Does anyone actually miss cheat codes? I mean legitimate cheat codes. Not that bull crap pay in game currency to get god powers in the game stuff like Jak and other games do. I mean legit sitting at a menu entering "random" button combos and getting god like powers no one bet on you having. It seems to me that mods have kind of replaced cheats I guess but does anyone actually miss them and want them back? Like a cheat code that lets you fire through a portal in Portal or something like that. I for one miss them and I'm kind of depressed that they've all but disappeared.

Yes I do. Only SR and GTA games seem to have them now. And red dead redemption. Past that, I can't think of any recent examples.

Sure, they make the games easier, that's why you don't use them when looking for a challenge. Sometimes I just want to be god and smash through the enemies, presumably scaring the hell out of whoever is controlling them along the way. I like scaring the enemy and I like feeling all powerful, like I can do anything.

But no. Now everyone has to be "Hardcore" as if video games are a military fitness test.

Well, you have sv_portal_placement_never_fail 1 which would make you place portals anywhere - it's not exactly what you're looking for but it might help.

Anyway - while cheat codes are sort of reduced, I find that just cheating is alive as ever - just use Cheat Engine and/or trainers (you can download cheat tables for CE) and you can achieve cheatiness. So, in light of this - I don't really miss codes that much, though I would have liked it if more were around, so I can save myself the couple of minutes to set things up when needed. The main problem is that I a lot of the time when I resort to cheats is when a game just doesn't work as intended in some way so having the convenience to fix it myself is...well, more convenient than going for third party tools.

I don't really PC game though I am looking to change that soon. So yeah the couple minutes of set up thing wouldn't exactly be what I call a cheat code but that's cool to know there are tools like that out there. I only ever use cheats after I've beaten the game once or twice. Just for the funzies.

I'm a much bigger console player than I am a PC player so I definitely miss cheat codes and the ability to use Action Replays or Gamesharks for my games. They made things so much fun! I still have a gameshark for my ps1 and an AR for my DS and PS2 that I use frequently and enjoy

We just had this thread.

I generally blame Microsoft for everything until I see evidence otherwise, but I'm not sure I get your reasoning here, its not hard to make it so you can't get achievements if cheats are used.

Ya know what people failed to mention about Duke Nukem Forever which I would say redeemed it somewhat? It had a cheat menu. You had to play through the game to unlock it and it makes it impossible to unlock achievements and, with the cheats on you can breeze through the game on any difficulty in under 3 hours but it's still the best thing that can be said about Duke Nukem Forever.

I would love to play Cod of Battlefield but there are no ways for a console player to get the characters to run at super speed or, super-punch enemies or indeed, any way to give the enemies huge heads and, hands.

I miss cheat codes just for funzies. There are times in the game after I have beaten it where I like to just run around and do thing for te lulz without having to worry about getting killed or something. I couldn't care less about achievements I just like to see what I can pull off in the game. Really too bad.

I kind of miss them though I must admit I do like the system like in Red Faction: Guerrilla and Saints Row 3 or even as far back as Goldeneye 64, where you unlock them by actually playing the game. Be it for certain accomplishments or just reaching a certain point.

This thread takes me back....

OT: Yeah, its a shame cheat codes are gone but what with datamining and overexposure within the industry the most important part of cheat codes is gone. Finding them. Hell, I remember figuring out a couple of the Warcraft 2 ones for myself back when I was a wee nipper.

Button codes were on the way out before Microsoft created achievements. Hell, we've had multiple series demonstrate button codes and achievements can exist in the same game. So no, you can't.

Well, you can, but it's absurd and disingenuous.

OT: I miss unlock cheats more than button codes. Felt like I earned something.

I miss them vaguely. For me, half the fun of games back in the day was messing with the less cheaty cheat codes, like model swapping in KOTOR or changing people's hair in Lego Island. But no, I don't miss actual cheat codes like god mode and stuff. Well, I guess I miss them when I get stuck in games like Titan Quest or the like, or when I want to test out a bunch of high level characters without having to run through the whole game again.

EDIT: I wanted to add that I like the cheats in the LEGO games. They're mostly just ridiculous, like turning everyone's lightsabers into brooms, which always led to a fun time.

I miss them a little, but I'd have preferred if they were only possible after a legit playthrough first.
Then again, I mostly play multiplayer games, so cheats would be a little stupid in them.

Up, down, left, right, A and Start; from Sonic 1, actually taught me my left and right when I was a kid.

CMCATDOG is a cheat from an old Toca Touring car game my buddy was obsessed with. He's no longer with us, but the cheat code always makes me smile.

Yes... I mean, where else am I going to put the money I only use to buy those cheat code books at Walmart and/or Target?

Oh well... I guess I'll have to stick with these few cheat codes where I get to drive that invisible car while using my horn to jump out of the grid the game level takes place... and with infinite lives...

I miss the Conker's Bad Fur Day style cheats. Like extra characters and novelty things, not really the god mode type of stuff.

I don't miss cheats all that much these days, although I used to love cheats when I was younger since it made a lot of games a lot less scary to a little kid.
I do miss things like the cheat codes in old NFS games(in NFS2 you could drive around as the dinosaur from the hollywood level, that was always fun) and Twisted Metal.

And Age of Empires, man I used to cheat in that.

So yeah, I don't really miss them all that much, but I would like to see more of the silly ones, and keeping them hidden rather than a sub-menu on your bloody smartphone like in SR3.
