I kept getting India and Italy mixed up in my head when I was little, I could never work out which was which. I also took things somewhat too literally- when a teacher told the class to write their notes on their hands as a joke, I was the only one who took him seriously.

I used to believe that the words prosecuted and executed were interchangeable. Needless to say I never dared cross into empty lots or the like.

When I was a little kid I thought one particular cousin of mine was my aunt because she's significantly older than I am.

I used to believe that a tire rotation involved the mechanic jacking up the car and spinning all the tires, and that grown-ups were stupid to pay for it (but dad! the tires will rotate when you drive the car...)

My father once explained to me that the reason some pictures, movies, and television shows were in black and white and others were in color was because color hadn't been invented yet.

Just to be clear. He wasn't talking about color film or TVs. No that would be too nice. He had me convinced for years that EVERYTHING in the world was once only colored in shades of grey until some scientists found the magical color switch.

He also had a running joke concerning the color of my hair (mine was blonde, both my parents were dark brown). Whenever asked about my hair by an adult he would say I got it from the mailman. I always thought that joke meant it was DELIVERED LIKE A PACKAGE and never questioned it..........until the day my future catholic school principal (a nun by the way) asked me the hair question.

I swear on any holy book you care to name I looked that nun in the eyes and told her the mailman had sex with my mother.
I didn't even realize what I had said until I was 13

When I was really young (I think around 5 or 6), my nephew told me babies grew on trees. I believed him up until about the age of 14 when I discovered the existence of le sexytime.

I also though that traffic lights were controlled by sensors in the roads that could tell when a car was coming.
Wait, they're not? Huh. I guess you can chalk that one up for me as well.

I used to believe since my dad told me so when I was very little, that the gurgling sound from the plug hole was the "plug monster" that "ate all the food and water you threw away"

I used to think stuffed animals were secretly alive, a la Toy Story. When I was young and afraid of the monsters my older brother told me existed in my closet, I would set up one animal on each side of my pillow facing each way, then one in my arms to keep me safe.

I also used to think girls weren't allowed to play video games. Glad that wasn't true, my life would suck without gaming. I wouldn't even be here, thinking about it...

When I was three (yes, I can remember back that far) I was in someone's back porch, which was screened-in. There was a bird trapped inside, trying to fly it's way out but caught in a corner. I didn't know what flying birds looked like at such close range, but I knew what bees were. I just assumed that there were bees the size of birds. I still have an exaggerated, terrible fear of large, flying insects.

Yeah, I think my brother and cousin got that in my head. They had a NES and whenever I would ask to play they would say I wasn't allowed. Since they let their guy friends play, I assumed that girls weren't allowed to at all. Thank goodness my mom was awesome and made sure she told me that when we got our PS2 it wasn't just my brother's :D

I still get people who think like young me used to though. The whole, "OMFG gurls don ply vidjagmes go get barbie." Shows how old they really are, eh?

Until just a few months ago, right before turning 21, I thought that the slogan for Kay's Jewelers was just extremely fucking retarded.

"Every Kiss begins with K(ay)." I had never seen it on paper before, and it isn't a phrase, so I never, in my entire life, realized that it is just a really stupid pun. Every kiss literally begins with the letter K, and not Kay.

I truly believed that the fifty+ different commercials that I had seen thousands of times in my life were all saying that every kiss began specifically with their jewelry, and I despised them for having such a stupid slogan. And then it finally clicked at age twenty. Boy did I feel stupid.

First off, one that I'm surprised nobody has posted yet: I thought that babies came out through the mouth.
Nope, but I did think they came from the pooper.
And on that note I was 7 before I figured out that their was any difference between a boy and a girl, I thought it was a choice.

Oh no, I could actually imagine someone saying that. Along with "As video games are a well-known and proven cause of violent behavior, murder, death, cancer, and crying puppies, we should not let the delicate and sensitive minds of our womenfolk see such horrors." Yikes.

OT: Thought of another one! I used to think that animals could actually understand English! I saw people talking to their pets and just assumed their pets knew English but were mute.

I didn't think people on TV were real, and I didn't think women were allowed to smoke. I remember being pretty agitated the first time I saw a woman light one up.

My father and his brothers always talked about their high school but they never referred to it as high school. So I went around telling people I was going to go to another high school after I graduated from high school.

I used to think that in horror shows/movies that if a person died on screen that they died in real life. I didn't watch a lot of movies back than so I never saw multiple people play victims.

I think that's one of the reasons I dislike horror movies, despite the fact that I know better now.
