Either robot in Portal 2. Atlas and P-Body are my favourite characters who don't say anything. Yes, more so than the Freeman.

Doomguy is the first character that comes to mind. Can carry at least 500 pounds of equipment and god knows how much ammo on his back and can still run the speed of a cheetah on steroids. Kicks so much ass he has to be careful or he'll kick his own ass. Can kill a 20 foot tall demon with just a chainsaw and a bad attitude. And he never talks so I can apply my own personality to him. As far as silent protagonists go, I like the Doomguy light years ahead of The Freeman.

So from your badass Swagneto combos to your loot whoring Zero in Borderlands 2 do you have any specific characters you love to play for whatever reason.

Ammy from Okami comes to mind personally. She's the Goddess of the Sun for god's sake! Awesome!

She runs like super fast and makes flowers grow behind her because she's the Goddess of the Sun and she gives no shits about any o' dem demons because she's the Goddess of the Sun
Yes.

This pleases me.

OT: I love using Vergil in Devil May Cry 3 and Ultimate Marvel vs Capcom 3.

Unlike Dante, Vergil's combat style has a great feeling of power to it. He can do more, with less, and he just has a feeling of rhythm that's really satisfying.
I honestly like playing as both Dante and Vergil in DMC 3 as you get very different feels from both.

Vergil has a limited arsenal but can be utterly devastating and just has alot of grace to him. Plus, there's a certain amount of fun in making energy swords fly into your opponent. It feels like you're playing a powerful half-demon and using him is quite literally power and grace incarnate.

Dante meanwhile feels more like a Rockstar. He has alot of moves at his disposal and it's just fun seeing what different combinations of stuff you can pull off with all the different abilities and weapons at your disposal. There's just a sort of chaotic fun to him and it's ultimately it just feels like your playing as a mix between a fun loving rockstar and a self aware action hero. There isn't the same feel of power and grace as Vergil, but it's still alot of fun in it's own way

As i said, both have different feels but both still maintain a certain fluid motion and are fun in how their character personalities translate over into how they fight.

Amaterasu and the Prince of Persia are fun too: The former because of the whole Celestial Brush thing, and the latter because...slowing down time, running across a wall and slicing a sand monster in two as you make your way across just doesn't ever get old.

Max Payne. That guy has had so much shitty luck, it feels good to help him take out the trash.

I know you can't technically play as him but I like to make my character looks, dress, act, and be named the same as Knight Lautrec from Dark Souls, mainly because he is the definition of a complete a-hole

Bayonetta I love playing as her because she handles silky smooth and just feels awesome to play as however I dont like her character design, she handles brilliantly but looks rubbish, to me at least.

I suppose most characters I look forward to playing as rather than just looking forward to the game come from fighting games i.e

Blanka SF2 turbo and most incarnations actually but especially enjoy playing as him in this game.
Makoto Nanaya from Blazblue absolutely love everything about this character even when they nerfed her I still find her fun to play.
Siegfried Soul Calibur (especially in the original soul calibur where he had his cartwheel move absolutely loved using that.
Cervantes in original Soul Calibur damn he was fun to play as, not so much in the sequels unfortunately (preference ofc I just disliked the changes)
Ayane from DoA (except 1 and 4 which I found crap and slightly disappointing respectively).

Its a bit difficult to distinguish between characters I like and characters I like to play as sometimes, if I really like a character I will play them even if its completely against my playstyle thus I may not actually enjoy playing as them that much (for a while at least). It sounds a bit weird but I suppose there are characters I like to play as but dont particularly like, ones I like but dont really enjoy playing as and others that are more like and enjoy and dislike and hate.

I loved Okami as well but I think it was more the whole game rather than just because I was playing as Ammy (who I like as a character).

Im also quite liking playing as the siren in Borderlands 2 that skill is just great fun to throw out and the elemental buffs are fun to mess with as well.

This. Plus bullet-time is so much fun! Diving into a room full of bad guys in slow-motion armed with dual berettas is outstanding.

Wow, we must have been playing different games.

But I'll agree with you on The Kid, he was a pretty cool dude. And that part... yeah. Wow.

