Chewbacca is the shittiest character from Star Wars, aside from the fucking Ewoks. I never understood why people loved him...his character doesn't make any sense. He was like a giant goddamned Lassie.

Chewbacca:Roooooorrrrrwr
Han: What's that, boy? Are you trying to say something?
Chewbacca: Rrrrrroooorrrrrorroorww
Han: Luke and Leia are in trouble? Where are they?
Chewbacca: Roooooooooooooooooooooooooooooorrrrw
Han: Oh shit, Chewie, we'd better do something!
Chewbacca: ROOOOOOOWWWWWR!
Han: Ok, let's go!

Seriously, that's how every conversation goes with Chewbacca. He's fucking pointless.

Oh yeah, on that note, do you know what the last line is in Episode 4?
It is, and I quote:
Chewbacca: "RRRROROOOOOOOOOORORORRRWWWWWR"

Why the fuck did anybody think that whatever he had to say was so important, it MUST BE THE LAST LINE OF DIALOGUE IN THE FILM?!

Chewbacca is fucking pointless.

To be honest I think it's more the nostalgia. Analyzing my feelings on the Star Wars characters, I love them, but I feel like a lot of that love comes from nostalgia.

Chewbacca isn't exactly the first character that comes to mind when you say "good character". Maybe it's because he doesn't say anything. Actually, he doesn't even do much either. He roars every now and then to make people back off and he helps Han fix the Millenium Falcon, but for the rest of it he's pretty much along for the ride.

At least R2-D2 had a personality, even if it was simply heavily implied.

Because you could project whatever you wanted onto him. He's a big muscle or a loyal friend or whatever you want. And compared to the horrible acting of the 3 main humans anything is good

He's a dog. Incredibly loyal, you can't really understand the noises he makes but you can't help but personify him, and he sheds furking everywhere. And, to be fair, if my dog could fly a space ship I'd love her more too.

Theres something about the way he goes "Arrrrrrwwwww!" which just expresses more irritation/pain/joy that the English language could ever hope to.

It's a loyal dog with empathic growls and a laser crossbow.
What more could anyone ever want?
These two. Plus, I haven't read the books, but he....how do you put a spoiler tag on?

Well, just check out what happens to him at the end of Vector Prime by R.A. Salvatore. Chewie, we salute you!

Since he doesn't talk we can fill in the rest of his personality with our minds so every ones Chewbacca is really cool to them individually.
This. We get just enough personality (loyalty, intelligence) to make a frame to build on.

I'm not sure that makes him a great character though. He is mostly the audience's projection. I don't think that makes him a bad character either, but without adding the Expanded Universe there really isn't enough there to be substantial.

A characters like Batman, Han Solo etc let us debate meanings and readings. Non-EU Chewie is closer to just comparing our imaginings.

(Obviously there is some projection/personal imagination inherent in analyzing Batman too, but I think there is some fundamental difference of kind).

No. Shut up, both of you. That Yuzzhan Vong bullshit never happened.

Chewie DOES NOT DIE!

*rants for an hour about the New Jedi Order books*

As mentioned previously, Chewbacca has all the qualities of both a faithful dog and a loyal friend. Plus he can fly spaceships, has a blaster crossbow, and can rip people's arms out of their sockets. What's not to like?

Actually, I don't think Chewbacca was a GREAT character, just good. It's just that, despite his growls and teeth, he's just so lovable. And he jacks an AT-ST and pwns some noobs.

Nephew I believe, Lowbacca or something like that.

Also Chewbacca died in one of the newer books.
Ya the outergalaxy aliens blew up a moon with him on it.
Correction: The outer-galaxy aliens (Yuuzhan-Vong) dropped a moon on the planet he was on. Twas, pretty epic. He tried to catch it.

The new one, with the choppy cgi and Orange Jailbait, is the one what be terrible.

The original was just called Clone Wars, was by Genndy Tartakovsky (I spelled that wrong, I'm sure), and was 100% badass.

I love that guy. He's just so lovable and fuzzy.

Like my dad.

Chewie was even better in the Lego games, because you could tear the arms off of Stormtroopers while yelling loudly. Probably a good reason for me to pick up the most recent title sometime.
