The now defunct 4kids Entertainment was one of the most infamous and despised companies amongst the anime community. Known for importing Anime, and needlessly and mercilessly hacking them with a Cuisinart, the firm became known for outlandish censorship, bad voice acting, and shameless pandering to young children. But a very similar company existed years before 4kids' infamy came up, another company known for importing and/or adapting foreign material for an American audience, and ironically, also ran Fox's children's programing a long time ago.

Saban Entertainment, formally a subsidiary/co-owner of Fox's "Fox Family Worldwide" division was founded in 1983 by Hiam Saban and Shuki Levy, and became famous for it's adaptations of Japanese tokasatsu shows, most notably, the Mighty Morphing Power Rangers . They partnered with Fox in 1996 to create Fox Kids Worldwide (later Fox Family Worldwide), initially consisting of Saban Entertainment, and the Fox Kids Network. Saban also licensed and dubbed anime series such as Samurai Pizza Cats, and distributed an early dub of Funimation's "Dragon Ball Z" to television. Their most famous anime property however, was Pok?mon's biggest rival, Digimon.

That being said, comparing the 4kids dub of Pok?mon, to the Saban dub of Digimon. Which company was worse with anime dubbing in terms of localization, censorship, and faithfulness to the native version? From what I've personally seen from the dub of Digimon, Saban never really got as bad as 4kids when it came to anime dubbing. Sure, there was cheesy (and bad) dialogue, and a few of your usual SatAM edits, but nothing that will generate any memes. In fact, Saban's version of Digimon Adventure 01 was actually pretty unique at the time. In the 90s when distributors of anime for kids tried to erase any and all trace of Japanese culture, Saban instead embraced it. Instead of complete name changes, most of the characters were simply given nick-names, and all Japanese locations and culture in the series remained untouched.

I'd still would recommend you watch the Japanese version since the dub hasn't aged particularly well, but for a SaAM dub. Meh, I've seen worse. But one thing that 4kids always did better than Saban was memorability. Like I said, Saban's dub of Digimon isn't great, but it is watchable, but that also means it's kind of dull. The 4kids dub of Pok?mon alone though, is way more notable. Becoming infamous for localizing food (Jelly-filled Donuts? WTF!?) As well as being more nostalgic for most people since Pok?mon was more popular with kids than Digimon. Even outside Pok?mon, 4kids' dubs are stuff of legends. Aside from the excellent Samurai Pizza Cats, most of Saban's anime licenses and dubs were... unspectacular. 4kids however at the very least, knew how to make you laugh with their pathetic attempts at editing, as well as their almost, parody style of production. Even removing basic, often all-ready-in-english text because of the corporate belief that kids are stupid and can't read. But that's my opinion, what's yours?

Most of Saban's worse traits were just a result of the standards and practices of their time. The 80s and early 90s had a very different idea of what a cartoon should be and had all kinds of arbitrary rules and hoops to jump through if you wanted syndication. That was the reason we got things like the "Sailor sez" segments at the end of the early dubs of Sailor Moon, and other such weirdness.

Still, 4kids is pretty legendary, and the internet's meme culture is an... err... richer place for them.

Y'know, for all the fame the "delicious jelly donut!" line from Pokemon gets, my favorite of 4kids' lazy handwaves to rice balls will always be the one from Yugioh GX:

Prof.Banner: *digging through his backpack* Now, it's time to eat... I think I have a pizza in here somewhere.

Jaden: *holding a rice ball* WHAT? You mean you get to eat pizza and I'm stuck eating whatever this thing is in my hand!?

Less effort goes a longer way toward making me laugh, sometimes XD

I don't know, this might be the nostalgia talking (I was aound 4 or 5 when 4kids came around and I didn't even know about Saban, other than the Fox cartoon blocks), but for all of it's inherit awfulness looking back I can't say I still don't like some of the shows they dubbed. I thought Yu-gi-oh and One Piece dubs were pretty good, nasally Sanji and Ussop were my favorite characters in it, and Joey... I wish he had his own spin-off show rather getting another Yugi-clone every season.

Yeah, the whole "4kids national anthem" thing was just fucking embarrassing as well and all the other trash things they did, but again, I can't say I don't wish that they were still around sometimes, the voice actors at least.

4Kids are responsible for the horror inflicted upon One Piece, it was so bad it made me not watch One Piece until about a year ago.

The correct answer is whoever did the Big Green Dub.
What? The Big Green Dub is amazing. Best Dragon Ball dub!

Real talk: Having watched the Big Green Dub, at its best, it's unintentionally hilarious. At it's worst, it's a bad, but somewhat competent, dub. I actually love when it is hilariously bad.

I'm probably gonna pick a third option and go with Nelvana for Card Captors.

The girls anime you bought is testing better with girls instead of boys? Just chop out the first seven episodes, rewrite every character into bratty little shits (sorry, 'make them stronger'), strip out all romance elements and charm, clumsily edit out cultural details, and pretend a male supporting character introduced in episode 8 is actually a main character by dropping any episode that doesn't feature him to try and change that.

While Pokemon has more egregious edits than Digimon did, having recently watched Digimon, I noticed that the dialog was really boring, to the point where I wouldn't consider watching it without also doing something else. The old episodes of Pokemon never really reached that point for me.

Yeah, the Saban dub of Digimon hasn't aged very well and is pretty boring. This kind of goes for most other anime Saban dubbed too, save for Samurai Pizza Cats. 4kids despite being far worse, can make you laugh at the sheer what-the-fuckery of their adaptations. For better or Worse, 4kids took more risks, Saban mostly played it safe.

I remember hearing about this. That was sad.

I can understand the lollipop but why the weird contraption? They couldnt paint it lime green and have Coby say "Why are you pointing a squirt gun at me?"

The weird thing is that they did change some guns into water guns

They did some weird stuff when they censored One Piece. They didn't even like women having boobs.
