I wonder what the officials actually meant. People go to Chernobyl on tours all the time, it's not something new for Ukrainians. We even have an annual STALKER-themed airsoft hoedown and some people, who returned to live in the restriction zone. BTW the capital, Kiev, is located in ~83km from the sight.
They meant that now they are going to introduce a dozen documents you'll have to fill in and sign and a 500% raise to the cost of a tour (and you know well where that money will end up).

Anyway, welcome, everybody! Whenever you are ready. Just don't grab any souvenirs - there's quite a number of people who have died here in Ukraine due to exposure to objects that were illegally smuggled from the Zone.

I don't think I have enough caps to pay for the trip there... can I scavenge around some while on the tour to look for more?

Sorry but I'd be too paranoid about the radiation to even think about it regardless of the allure of such an historic and tragic place.

And they will return with the zombie virus which will cause the 2012 end of the world. Just a thought. Um, more to the point...interesting but I will pass. I don't have the money for a Hazmat suit...thought can I just say that...by looking at the pictures...I would like to see somebody do a Halloween attraction there. Do they celebrate Halloween in the Ukraine. If not then have it be an all year thing. Either way, that place would be a great backdrop.

*Raises Hand*

I am so in on this. I'm gonna meet some S.T.A.L.K.E.R.s, maybe become one, find some artifacts, shoot some Bandits, mutated dogs, zombies, etc. It'll be worth the price of admission.

Holy shit! That sounds awesome! Fuck cancer, I'm gonna recreate the assassination attempt of Imran Zakhaev. Who's with me? I can be MacMillan, but I need one Captain Price (completely silent), one Imran Zakhaev (must be willing to sacrifice one [1] arm), and about 150 random Spetsznaz.

OT: I would like to visit Chernobyl just to say that I have been there.

But in my mind, I would love to have a 500 vs. 500 match of paintball there with some people I know with some celebrities in order to raise money for a charity.

I would definitely go. I just hope that we're attacked by zombies. Zombies + Chernobyl = Awesome.
That would be an excellent attraction! Either laser-tag or, a paint-ball arena with the radiated undead being the theme.

I'd go. I just need to steal me some money and, grab a passport.
Now that I think of it, that would make a great game!

"The United Nations Development Program chief Helen Clark supported the Ukrainian plan both on the grounds that it would raise money for the region and teach the world about nuclear safety."

Two good reasons for me to make a trip to the site someday. I love playing STALKER as well, but even if I tried, I don't think I could enjoy acting like I was one if I ever went to the plant's site.

Ab-so-lutely. Me and my friend actually talked over going there once, now it's even easier to experience the desolation, tragedy and FUN of Chernobyl!

Chernobyl: Remember, click-click-clickity means, run your ass out of there!

Its fine to go on a tour, but for God's sake don't step off of the roads. Asphalt doesn't absorb radiation so the roads are basically the only safe place to be. If you step off the road, be prepared to absorb anywhere from 300 to 3000 times the radiation dosage of a normal environment.

Ukrainian officials also say that the project to build a new, safer shell for the remnants of the destroyed reactor will be completed by 2015.
I think that the officials got their dates mixed up. Shouldn't you start the tourism *after* the new shell is in place? I mean, the Sarcophagus that is there now is nice and all, but I'm fairly sure that it's still leaking quite a bit of radiation.

I've been to Russia many times before.
Going to Pripyat and Chernobyl to me doesn't sound unrealistic at all.
The only problem perhaps is the cost.
Any idea how much a tour would cost?
