They turned a blind eye as they couldn't be bothered really, I mean, that what it looks like. And I don't think the bystander effect is applicable when 18 people walk by in an interval of a few minutes. At the very least someone should have called the ambulance but no, we got a dead toddler who has barely even begun to see the world see one of its harshest sides as she died.

Oh and to all who were wondering where her parents were, her mother was in the store, eventually finding out and breaking down into tears.

On the bright side, I'm sure those people who walked by will not be able to sleep at night, knowing that they could have saved a girls life but instead ignored her, hopefully get nightmares and eventually seeing the consequences of their inaction and become depressed.

EDIT: Apparently the toddler isn't dead, but is in a critical condition and might stay as a vegetable forever.......

...And within 100 or so posts a genuine tragedy has been turned into a bunch of keyboard warriors posting xenophobic crap and making blanket statements about the worthlessness of humanity and/or "IF I SAW THAT I WOULD HAVE SAEVED THE KID N BIN A HERO".

Well played, Escapist. Well played. *slow clap*

Bystander Effect, you idiots. It's what makes a crowd of people walk past a burning building because they each assume "oh, somebody must have called the fire services, I'd better get out of the way". With a more horrible sight, like a dying toddler, I'd be willing to bet that a fair bit of self-deception plays a part. In fact, the more extreme a sight is, and the more removed from everyday experience, the more people are likely to brush it off. I've read accounts of people who survived spree-shootings. They heard the gunfire, but assumed it was fireworks. They saw a guy with a gun, but assumed it was a kid fooling around with a toy. They got shot and saw blood, and thought "why did that bastard shoot me with a red paintball?" - basically, in each event the human brain gravitates toward the most likely or "reasonable" explanation. I'm guessing it's a coping mechanism.

In the case of the people walking past the injured toddler - who knows what was going through their minds, if they even registered it consciously at all. But I'd bet not a single person thought "whoa, an injured child. It'll probably die if I don't help. But hey ho, I'm late for dinner".

The idea that anything bad that happens has associated blame ("somebody's got to pay for this!") is a product of litigious American-style thinking.

Don't worry JoJo. Here, take a pony.
See it's shit like this that I hate. There is no fucking need for ponies in this thread but LO AND BEHOLD we have a huge pony image in a thread about a child getting run over.
Just to try and lift spirits, man, a good way to make a pony friend happy is to give a pony to them. Here, slippy is here.

I'm sorry, but I can't think of words right now to explain what I think of this, literally, out of 18 people, only 1 tried to move the child, and one actually called the ambulance, out of 18, 1 just tried, and one actually did the right thing.

Simple fact, what are you supposed to do when you see a burning building since kindergarden, you call 9-1-1 and tell them where you are and that a building is on fire, you never, ever are supposed to let that call go to waste. We already have this post on the front page so your post is completely pointless. Yes, I would call 911 if I saw that, simply because I know better then just to walk on by. Not everyone is like that, but your supposed to do that. What happens when you see someone being raped, you use your rape whistle *if in college* and the like.

You do realise that there's a bit of a difference between "HEY EVERYONE LOOK AT PONIES WHILE I DERAIL THIS THREAD" and trying to cheer someone up? There's no need to complain and swear about an image you don't even need to look at. You could just, y'know, scroll past it and ignore it?

OT: This is horrible. I'm not easily disturbed, but watching that video was just awful. The worst part (apart from the second van) was when some people just moved around her like she was nothing. Like their day was more important than her life.

1. its China, they have too many people to care about one getting mangled by traffic
2. its China, they have the one child rule and boys are more valuable then girls there
3. its China, the thing that went through the passer-byres heads was the thought police
4. its China.
That's a very narrow minded view of a country.
unfortunately its all true, they have 1/3 the worlds population within there borders, they are very big on censorship and there have been hundreds of documentary about how family's will abandon there girl children for the hopes of getting a boy, its hard to have a broad view of a country who has absolute disdain for human rights, if you don't believe me look up Tiananmen Square 1989.
They have 1 billion (give or take) and the world is nearing 7 billion, that's just under 1/7 not 1/3.

The things the government doesn't mean the people agree with it. Every country has problems but it's not right to generalize a country of 1 billion people due to the actions of a much smaller number.
there a Communist country, the people have no say in there government, therefore the government of china is the one im scrutinizing, there people are oppressed and trampled upon, and just so you know china's response to occupy wall-street would be to run the protesters down with tanks and machine guns, now tell me they "just have problems like every other country".

Finally! Scanned this entire thread, and you were the first to post the correct answer, and one that wasn't buzzwords or blatant racism. "Good samaritans" here in China have been harshly, successfully prosecuted and sued for their actions, regardless of intent. This precedent has been established in a number of cases.

It was fear of the above that contributed to these people not becoming involved. It's fucked, but one can find similar examples across many societies.
I also ploughed through an entire thread of idiocy, racism and presumptuousness in search of a plausible explanation. Do you suppose you could post a few examples of these incidents? I've never actually heard of such a thing, and I am having difficulty understanding how one would go about winning such a lawsuit.
