Inspired by the "Characters you've loved in the first 10 minutes" thread

I was originally going to do a "characters you hated in the first 10 minutes" thread instead, but this might be more interesting.

What are some characters that you hated when you first met them but turned out to like them later? Or maybe, you liked them and then hated them later?

For me:
Alistair from Dragon Age: Origins
At first, I did not like him at all. He was annoying and everything about him bugged me. But that changed and he ended up being my favorite character in the game.

Leon from Resident Evil
RE4 was my first Resident Evil and I absolutely adored Leon, until I became interested in the rest of the series and realized that RE4 really DID make Leon one of the most overhyped characters in the series. So...he's now dropped to one of my least favorite RE characters.

The Boss from Metal Gear Solid 3
I absolutely hated her from the beginning and I hated everything about her, but by the end of the game, I actually developed a respect for her.

Beat from The World Ends With You
I thought he was annoying as heck until the week where he's Neku's partner and his story and personality is actually more developed. He definitely wasn't my favorite character (Joshua gets that spot) but I liked him a lot more by the end.

Ok, your turn.

Easy.

Raiden - thought he was interesting before he took off the diving mask in MGS2. He took off the mask quickly mind.

Also Cloud Strife from FF7. The longer that story went on, the less sympathy I had for any of the characters. At one stage I wanted to play as Rufus Shinra more than anyone else.

I definitely agree with you on Cloud and FFVII. An entire cast I can't stand.

Canderous from KotOR.
At first, I didn't like him because I thought we was a useless gun user that spurted out badass lines occasionally.
Then I learned how incredibly awesome it is.

Kratos from God of War, then I realized that he's suppose to be a bad guy and all of a sudden it all made sense.

On the opposite end, John Shepard, liked him until I realized just how bland and superficially perfect he is, now I find the character a shame even being part of Mass Effect universe all together, and that isn't a good sign considering he's the main protagonist...0o

Kaiden Alenko from Mass Effect 1. He had my back during Eden Prime and I figured he'd be my right hand through most of the game. Then he just got boring and useless, so I let him die on Virmire. Garrus is now my 2nd in command :).

Opposite, I'd say Albedo from Xenosaga. Obviously, the 2nd game was intended to make the player feel sympathy for him and it worked on me. In contrast, in the first game I actually got pissed that the 'big, scary villain' was a knock-off of Birdman.

I despised Vannille for about 5 hours before I liked started to like her.

On the flip side, I loved Hope at first, but now he's just whinning too much. We get it, you're pissed off that your mum's dead. Get the fuck over it!!!!

Nurse Angie from Trauma Center. She basically started out as someone who appeared smug and arrogant, but she showed a lot more damage to herself as the story went on and turned into a likable character.

Am I really the only one who loved Raiden from start to finish?

I'd have to go with Raiden from MGS2. It took me a long time to warm up to him, but I do appreciate him as a very interesting and respectable character in MGS now. For the longest time I hated him likely due to the "Why the hell am I not playing Snake?" factor. I still enjoyed the game and played it through many times over and over again. Looking into Raiden more and more I realized that while he did have the problem of complaining a lot and having his personal life thrown around almost pointlessly during the mission and I started to understand that the fact that Raiden being a much more emotional character was the point of all these things seeming to disjointedly come down right on his head. Snake isn't by any means emotionless but he is much colder than Raiden and it wouldn't have worked quite the same.

Initially hated EDI from Mass Effect 2. At least, until until her and Joker started sparring at every turn.

Raiden quickly annoyed me. Initially it was probably because it was as if the circumstances to his introduction were designed to be as intensely frustrating as possible.

MGS games had introduced all sorts of interesting heroes and villains, the immediate game had a plot that was complicated enough to be unpredictable (if perhaps a bit too heavily padded out) but simple enough to follow. And yet then this playable character gets dumped in my hands reporting in the glaringly obvious over the codec and having absolutely no backstory except for soap-opera-Amnesia. All the while Snake had just been completely dropped out of the story.

No character could be introduced like that and become likeable to me; after that when something was done slightly different it felt annoying. Codec calls became intensely frustrating when nothing I gave a damn about was even tangentally mentioned.

When he gets reintroduced later in the series I was disappointed he hadn't died after being hit by a bus crossing the road.

Tali from Mass Effect. I suppose I didn't really like her that much, but I never hated her. But after completing her loyalty mission in Mass Effect 2, I grew to dislike her a lot. Though unlike a character like Reaver from Fable 2 it's not because she is poorly designed. I still think she is a good character, it's just that now she is a character that I hate.

On the other hand, I used to really hate Ashley. I think like a lot of people I just dismissed her as a racist ***** after having one short conversation with her. Then when I actually paid attention to her on a later playthrough I found that she had other qualities that I did like, and that her racism wasn't as nearly as bad as I thought and had some justification behind it.

Strangely enough I didn't mind Ashley at first, racism aside, she just came across as a hardline soldier who didn't have any other choice but to see aliens as the enemy. I really started to hate her when I had lots of conversations with her, and realised what she was:

Racist - Check (I don't care how she spins it, she's extremely xenophobic when she has much more reason to hate her own species)
God-fearing - Check
Gun-nut - Check

SHE'S A FUCKING REPUBLICAN! IN SPACE!!!
