LAVA.

The rules are simple: the ground is lava. Do not touch it! Myself and my brother usually used this game as pretext to stage epic, playground-spanning fight scenes.

And of course there was the universal Guys. Guys was when you took every doll or action figure you owned, put them in a big pile and took turns taking them one by one. Then you would use your massive plastic army to stage strategic warfare on your enemy. Eventually I'd start using plastercine to give Leia pterodactyl wings and laser cannons, but my brother always took the Dragonzord AND the Megazord, so I was bloody well justified.

Stinger, Bulldog, Murder in the dark and Red-light Green-light were the most memorable from what I remember of my childhood.

That doesn't mean I was any good at them though...

We played a variation of soccer that got named "spazzies". Everyone was in goal, except for 2 players who had to battle it out 1 vs 1. If you score a goal, the goalkeeper closest to the ball when it went in switches places with you, and if you weren't in goal...you were "gay". So the aim of the game was not to be gay...

As well as the aforementioned ones (running down hills, four-square, kickball) one game that we played was where we just span around in circles getting really dizzy. Good times.

I loved beat the letter. It was basically tag, except all of the people who were the catch-ees had a letter of a word that the catcher had to get by pretty much beating it out of the other participants. Those were the days.

I remember imagining the ground was lava or acid or some other sort of disfiguring commodity...

This one was probably my best event. especially when i found out that the best hill in town for this was at the library, and a main street was at the bottom of it. i also found out that snow jumps do not work well for this. but if you know how to work your body weight you can get some good air.

Four Square. and also i remember playing off the wall, and the school food was so bad we could use a meatball if nobody brought a tennis ball.
We called that handball at school and I loooved it. Man how many lunch times spend trying to get to ace!

Good times indeed
yeah until some jerk would make up some stupid rule like 'black magic' or 'cherry bomb' or something and youd have to do all sorts of crazy crap...maybe that was just in my area?
Just in your area haha. Egh I loved handball until one partially deranged kid thought it was fun to start whipping the ball in hopes it would hit someone in the face, which it usually did...

I remember playing Red Rover and doing a front-flip over someone's arm once. Fun times were had by all.
Yup, I knocked out one of my front teeth playing that game. I hit the wall, their arms didn't break open, I flew over and smacked my tooth on a rock, and that's how I lost my first tooth!

We also played a lot of capture the flag. I lived next to a huge park, so I've played pretty much every childhood game that I can think of. Oh, and kick the can was a good one too!
