Chivalry is dead and feminism killed it.

I'm all for women being equal to men, but that should also mean that men should be able to hit back should a women hit them unprovoked. That's just my two cents.

And before you say it, I still don't think a man should slap a girl around either.

You call that chivalry?
Chivalry is learning how to joust while wearing a full suit of armor. Chivalry is owning a castle and having peasants live and work AND DIE for you. Chivalry is participating in tournaments to win gold and prizes.
Kinda got to agree here. I've been trying to improve my manners a lot recently but differences in my manner towards different genders hasn't even come up yet. There's too many other dilemmas like taking your hat off indoors: it used to be standard but I don't like taking my hat off.

MORE FUCKING CHIVALRY THREADS?!
Most of us are 15-20 year-old guys, this obsession with "chivalry" is not fucking natural. Either be polite to everyone, or don't actively be a dick to everyone.
I'm sure it makes you all feel better when you inevitably turn around and cry about women all hating nice guys (and I have no doubt the cross over between the chivalry and "they hate nice guys!" crowd is huge), but it's just getting weird now.
I long for the day when we can all act our age, and rate celebrities based on their body parts.
*SIGH*

Heh; funny. Totally belongs here as well but it's not like you're going to stop the cycles of common thread topics.

Okay, we get it. The dictionary definition of chivalry is not technically what we think it means. Let's move on, shall we?

OT: I was raised by my grandpa, who instilled this quality in me from as soon as I knew what girls were. I have run into women who say, "I am perfectly capable of doing this myself," but for the most part, the reaction is, "Oh, thanks." It's sort of like saying, "Bless you," when someone sneezes. Some people appreciate it, some people hate it, and other people just don't care. But I do it anyways because that's how I was taught.

Equality can't exist, I don't think. I believe that men naturally have some protective instincts over women. And I don't know about all men, but several of the men I know, of all ages, are naturally somewhat subservient to women.

Took the words right out of my mouth. That's quite literally what I say to people when they ask me about it.

It used to be that if you wanted to get under a girls shirt you had to buy her dinner first. The airlines are now looking under everyones shirt and they don't provide a meal with flights anymore. Chivalry is dead.

Hell yeah but I was unaware of the elevator-hat one and I ignore the rising to talk one almost always, I'll rise if there is no other seat for the lady but other than that I won't make the effort.
I stick to the rules of chivalry that I know not because I care for the female in question but because it makes me worse to hit them, eqaul rights and their say doesn't come into, I shall hold the door for them whether they damn well like it or not. :)

It's not dead so much as it's being killed...
with all the people acting like complete and total jerks, it seems as though that terrible attitude is becoming the norm (also why swearing is so widely accepted that I'm actually treated badly because I don't)

on the note of chivalry, I try to act it, not to be sexist or any of that, just to be polite
and I get yelled at

I hold a door and the girl yells at me "I CAN GET IT MYSELF!" then takes the closed door next to the one I'm holding open

see what I mean by it's being killed, not dieing?

i dont think theres anything wrong with it. I'm chivalrous, simply because its polite. I'm not making a statement about how im better, or that women are worse. Im just holding a door open. I'm just helping.

Chivalry is still practiced only when it is convenient. The moment its no longer useful, chivalry gets abandoned. When the woman involved has no meaning to the man in question, it isn't used. Basically, its a wooing tactic and little more. At least in reference to the modern definition of chivalry.

Chivalry, by its actual definition, died out centuries ago when knights became obsolete on battlefields.

I am female and I hold doors open for people REGARDLESS of gender. I will also wait for someone that I see carrying things or with kids. I always thank anyone that holds a door for me regardless of gender and usually blush if it is a guy, I have no idea why, probably just shyness. Anyone that is rude about getting a door opened for them needs to have a reality check. If a stranger takes the time to hold open a door for you they should be thanked, especially with the lack of respect that seems rampant at this point. It shouldn't have to have anything to do with chivalry at all, just common courtesy!

I think it's nice.

A lot of girls enjoy little feelings of being spoiled and treated like a princess from time to time and if its a girl who is worth spoiling then why not.
Quite. I still practice it despite it being claimed "dead". I can't help but feel the need to be that way. Probably how I was raised, but it doesn't stop me from being polite to everyone else as well. I just show my manners to males and females differently.
same thing here too but then again I always polite to everyone

Chivalry is dead, politeness is not.

Be polite, the other person might be armed.

I treat a woman the same way I treat men, with respect. This has lead to many cases where women think I'm chivalrous, because aparently every male they know happen to be jerks. *shrugs* Go figure.

Every man (and woman) for him(or her-)self. No need for unnecessary niceness/chivalry.
If everyone was an asshole, there would be no assholes at all. So the next time you call someone an asshole, remember that he/she is just trying to make this world a better place.

Umm... dude, you do know that Duke actually does respect women, right? He kind of acts like a sexist pig but he is actually respectful.

Plus, he watches Oprah.

Seriously.

Chivalry is just good manors, whether it be towards a man or a woman. I wouldn't hold a door for a man and then let go for a woman and vice versa, that would just be rude. I would take my hat off indoors anyway, it's a sign of respect. They're all basic rules that should be followed, regardless of gender.