Otherwise... Nier. From, well, Nier. A rare JRPG protagonist character who isn't some pretty boy out to save the world or kill the big bad, just a beefy old man looking to find a cure for his daughter in a world with no hope. He gains some friends along the way, and there's actually a very nice shift in character at the middle point of the game that alters the way you can look at him as a character, especially when NG+ kicks in.

Also want to give points to Dark Souls for nailing that feel of being a medieval knight with no fancy shit or anything, just armour, a sword and shield, and stuff needing to be killed.

The Doom Marine is so much awesome! I see what you mean, and like the way you've portrayed him. I don't suppose you knew that he killed his commanding officer, and was sent to Phobos as a janitor as punishment? Worst position on the job; thousands of miles from any action. Well, then the scientists opened a portal to Hell, and... you know the rest.

Yes, I like being able to outrun my own rockets, and having to dodge bullets, fireballs, and plasma shots (not to mention flaming skulls) rather than hiding behind cover like a wimp. Gordon Freeman's also a lot of fun. Particularity in Half-Life 2, because Resistance is Futile! Fun! Banjo & Kazooie are great, too. Though, when I've gotten them split up in Banjo-Tooie, I prefer Solo Kazooie over Solo Banjo.

I love playing as a character with something tragic to them

James Sunderland, Captain Walker, etc.

The stories with them are always depressing, but so interesting

Megatron, 'cause he's badass. And, you know, Megatron.

Also Shulk, for his obtimistic attitude, and Luka, so I can be raped by monster chicks.

Fucking Batman. I've rarely felt like as much of a badass as I did in Arkham City. Especially in new game +.

Well there are a few.
Commander Shepard is awesome, whether he is setting someone on fire with his tech powers, or throwing someone off a rooftop with her mind.
The boss from Saints Row the Third actually acknowledges how fuckin awesome it is to steal a military aircraft and blow the shit out of some tanks.
Sam Fisher from Splintercell is that lethally quiet achiever who's just so much fun to snap a few necks with (and Michael Ironside makes anything sound badass. I've been a touch concerned that they've got someone else voicing Sam in the next game).
Captain Price from Call of Duty. I know I could cop some shit from this, but he's got some of the best facial hair in the videogaming world.
Geralt of Rivia from the Witcher kills giant monsters for a living and sleeps with beautiful women when he gets bored (y'know, between monsters).
John Marston from Red Dead Redemption I like to describe as casually violently angry. And when you stroll into a outlaw camp, blow off everyone's head before they can blink with a repeater, lasso their boss, and take out any survivors with a shotgun, all for a bounty which you don't really need, it's hard not to feel like the toughest ************ in New Austin.

My answer would be very different if it was about story, or even favourite protagonist. But characters I love to play? They've been said already, but Ezio Auditore and The kid From Bastion. They're just so much fun - alternatively free running on rooftops, smoothly dispatching any archers who happen to wander into your eyeline without even missing a beat, and whirling around a beautiful world swinging a giant hammer and smashing it to pieces (there's something extremely cathartic about these two things). Love love love.

If it's less about gameplay and more about the sheer coolness of that character: Manny Calavera. Ever line of dialogue is solid gold, and even though he's pretty single-minded in what he has to do, even he doesn't know WHY he's doing it. It's pretty interesting to play as a character who's being swept along into political intrigue totally against his will.

Batman (Arkham games)- need I say more.
The MCs (Persona 3&4)- or as I like to call them, the proswagonists.
John Marsden (Red Dead Redemption)- Greatest fictional cowboy ever.
Big Boss (MGS3)- So much personality for a guy who has been through so many hardships.
Samus (Metroid)- The Prime Samus not the, ahem, Other M one...
Dante (DMC3)- Sorry Ninja Theory, but stylish and cheesy is how I like my Dante.

Leon S. Kennedy from Resident Evil 4.

He's got the swankiest leather jacket, mad rifle-reload skills, and spouts the most delicious oneliners you've ever heard.

Also, he's the king of come-backs;"Your right hand comes off!? :p"
