So, we've all seen those characters in film, TV, games, etc, where the instant we saw them, we knew we would hate them.

Maybe it's how they looked, or how they talked, or what have you, but your first impression is always, "I'm going to fucking hate this person, aren't I?".

But then, something strange happens; you end up loving them. Maybe it's a massive turnaround in their personality, or your first impression was just WAAAY off, but suddenly, they seem great.

I had one of those moments recently. See, I just finished a 5-day marathon of My Little Pony: Friendship is Magic (shut up, if you haven't seen it, you have NO idea how good it is. Don't judge me), so I could watch the whole series. Anyways, in the first episode, we're introduced to a chararater I thought for SURE I would despise. She was hyper, and annoying, and seemed like your average dumb blonde stereotype. I refer, of course, to Pinkie Pie:

I don't know how she did it. Maybe it was the Pepe Le Pew homage, or the one-pony marching band, or her pet alligator, but WHATEVER it was, she just completely won me over. She's officially my favorite character in the show now.

So, do any of you have any characters you initially hated, but grew to love?

Luke fon Fabre from Tales of the Abyss. For the first dozen hours of the game I hated the spoiled, entitled little bastard, but then he went through one of the best character arcs I've ever come across in a game, and I was shocked at how he was suddenly endearing himself to me.

Blade Kitten. Having a ditsy valley girl catgirl bounty hunter for your main character...yeah, you expect that to end up painfully unfunny, but she grew on me.

Byakuya. When i first started watching bleach I thought he was some... well a prick, but well, then I imagined his alternate personality and just added that to the series when i watch. Now he smokes pot and doesn't care AT ALL for rules... in my mind.

I read this Team Fortress 2 fanfiction [http://m.fanfiction.net/s/6211518/1/] a while back, and initially I thought it was going to be like all the rest. Just a typical, poorly-written, homoerotic smut-fiction with a SniperxSpy relationship.

Come to find out, it's one of the best pieces of romantic literature I've ever read, fanfiction or not. There is an incredible amount of character development, the attention to detail is astounding, and it is extremely well-written and well-paced. It was a joy to read from start to finish. The characters are well thought out and act like real human beings. It got to a point where I was wasn't even aware I was reading a fanfiction. I truly cared about those characters, and still do to this day.

I thought I would HAAAAAAAAATE Dante from Devil May Cry.

But, as it turns out, he was a character unlike anybody I had the pleasure of discovering. He ventured into the deepest pits of Hell with a smirk on his face, and a snarky one-liner always on the tip of his tongue.

I am TOTALLY GAY FOR DANTE. And I am NOT ashamed.

Rory from the latest series of Doctor Who.

To start with I was very much basically going 'oh no, they've cloned Mickey-the-akward-boyfriend-stereotype-smith from before he got good' but then, out of no where, some how the show made me really care about him, so much so that when spoiler warning type stuff happened, I was really rather moved and sad!

Oh the irony I guess!

I thought I'd hate Emile from Halo: Reach, but the way he went out in the game...badass!
Yeah. Kinda depressing to see him get stabbed in the back like that.

For me it was Jorge. At first he was obviously the token gentle giant, and I couldn't give a rat's ass about the guy tll the part when he jokes about good news and bad news, and suddenly I was like "FUUUUU~."

Also, the character of Jack from Titanic. I din't really like him, it was just that I was surprised at how little hate I harbored for the guy. I still cheered when he died, though...

Rolo from Code Geass. He did many things that made me hate him.
He sacrificed himself to save Lelouch because he even though Lelouch told him he hated him and he used him, nobody had even pretended to be so nice to him. Made me realize how justified his previous actions were, being a child assasin with powers that can kill yourself slowly and painfully, yet having yo use them daily, would probably fuck you up immensely.

At first, I hated how Merry and Pippin were portrayed in the Lord of the Rings films. I didn't like how in the Fellowship they started out as a couple of pranksters. In the books they were very insightful, even managing to figure out what Frodo's quest was without being told.

After watching the subsequent films though I gradually warmed to Jackson's interpretation of the characters. He has them undertake a small-scale version of the "hero's journey," enduring hardships and ultimately ending up stronger individuals than they were before. It also comes across as easier to believe for audience members that haven't read the books. I really liked seeing how they matured and developed into full three-dimensional characters.

Now I think Jackson did a fine portrayal of them.

MLP:FIM is awesome! My favourite is Rainbow Dash. But I actually thought I would hate this series and every character in it. I was surprised, when it turned out to be good.

Reaver from Fable 2. First impression was that he was a self loving asshole who killed the man who took your picture as a child. Then a little bit in and I realized how wonderful of a character he was. Hating his actions became my guilty pleasure. Rampant sexuality, straight up murder without regret, everything about him screamed love to hate. When I saw the area "Reaver's Rear Passage", it was a great moment. That kind of self mocking in a game is wonderful to see. He is my favorite video game character of all time now, and I even portray him as much as I can when making wrestling promos in a league I am in.

That and Stephen Fry...

Starbuck from Battlestar Galactica (the remake). She was an arrogant prick at the start but she grew on me more and more until I loved her. I just got a new car and named her Starbuck, yup

OT: You think Grayson from Bulletstorm was designed to be hated. Its actually true but i like him as a character.

Tidus, Luke, and Zack, from FF10, FFVII, and Tales of The Abyss.

After a while I just ignored Tidus, and when I did pay attention to him, I really liked him.

I thought Zack was going to be a whiny, misanthropal bastard like every other FF Portagonist up 'till that point.

For the first 5 hours, Luke was an entitles, selfish, dirty, annoying, eluth, dumb, and just generally thick entitles shit. It wasn't 'till the 25th hour mark when Luke changed his attitude towards the rest of the team, and I found I really liked him.

To be honest I thought I'd hate Sten from Dragon Age, I mean if you watch the trailers featuring him, he just seems like another one of those characters who are little more then a brick wall with an sword. But that was before I had a sense of who Bioware really were, and I was totally shocked when I found out how much genuine depth there was to the character and his philosophy. Now he's easily one my favorite characters in the game.

Kratos from God of War. at first i thought he was just a mindless killing machine, but as it turns out his character was actually deeper than that. (Greek tragedy type of stuff)

unfortunately after the first game he just turned into a mindless killing machine again.
