I'm sure we all here like our crazy looking facial hair. Epic mustaches, crazy beards, etc. Well, as you may or may not know, the US Civil War had quite a few officers with rather outstanding decisions about the hair covering their faces.

As it turns out, I've learned that the Smithsonian Magazine is holding a vote to see which Civil War officer had the best facial hair. [http://www.smithsonianmag.com/history-archaeology/Who-Had-the-Best-Civil-War-Facial-Hair.html] So if you care at all about that sort of thing, you might want to head over there and show some support for your favorite-looking mustache or beard or whatever from a dead guy who fought in a war long since concluded.

History! Crazy Facial Hair! What's not to love?

Oh, come on. Everyone knows that Jeb Stuart wins.

That's an extinction-level beard right there.

General Burnside takes the cake. He started a whole damn facial hair revolution with out even knowing it.
And he's winning by almost 3000 votes.

This always amused me because his name was Burnside and he had crazy sideburns. I also submit for your approval General Abaslom Baird.

Also amusing, because Baird has a crazy beard. He also reminds me of a Schnauzer.

edit: I looked again at the thing and noticed he wasn't in there. Travesty.

i'd love this, if only for the fact that his beard could probably be used as a bowl to hold things in.

You do know that sideburns are named after him, right?

Exactly what I was going to say. Voted Burnside, his facial hair gave us a word, that's something none of the others accomplished.

Haha, the first thing I thought about when seeing this picture is Captain Price.

My vote goes to General Burnsides.

Bah. All have been mere poseurs since the reign of the mighty Guan Yu and his magnificent beard.

This guy just ninja'd a thread in the first reply!
If it wasn't for burnside and his wonderfully hairy facial hair, we wouldn't have the modern side burns (burnside, side burns, see what they did there?) as we know it!

General Burnsides other portraits are far less famous.

A true gentleman, of indelible class.
