I'm gonna have to say Elene Cromwyll from the Night Angel trilogy. She was such a preachy *****, and a Mary Sue to boot. She could do no wrong in Kylar's mind, and she had no real foil other than...well, being a preachy *****. I much preferred Viridiana as the female lead. At least she was a character with some DEVELOPMENT!

I agree sooo much.

I lost count of all the times I was disappointed there was no "Oh, your cool" speech option.

OT: Susan Rodriguez from The Dresden Files. There was absolutely no chemistry,

And just when I thought "Oh, maybe she is finally out of the main story line for good?", they bring back the bullshit left hook.

She was a terrible character. She had no defining moments, she was there just to be the "Failed love interest". The parts where she pulled some brave move to save the day felt empty and out of character.

Let her die off already. Get her out of the story. Maybe pull the bullshit "She died and the kid and her was all in your head" (haven't read the last book, so I have my hopes up).

Anyone hate Riku? Guy was a self rightous prick early on in Kingdom Hearts, oh he did get WAYY better in Chain of Memories, to the point where I vastly prefer his story over Sora's. But In the first game, he was an arrogant punk who pissed me off at every turn, his crowning momement of assholeness was when he STEALS the Keyblade and forces you to fight Heartless with a wooden sword. Yeah, you can use magic, but the vast majority of KH players never use it.
But it wasnt Riku that was the asshole, it was Ansems Apprentice Zehanort. Who possesed him from the beggining, KH2 reveals this, and Riku becomes way cooler =P

OT: I hate Vanille, everyone has an american accent, then this jailbait whore sounds Australian (not that I dont like Aussie's but she is out of place)

You mean Xehanort. Oh yeah, the guy who was "Ansem." Still, if we're gonna talk like this, than Riku was a royal moron for letting him into his heart. And might I add, Riku acted like a royal jerkoff previously. And it was MALEFICENT who corrupts him. Guy was already halfway there to evil, Xehanort just pops up after he gets his ass handed to him by Sora, previously, he had gained the powers of Darkness due to Maleficent unlocking that darkess, also he was irradated by traveling through Corridor's of Darkness, thus opening his heart to it vastly.

I assume that Kira Yamato, the lead character of Gundam SEED, and the later half of Gundam SEED Destiny wasn't supposed to be such a hatable character, but he is.

I mean, come on, who could like such a God Mode Sue as a Gundam protagonist? Not to mention his utterly braindead take on stopping conflicts.

Durr, imma' go and shot down a buncha guys on both sides without killing them, thus leaving them completely defenseless against hostile Mobile Suits as they can do nothing but watch as they're totally butt-raped by the ones I didn't shotted down durr.

I screamed out in joy when I saw Shinn finally shot his ass down in Destiny, I actually screamed, Shinn had just become my new favourate Gundam character ever for killing my most hated Gundam character ever.

Too bad Kira's death didn't last, eh? Oh well, it was sweet while it lasted.

Carth from KOTOR. I've heard over and over that Bastila's just a ***** and Carth is awesome. No.

Bastila has family issues related to her being lied to, then cut off from them because the Jedi Order says so. Plus she knows you're a sith lord that could possibly go crazy at any moment (and one time for giggles I did).

Carth doesn't trust you. He saves you countless times, you play as altruistic as possible, baffing him at every turn with your generosity and love, but apparently, he just has trust issues. He gets more easy going once you open up the sidequest about his surprisingly-not-dead kid who is now a sith student, and definitely after you destroy Saul "Who Does This Remind You Of?" Karath.

But during Tutorial World, he's just so...stubborn!

Definitely this now that I've been reminded.

I tried to make it through that anime but I just couldn't, the characters were all so boring and shallow.

Kamina from Gurren Lagann tbh

I mean, the anime is superb and they still manage to have me feelings nostalgic about him by the end, but really after the first episode he just seem so cocky, dimwitted and bland. I guess the idea is that he was suppose to be perfect in almost everyway so that he can leave behind the legacy that it kind of vital to the development of Simon. I suppose I just didn't respect him enough to believe that all these people would instantly worthship him

I few others but thats the biggest one recently.

She stays a stuck up ***** pretty much the entire series.
I'm guessing you stopped before Knife of Dreams, then.
Oddly enough, yes, though not intentionally. I bought Crossroads of Twilight when it first came out in 2003, but by the time Knife of Dreams came out in 2005 it completely flew under my radar and I've never gotten around to the last two books. If her demeanor improves though, it's more reason for me to revisit the series. Though being hateable for 10 out of 12 books is not a good track record, and qualifies (in my mind at least) "pretty much the entire series".
Really, she's not even a ***** from book 8-10. She's a flightly, easily distracted chew toy. Disappointing, perhaps, but a different sort of annoying. She's completely shaped up by Towers of Midnight, though.

