So escapists, as I watched the season finale of star wars the clone wars, I got to thinking, what makes chewbacca such a great character? I mean even in the movies there is a well written character behind the suit, Is it his devotion or his sensibility?
So Escapists help me find the answer to the question.

I am going to assume Chewbacca filled the role of the overly loyal dog who is as much a member of the family as the grumpy uncle. I mean, in the original trilogy, that's all he ever did, bark a little, shoot a little and act like sub-human specy, falling for the trap the little bears set up for him.

However, I supposed his character and that of his entire species was expanded in the many books, comics and other material the star wars verse spewed out after the success of the original trilogy.

Think one of his kids even became a jedi? Wookie Jedi ... seriously > . >

For me it was because of how much emotion they managed to canvey through him without using words, I'm a sucker for stuff like that.

Uh... I don't.

I don't hate him or anything, but I couldn't say he's "a great character" with a straight face.

Just because we like the character, doesn't mean he's a great character.

This reminds me of those "What's so great about the companion cube?" threads, where it's full of people overthinking, and not realising that it's just a joke.

In Chewie's case he's an anthropomorphic animal, that makes a funny noise, and can shoot guns, and pilot a spaceship. What is there to get?

Agreed. I know he's popular and all, but I never really found him to be that great of a character. Sure he wasn't a total blank as he would convey feeling at different times, but he wasn't really that deep or anything. Essentially the team pet.

It's a loyal dog with empathic growls and a laser crossbow.

What more could anyone ever want?

Since he doesn't talk we can fill in the rest of his personality with our minds so every ones Chewbacca is really cool to them individually.

He's like a dog, but he understands what you're saying, presumably cleans up after himself and is a solid bro.

I don't think he's that great of a character. I don't hate him, but the movies could have been done without him and I wouldn't have cared.
