Any genre of music is valid so long as it can be played by the Guitar Hero/Rock Band peripherals.

Go nuts :)
Only if you realize that playing guitar hero/rockband is only vaugely similar to the real thing.

By way of example, The metallica game might well be hard, but 80% of metallicas stuff is not hard to play.
"Hardest game" and "Hard" are not really the same, though. Most of us fake guitarists have been sightreading on expert for years now. Personally, I'd say a lot of these songs are way easier on five coloured buttons than on a real guitar, where you have to worry about things like moving up and down the neck, tone, and techniques like pinch harmonics that one doesn't need to pull off on a GH guitar.

Yeah, welll this was YONKS back when GHM was release, and I only heard it from a mate. I never made any claims to it being veridic, though.

Rage Against the Machine.

Not so much that the music itself will be really really hard to play, but that amount of awesomeness cannot be contained on a mere disk. 'course you could also say the same about any really really awesome band.

Origin

/thread.

Seriously /thread.

I just win.
Its one thing to mention a group that no one even cares about.

Its another thing entirely to mention a group that noone even cares about and act like you think you're the greatest person in the world for it.
Umm.....

Well excuse me sir.

Several points:
1: Origion is probably the most well known technical brutal death metal band like... ever. Saying that "noone" care about them is a bit of a stretch.

2:I am the greatest person in the world.

3:Sorry if me be the greatest person in the world has inconvenienced you. It is a thing that is outside of my realm of control. I did not choose this burden, however i bear it proudly.

4: I do believe the point of this thread is to pick a band for the "hardest" guitar hero game, hardest as in taking the most skill to play, ect. If you actually watched my video, you would realize that origin is an extremely fucking technical band, much more so than your beloved rage against the machine. So, by the standards of this thread, i do believe i win.

Good day sir.

Guitar Hero: Burzum. You get 2 albums worth of songs, then you have to use the knife controller to murder your guitarist. After which you are sentenced to 16 years in prison and are not allowed to use any instruments and resort to making beeping sounds and synthetic noises (Basically an ambient Dragonforce)then upon being released from jail you unlock a new album with instruments on it again. And it all comes with several church burning mini-games.

Edit: This is also slightly harder since you have to play all of the instruments on your own at the same time, except on the second album because you HAD a guitarist.

Guitar Hero: Ministry

Not only do they have enough known songs to make a game, but they've got enough recognition to make some sales. AND THEY WOULD BE F'IN DIFFICULT.

Dream Theatre GH would be ace.

Probably not as difficult as some of the other stuff posted here, but time changes, and complex parts for all instruments, I would like to play some Necrophagist on GH or Rock Band. Again, not their hardest song, but see one of my favourites below:

As for kinda/varying difficulty I would love to see in a GH (or see mroe of), Protest the Hero, Coheed & Cambria, Mars Volta and Opeth.

To be fair compared to Necrophagist, Opeth and Carcass they aren't that well known or really that technical. I mean it's just really use of an effects pedal and quickly repeating the same chords over and over again. Plus if you were to go for a technical band would you have to bring out several effect pedal controllers and some guy mixing and remastering it?

I mean in reality as far as it goes now the hardest GH would be Dragonforce because it's all just sped up music so doing that without all the effects they have would be really hard, then again I can never do Raining Blood on expert...

Necrophagist and Origin are of similar genres at least to compare, but Carcass aren't all that tech, and Opeth are in a genre of their own almost. Though if you consider the different styles Opeth touch upon, as well as their technicality in not only Metal, but their acoustics and singing, then they are probably a good choice.

It'd be more for Rock Band (keyboard for horn section, you see), but I think a Streetlight Manifesto game would be balls in the grinder hard.

Hard guitar, drum, bass, and vocals.

Mwahahahahahaha

For just Guitar Hero, I second Dream Theater. Teach those little noobs that there's a time signature besides 4/4. As for Rock Band, I would say Brain Drill, especially the drummer. Nonbelievers click here, and be warned it's technical death metal. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=iXqSa7_5pSs&feature=related

And Geezus Fuck, the bass part at 0:10 is murderous. I took a week and a half to try and learn nothing but that bit, and couldn't even get it half-tempo.

Guitar Hero: Meshuggah would be insanely tough. Constantly shifting tempos, polyrhythms, weird timings, you name it. Granted Dragonforce etc was tough, but at least its in a regular 4/4.

Oh whats that lars... you cant drum those songs... i guess your not a very good drummer then are you...yes you did sell out...no, thats right. Death magnetic was shit...
Woah, woah, I loved Death Magnetic! And anyway, it's unfair to compare a drummer to the god that is Brann Dailor (unless they're Mark Portnoy or someone else who's in the god league).

But your avatar is the best album by an awesome band, so it's all good.

What about Guitar Hero: Paul Gilbert?

Or GH: Anthrax. It would be too awesome to play (plus the vocals would be impossible because the game would keep firing you).

Oh, this is easy. First, you pick up a guitar and record some random tapping and sweeping that even you can't possibly reproduce. Then, get one of the Guitar Hero developers to chart it, and realize that you've wasted your time. There's a threshold of technical difficulty beyond which the developers just wouldn't venture. Partly because the majority of players would become enraged, but mostly because the controller only has five buttons. Imagine trying to chart the 16NPS sustained legato run from Dream Theater's In the Name of God - it would just be meaningless nonsense on only five buttons, virtually indistinguishable from any other 16NPS passage. At that level of difficulty, factors like latency would probably come into play anyway.

But if you're asking who the most technically proficient guitarist is, I'd say Petrucci. Lots of people play more quickly than him, but they sacrifice cleanliness in the process; a mistake that Petrucci is clever enough not to make.

The London Philharmonic Orchestra would present quite a challenge.

Plus, imagine all the peripherals they could sell.

Rock Band: Orchestra (instruments sold seperately). Cha-ching$$!!
