Hey guys, for my year 11 chemistry we have to do an assignment about synthetic polymers. I have 2 questions left to do and am stuck so I would like to ask you for help.

Q1. Other than their lower melting point, state two properties of synthetic polymers which make them such useful materials in our lives?

Q2. Describe 3 arguments against the use of synthetic polymers. At least one argument must be social, and at least one chemical. (It's a short letter to a newspaper between 150-200 words).

Thanks in advance for any help you can give.

q1. Durability, versatility, funky name that sounds way cooler than "wood" or "metal".

q2. Google "the gyre". Prepare to be horrified.

Perhaps it is time to consult your textbook...and not a gaming website.
It's not in our textbook and the Escapist is a smart community so I think I will ask them thankyou very much!

As a Chem Honours graduate, this pretty much sums up why they are good. For more info, especially for year 11 level, I'm going to have to endorse wikipedia on this one.

Yes, EscapistMagazine does host a great community that can use Wikipedia.

Google is your friend, don't ignore him in favour of a post count as he is a jealous search engine.

only problem with asking my teacher is that we're not supposed to and if we do we loose marks... Stupid SACE!
What's better?

Learning the answers for the exam, but getting a lower homework grade.

OR

Guessing the answers and muddling your mind up leaving you confused when the day comes, but getting that extra 2 marks in the homework.

I must be getting old, but what is SACE?
SACE is the South Australian Certificate of Education, this year they decided to change it and now everything is messed up... The topic of synthetic polymers isn't part of our actual course, but more like some random assignment thrown in for the hell of it.

Wait, what? You have that in 11th grade? I had it on 6th grade, when I didn't even have Chemistry, only Home Ec (sp?) classes.

GOOGLE IT! Or just use Wikipedia and think, why being not biodegradable is a bad thing, why durability is a good and useful thing... unless you can't, but in that case, you better lay off the chem stuff, seriously. Or you'll inhale some toxic humes and it will be our fault.

Well said.

OT: I got a A* at GCSE. When questions like that came up, and they were not in my class notes or text books, I refused to do them. The next lesson I would confront the teacher and say:

"Listen, I'm not going to waste my time guessing the answers. You are the teacher. Teach me why __________"

It always worked. That's how I became top of the class.
This whole posts shows EXACTLY why the school standards have dropped.
