You call that chivalry?

Chivalry is learning how to joust while wearing a full suit of armor. Chivalry is owning a castle and having peasants live and work for you. Chivalry is participating in tournaments to win gold and prizes.
That's not Chivalry. That's Feudalism.

Just wanted to let you know.

MORE FUCKING CHIVALRY THREADS?!

Most of us are 15-20 year-old guys, this obsession with "chivalry" is not fucking natural. Either be polite to everyone, or don't actively be a dick to everyone.

I'm sure it makes you all feel better when you inevitably turn around and cry about women all hating nice guys (and I have no doubt the cross over between the chivalry and "they hate nice guys!" crowd is huge), but it's just getting weird now.

I long for the day when we can all act our age, and rate celebrities based on their body parts.

*SIGH*

I disagree with your uninformed strawmanning of all nice/Chivalrous guys. Personally Chivalry comes more naturally to me than being a sex obsessed stereotype, so hope away for your shallow future based upon physical appearance.

"I didn't really think anything he has said is obsessing about how chivalrous guys are superior to any other guy."

I didn't say he was.

And yes, I read his, and it's not totally aimed at him, but every other fucking guy on this forum is obsessed with chivalry and try to describe themselves as being it. It makes me cringe it's so embarrassing.

So yes, I R TEH MADZ.
There is nothing wrong with being gentlemanly, it is slightly sexist, but no one is going to say James Bond is a sexist dick.
You could dissolute gentlemanly-ness into polite sexism, but so long as it is being polite, I don't see a huge problem with that.
I'm sure a true gentleman would treat a woman that proved herself as able as a man, like a capable man, but its not rude to take it easy on a kid that can't do things an adult can.

I agree with you though, thinking that chivalry is the pinnacle of awesomeness, is stupid.
I'd rather be slightly rude and strive for equality, than be chivalrous/gentlemanly and slightly sexist.

lol, I'd rather there were less "ZOMG JAPAN IS SO AWESOME. LETS ALL BE JAPANESE" threads that make me slightly embarrassed to learn Japanese >.>
Read my first post, "be polite to everyone or just don't actively be a dick to everyone".

I.e. Either hold the door open for everyone, or don't slam it in people's faces.
Then we are in agreement.

Initially it was the ways of knighthood as pioneered by the French as a way to behave both in court and out of it, then some stupid bugger decided to throw in wooing into the mix.

Somehow I think these points are related...

Also:
No one can do Chivalry nowadays because no one is a lord or a knight. Its kind of a requirement.
Have you ever heard of the House of Lords?
And what about Sir Terry Pratchett?
There are lords and knights, just not the lords and knights of old.

Alright girls, you can have your chivalry, but then no more suffrage.

I obviously don't mean that, but I hope no hardcore feminist is complaining about it disappearing. You want equality? Then open your own fucking door.

Its just a nice thing to do, I like being nice to people its nice being nice..

Besides I always to try to be nice to everyone not just girls although I'm probably nicer to girls than men..

I think some people don't like it because its seen as 'scoring points' and thats all its for but I live in middle class England, Chivalry is not dead here and equality will not kill it..

How can I be uninformed? There are nice people, there are polite people, then there are people that call themselves chivalrous and people who complain all women hate nice guys - the latter two of which people do constantly on this forum, and from what I've seen there's a fairly large cross over between the two groups.

And like I've highlighted, be polite to everyone, or don't try to be a dick to everyone. Chivalry doesn't come into it, especially the ridiculous bloody examples listed in the OP.

"standing up when talking to a lady, taking off your hat when in an elevator with a lady"

We're not in the first half of the 20th century any more, this shit is prehistoric.

And the last sentence was in part a joke, but I am bored to tears of people my age on here trying to act like they're 65.

Why are you guys getting so angry over this? I'm not the kind of guy to complain, as you put, "people who complain all women hate nice guys". Stay civil, it's the internet! Everyone is here to have a good time! If you don't agree you can say so, but don't get all pissy. U mad?

I've been called/labeled chivalrous throughout my life. It was the way I was raised, period. This doesn't mean that I view women as the "weaker sex". I treat all people equally and with respect until they prove to me that they don't deserve it.

I have been called out on this by both men and women. Guys call me old fashioned (among other things) and some ladies have shown disgust, suspicion, etc. at me for some of my "Chivalric" attitude and practices. An example; Once I opened the door for a young lady and she cussed me out for being "sexist". In response, when we ran into the next set of doors I didn't hold the door open for her. She cussed me out again...double standard much.

Anyways...
As for chivalry being dead. As long as their are a few people out their who still hold on to even some fragments of it then it lives.

I went in this thread with the exact same mind set.

I've always seen chivalry as, a Woman probably doesn't want to do those little thing's so why not do them for her, I usually open doors for guy's as well though, and obviously if the girl is a ***** or the guy is a dickhead I'll just not bother.

Chivalry was a romanticized and idealized depiction of medieval knighthood by Renaissance authors who didn't know what they were talking about. Kind of like when people talk about the "good old days" while glossing over or ignoring all the bad things about them.

While it was better than treating women like livestock, treating them like delicate flowers is still a form of patronizing objectification.

Chivalry included courtly love, also known as stalking a woman who wasn't your wife (but probably someone else's), writing poems for her and charging guys on horseback for her, because of the belief that the obligation of marriage made true love impossible.

I'd rather be respectful and polite than chivalrous.

But I'll let Methos have the last word (@ 4:00):

"Who the hell are you?"

"A man who was born long before the age of chivalry."

In a perfect world it would have been replaced by Equality but sdly it has not, because the world is still male orientated.

The most you can aim for is being a nice person :D

I consider it a point of pride that I try to be as chivalrous as possible. I know it's out-dated, unnecessary and stupid, but I like it. My GF doesn't seem to mind...

I still do it. It's how I was raised. Sad that more and more people are seeing it as an insult. Ya just can't win...
