but that's the problem. The devs made her character smarter, tougher and meaner than any of the other characters. In the end it makes her a shallow character. Conversations with her lead to hints about her insecurities but we're never allowed to explore these like we are with the other characters, and she never develops. She ends up being an interesting character, not for how she's portrayed, but because of lost potential.

Had the developers actually given her an arc, she might have been my favorite character.

There is one good answer for this thread.

Shadow the Hedgehog.

Sega was planning to kill him off at the end of Sonic Adventure 2, but since the fans loved him so much, they brought him back with amnesia. And look what came out of that, wangst, badassness, MARIA!, more wangst, even MORE wangst, and wangst. Did I mention the Wangst?

Ghost from MW2, true they end up setting fire to the guy, but in some act of repentance they gave him a skull balaclava, and in the eyes of the 12 year old community, skulls = awesome and cool and sexy and so much cooler than icky girls.
He then got a comic series...
He then got put into Halo Reach...Or maybe that was just fandering. [Fan / Pandering, I'm so witty]

Bumblebee. He's cool and all, but nothing is more blatantly, irresponsibly badass than G1 Megatron, or as sneaky and understandable as G1 Starscream.

Yeah, G1 was the best. I'm glad an action director never made a live-action movie on it, though. That'd be hella stupid. *twitch*

She was unattached. After ME everyone else had something forcing them to take a certain action, she didn't so they could have her do what was needer plotwise to keep things ticking over. She was also the reason they could find Saren... that was kind of important.

Master Chief. I liked him in the first one but fucking hell three hits and he's out for the count.

First one comes to mind is Agustus Cole from Gears of War.

he is bigger, stronger, has more personality (even if said personality is of an over the top Mohammad Ali) then any of the other gears. he repeatedly does awesome things in the face of extreme danger, and does it with the enthusiasim of a child (WHOOOOO! BRING IT ON SUKA! THATS MY KIND OF SHIT!) They even gave him a Rap.

second one and a little more old school was Zero. Keep in mind the Zero Model was SUPPOUSED to be Mega Man X in the First Place, and Inafune must have been pissy when his bosses said no to the design. after all Zero is the Kkystone to the Mega Man X Plot.

It's obvious Game Freak likes certain Pokemon over others based on some of them being or becoming insanely good with just a few new toys.

Blaziken: Got Speed Boost for an alternate ability, meaning his speed increases every turn he stays in battle.

Scizor: Got Bullet Punch in Platinum, an attack that hits first most of the time AND is powered up not only from being a Steel attack but also from his ability to power up weak attacks.

Garchomp: ...it was just always well-designed artistically and statistically.

At the same time, they also seem to hate some of their monsters, too. Probably the biggest victim of this is Flareon, who despite having great Attack power lacks ANY decent attacks to use it with. The best physical Fire move it has is... Fire Fang (65 power), when there are other physical Fire moves that are stronger, most notably Flare Blitz (120 power).

I don't know, I seem to recall Allister getting the better of her a couple times. One time in particular with a backhanded comment on how she resembled her mother.

Frank West. He is pretty much put in a lot of video games by Capcom (Tatsunoko VS Capcom, Lost Planet 1 and 2, possibly UMVC3, Dead Rising 2 off the Record), though it may just be for the fans though.
