Im going to go for the Miz from WWE. the miz is a charactor, not a real-life personality so he still counts.

At first he was a joke. He was a failed reality TV star who came to wrestling to try and make a name for himself and by the way he conducted hiself in the ring, it was obvious he lacked basic fundamentals of how the industry worked. I at first thought "oh my god what a tool, he wont last long". A feeling shared by many other fans and fellow wrestlers.

5 years later he is one of my favorite WWE champions. He is one of the best promo men in the buissness, has a largely improved his in ring abilitys, knows how to sell moves well and is genraly an enteirtaining champion. all due to his hard work and dedication to WWE and wrestling.(havent seen Wrestlemania yet, so I dont know if he is still champ :S)

As for in gaming

To be honest I thought I'd hate Sten from Dragon Age, I mean if you watch the trailers featuring him, he just seems like another one of those characters who are little more then a brick wall with an sword. But that was before I had a sense of who Bioware really were, and I was totally shocked when I found out how much genuine depth there was to the character and his philosophy. Now he's easily one my favorite characters in the game.
Ditto

Kratos from God of War. at first i thought he was just a mindless killing machine, but as it turns out his character was actually deeper than that. (Greek tragedy type of stuff)

unfortunately after the first game he just turned into a mindless killing machine again.

Yes, well done. You along with half of the people on this site have achieved your goal of sounding pretentious and clever by quoting Extra Credits almost verbatim. The character of Kratos is developed in GoW 3, just because Extra Credits told you he wasn't does not mean that's the objective truth of the matter.

Anyway, this situation has never really happened to me.

Bastila from KotOR. I thought she was a total ***** when I first met her. It was nice when I found out she had a human side. My character falling for her actually seemed perfectly natural.

Your are not the only one who reacted to Pinkie Pie like that. I didn't like her from the first episode since she is the typical hyper, random but annoying characters. Sure character like GIr from Invader Zim is like that but there had been more hated random character or comic relief like Beast Boy from Teen Titan (he is the only one who pop up but I know there are more annoying character).
Granted over the course of the show I adore her (my favourite is still Fluttershy so Pinkie Pie is my third favourite after Rainbow Dash).

Alistair from DA:O. He rather annoyed me to begin with, coming off as very whiny and just not very likeable. But now that I've got into the story a little more and I've put time into going through the novel of dialogue that is each character's back story,he's one of the most likeable character's there for me.

Travis Touchdown of No More Heroes fame is, at first glance, a hate-filled sociopath with no thoughts beyond his own satisfaction, and you're more or less guaranteed to hate him off the bat.

Turns out, this was the case to the letter; but he's a very well fleshed-out hate-filled sociopath with a few nice character moments. In due time, I warmed up to him. I love to hate him, as it were.

I'm with you on this one.
I expected Sten to be a big ol' lump of armor and sword, no real personality aside from WAR. It turns out, he's actually incredibly deep. A sort of badass warrior-art appreciating-philosopher, which is incidentally what's going on all my business cards from now on.

Star Wars, Saving Private Ryan, Schindler's List, Star Wars: Knights of the Old Republic, Half Life 2, Youtube, to name a few. There are a great many things I thought I'd hate and ended up loving.

Moira from Fallout 3.

That voice. That stupid quest. But I still love her.

I read this Team Fortress 2 fanfiction [http://m.fanfiction.net/s/6211518/1/] a while back, and initially I thought it was going to be like all the rest. Just a typical, poorly-written, homoerotic smut-fiction with a SniperxSpy relationship.

Come to find out, it's one of the best pieces of romantic literature I've ever read, fanfiction or not. There is an incredible amount of character development, the attention to detail is astounding, and it is extremely well-written and well-paced. It was a joy to read from start to finish. The characters are well thought out and act like real human beings. It got to a point where I was wasn't even aware I was reading a fanfiction. I truly cared about those characters, and still do to this day.
Perhaps you'd enjoy this.

Cuanta Vida

Nice character developement, has a few nice twists to it. The drawing, however, hasn't given signs of getting any better; despite being one of the longest ongoing TF2 comics, the drawing still isn't that great.

Pandora, God of War 3. I had to leave her alone at one point and started the whole "god damn ***** can't watch over herself, why don't any NPC women in games know how to do anything?" speech in my head. Then I got back to where I left her and, hey! She's still there!

There's also a certain character in the first Sword of Truth book that makes a considerable character arc that anybody who's read the books would know who I'm talking about and that the TV show completely ignored.

Raiden from MGS. Hated him in the start of MGS2, hate turned to pity, pity then turned to jealousy in MGS4 when he becomes A FUCKING CYBORG NINJA (not a spoiler shut up)... ok not jealousy seeing his whole situation but still. Kojima did a great job of tricking me into thinking "Oh great, a fucking pretty boy replaced Snake, fantastic" to "Ho-ly shit this is so well written. My God this works so well" and it had a satisfying conclusion, to his arc at least (in my opinion shut up)

I thought I'd hate Emile from Halo: Reach, but the way he went out in the game...badass!
Well, you knew he was going to go out like a badass, is what very clearly established. I was worried that bungie would take time to give all of the characters stupid overdone deaths, but I liked Kat's death, it was out of nowhere and really helped set the mood.

Starbuck from Battlestar Galactica (the remake). She was an arrogant prick at the start but she grew on me more and more until I loved her. I just got a new car and named her Starbuck, yup
I still think that show really wasn't that great in the beginning, it really grew the beard.

Jacuzzi from the anime Baccano. He was whiny, gullible and simply obnoxious. Until later in the series when he becomes what I think to be pretty badass.

I was completely taken by surprise.

Tali from Mass Effect 1. I thought she'd just be annoying and helpless, but no, she's smart and can handle herself in a fight (although her "THIS IS WHEN IT GETS FUN!" battle cry always felt a bit forced)

And yeah, by end game she was awesome and I wish there had been an option to hook up with HER. ...I mean...Ashley's alright, but....Tali's better.

Luke fon Fabre from Tales of the Abyss. For the first dozen hours of the game I hated the spoiled, entitled little bastard, but then he went through one of the best character arcs I've ever come across in a game, and I was shocked at how he was suddenly endearing himself to me.
Ninja'd from me so fast.

Luke is easily the best example of character development done right in video games.

Almost every character from FFXIII, bravo on character development SquareEnix, but boo on your new battle system on certain enemies.
