You'll get a lot more opinions in Gaming Discussion. Although the opinions here are just as valid, there's far less traffic, so let me know if you'd like this moved.

I've played a bit of Civ IV, its age shows. I've seen videos of Civ V, but have yet to install it... even so, it looks like a massive upgrade. A shame you're only now looking, 'cause they were both on sale recently at 70% (or so) off. Dx

I'm going to go against these guys and say Civ 4. I've played both, and I just like 4 better. 5 just seems...I dunno. Slower, way less user friendly when it comes to making and using custom maps, less military oriented(odd, since I've heard many things to the contrary from others), more micro than macro. 5 is a good game, just not my cup of tea.

I started with 3 and after 4 came out i couldn't stop thinking about how superior 3 was but in after enough hours put into it i realized i could never go back.

If you have the cash and want your video gaming life completely consumed by civ by civ 4 with all the expansions out of the bargain bin for probably 20 dollars, i can only assume thats the price. Then play that and wait till there is a price drop or the entirety of civ 5 expansions come out in a compilation for probably 60 dollars(estimate on my part) if you prefer disk to steam.

I've never been part of the modding community and I sadly haven't put more than 30 hours into civ 5 right when it came out so i don't now what user created content has been made. With civ 4 there are already massive amounts of expansions and game changers made by users for free but i believe civ 5 is catching up really quick because its so damn easy to upload mods and download them, I believe the kits for mods are also more intuitive i'm not sure so better maps and scenarios. And really after the basic game is done, I like replaying old scenarios but all you want are the mods that completely change civ into a new game.

Ouch, just missed the steam sale..

From what I've heard from civ fans, Civ 4 is the superior game of the two. From what I've been told it is because they say it has been dumbed down with things like the removal of religion and simplification of some of the mechanics or something. Honestly to me that just sounds like it would be easier to get into. I have civ 4 from the holiday sale, but have yet to play it (Damn you backlog)

Honestly, I'd just go with 4 so at least if you don't like it your wallet won't have quite as large a hole.

Civ veterans will generally say 4 but if you want more gentle introduction to the series and better combat/map mechanics then start with 5. Either one is as addictive as hell

Alright, for my money, I picked up Civ IV off of the steam sale ($8, go me!) and have since clocked in, according to my steam account, 54 hours.

You can either take that as a glowing recommendation, or the beginnings of a public service announcement.

But I haven't tried Civ V, so I suppose I can't be truly objective here.

4 And 5 both have different things going for them. After playing both, I found out that 4 has a deeper and more complex diplomacy, 5 however is a lot more interesting tactics-wise. This is thanks to 2 really big changes; no more than 1 military unit on 1 tile and instead of squares you've got hexagon tiles now. 4 Also had a religion system, but I never really figured that out properly. Something with converting everyone to yours or something. 5 Is also a lot more easier to get into for the new Civ player, as I was.

So both have their advantages and unique characteristics. It really depends on what you want. I found 5 more enjoyable myself, as it's not so freakin' vague.

I've only played Civ IV and it is incredible. However, I've heard nothing but good about Civ V, most of which being how it is really an improved version of Civ IV. I'm actually going to buy it soonish so I'd say go for Civ V.

I would say Civ 5. I bought Civ 4 cheap and enjoyed it but the combat is frustratingly broken, you could have a more advanced and trained unit and the enemy a more primitive unit and the enemy could still win a surprisingly large amount of times. When that happens I get so frustrated with Civ 4 that I give up on it. They fixed that in Civ 5 so go for Civ 5.

I found that the cultural victory in Civ V was much harder to get than in Civ IV because of the lack or religion, so if you prefer military victory Civ V is better, but that's just me.

I played the hell out of Civ 1 and I'd still say go for V.

It is streamlined and simplified, but not dumbed down. It has a much bigger military focus, and the elimination of stacks of doom make it a much more tactical game.

I've played every single Civ heavily since the series started, along with Alpha Protocol.

Civ IV is the superior game.

But if you've never played a Civ before, start with Civ V. It has lost some depth and complexity in exchange for streamlining and graphical improvements. It can gain some of that depth and complexity back via expansions/patches/mods. Civ IV is what it is, and isn't going to be getting any better.

So, Civ V for the potential.
