My trick-

Intentionally design the game set-up so that it will "only" take X hours to beat.

You know; small map, pangea, no barbs, etc... so that you don't lose your life in 12 hour chunks.

Yes, yes, oh god yes.

I'm still getting over a 3am a couple of days ago. I like the religion dynamic, and I love how the changes to resources, great people, maintenance/upkeep make it totally different than Civ 1-3. Am just figuring out how to specialize cities with the help of civfanatics.com. Also--I get a little tear in my eye when I get to the medieval period and hear the music from EUII (loved that one also!). I've never been a big fan of the kind of history Civ 4 is based on--if one is interested in history EU and its cousins for different eras are *far* superior. But Civ 4 is such a great game I don't mind.

Computer fanyboisms aside for a quick sec, would it be worth it trying to aquire it on the 360? The other RTS's on consoles are just plain terrible but this should be so much better because of the turn base system.
The 360 version is a solid game. It's not so much dumbed-down as I've heard a lot from people, but it is definitely simplified from the computer one (you might think that "simplified" and "dumbed-down" are the same thing, and, hell, you might be right). The game is pretty clearly more focused on military objectives rather than the other options present on the computer, as evidenced by the fact that even when you make alliances with people, they seem to constantly hold the threat of war over your head unless you give them things.

"Oh yeah, Russia? Really? No, you can't have my technology. But you can have two feet of cold steel in your gullet."

This doesn't make it a bad game, though. There are a couple new features that make building armies a little more fun, like being able to join individual groups together into bigger platoons and customizable promotions.

It should also be noted that it's not an RTS, it's turn-based, but the game moves along at a satisfying clip so it never really feels (to me) like it's too slow-paced to hold my attention, whether it's the console or PC version.

Bottom line: Yes, Civilization Revolution for the 360 is a solid pick-up, though I personally prefer the more complex Civilization IV (and the Beyond the Sword expansion) for the PC.

Also: Yes, Damn Dirty Ape, you heard right. You can't save in the middle of a game for the 360 or PS3 versions, which is a really confusing choice on the developer's part.

EDIT: Sorry I didn't read carefully enough to realize you already knew it was turn-based. Durr.

That Civilization series is notorious for stealing many precious hours without you even realizing it. It's like whenever you play Civilization, all sense of time seems to vanish.

And yes, it has happened to me on numerous occasions.

What Civ does really well is dangle a carrot in front of a players face. There's always something just on the horizon that's worth staying up for.
Haha, that sums up the feeling I had very well. I know someone mentioned the anti-poopsocking clock and alarm functions. Well, now I'm making full use of them. :)

Yeah, as just about everyone here has said, that happens alot. It does seem to be a problem. Luckily I usually have my TV on while I'm on my computer so I can tell what time it is by seeing what shows are on. Then again, I tend to completely forget about the TV, so it can't help all the time.

Not only are you not the only one, that's why there's an option to not only display the time on screen, but to set an alarm clock function of the game.
I dont know why the alarm function never seemed to work when I tried to set it :(