So is Faile, for that matter. Faile.

I honestly never found any of the non-villainous female characters to be intolerably annoying, but before the whole Shaido incident and its resolution, I wasn't all that fond of her. She was a poster child among poster children for the concept of ethnocentrism, but she's actually mature now.

It sucks only one (13th) book remains.
14th. Towers of Midnight is the 13th.

But yeah, A Memory of Light comes out March 2012. I can't wait.

On topic: Elayne (also from Wheel of Time) is worthless, not sure if anyone is supposed to like her, but God knows I don't.
Thus far, she's been my only disappointment. Moiraine got into my good graces in Fires of Heaven, Egwene and Aviendha have completed their character development, I always liked Birgitte, Verin is fucking awesome, Min's never been annoying (and she's less so now that she has purposes beyond the viewings), Faile has done almost a complete 180 by Towers of Midnight (complete with laughing at how she used to be in The Dragon Reborn), Cadsuane not only got shocked out of complacency but called out for being a ***** (by <color=aliceblue>Tam of all people, which was absolutely glorious), and there are a number of signs of hope for the main female channeling groups. I mean...Teslyn and Joline! Seriously, wasn't expecting that in the last book.

Then there's Elayne. She's probably not as annoying as she's been at points in the past (A Crown of Swords was probably her low point), it's starting to get crammed into her skull that she doesn't necessarily have plot armor, and she's shown a surprising amount of self-reflection in her treatment of Mat, but...could still be better.

...also, I'm not really all that fond of Tuon. She's like Dragon Reborn-era Faile, but genuinely dangerous. >_>
Min and Aviendha are probably my favourite characters in the whole series, aside from Mat.

Honestly Rand started to grate on me once he became all "I must be hard and tough and a sociopath". Glad he got somewhat snapped out of that.

Jules in The Saboteur. He wasn't in the game for very long, luckily, but he was the motivation for why Sean Devlin fought the nazis. Makes it hard to feel for Sean, however the game was awesome anyways.

The priest brother in Call of Juarez: Bound in blood wasn't much to my fancy either. Not because I'm an atheist, but his whole goal of converting the brothers became too much. His constant nagging drove me crazy as well!

The elves from Eragon - they're pretty much author exposition philosophy devices, and don't fit with the world building up to that point.

Also, cercei from song of ice and fire. I know you're trying to change our view of the villains, George, but... you'll never make that piece of work sympathetic. Never.

if anyone here has ever read (or tried to read) the pile of crap that is Ed Greenwood's Spellfire/Shandril Saga, they'll know what it's like to hope for the main character to die. ok, we get it, she's a pacifist (so am i), but for god's sake! you're being hunted by several organizations of sociopaths who have already massacred hundreds or thousands of people in their attempt to capture you, and they show no indication of ever giving up. at some point you have to accept that those people have to die. get over yourself and either kill the bastards, or do the world a favor and kill yourself. /rant
i forced my self to read the entire thing and was very happy when she died at the end

Read this. Guy who wrote it could not agree with you more.http://www.fanfiction.net/s/4523596/1/Kingdom_Hearts_The_Short_and_Honest_Version

OP: Fucking Jaxom. Something about him just ground on my nerves. I actually had trouble finishing The White Dragon because of him.

Nynaeve from Robert Jordan's Wheel of Time series. The entire time she comes of as a self righteous ***** where the only reason she hasn't been slapped yet is because she a woman. Not to be sexist, but any person as abrasive as this character would have gotten the shit kicked out of them eventually, even if it was by another woman. And this series is supposed to take place in pseudo-medieval times. Why nobody even stands up to her abusive demeanor I don't really understand. Sure, she gets it a little bit in her training, but all this does is let her access the ability to ALTER REALITY (eg: magic). She stays a stuck up ***** pretty much the entire series.

Actually, the Wheel of Time had kind of a strong feminist undercurrent that got really preachy after a while. I disliked most of the female characters in the series as a result. The men were treated largely like either plague dogs or idiot man-children. The women were mostly pretentious and stuck-up, assured of their superiority in a way that makes my teeth grind. Few were genuinely likable.
I agree wholeheartedly The wheel of time series was
great to me but there aren't really any cool female characters...besdies Aviendha

God that was just awful. Seriously, the Chuck Norris stuff needs to end.

Anyway, Nathan Drake obviously and Katniss from Hunger Games.
