Civilization 5 - you guys enjoying it?

I downloaded the demo on Steam. It's definitely been a trip. Almost every review I've read has noted that Civ V really takes off the kid gloves regarding huge, sweeping changes, and I'm finding that this is true, for the most part. It's pretty jarring at first, particularly the changes to the combat system that essentially render the time honored strategy of sending twenty Artillery units at an enemy city and hoping for the best to be completely infeasible.
The demo allows 100 turns of play, enough to just start getting a feel for things before it cuts off, so I can't make any in-depth judgments just yet, but so far, it seems to be just as fun and addicting as previous Civ games, while also being astonishingly different.

It is out here in the jolly ol' USA. I'm guessing everyone else is too hooked to pull themselves away and share some first impressions. As for myself, I thought combat was vastly improved over its predecessors. Taking away the giant stacks of doom was a decision I was unsure of, but I'd say it worked out for the better. The only real beef I have with Civ 5 is oversimplification. They took away health mechanics, and there seems to be less variety overall. Eventually modding and/or expansions should help amend this to a degree, but it was a bit disappointing to feel so limited at launch. I thought the classical soundtrack of Civ 4 was better too, but that's pretty minor.
Oh, and Hot Seat mode was not there on launch either, but I think I read that they will be patching it in later. Until then, the house will be in a state of civil war for control of my computer.
Actually I'm a huge strategy fan, it makes up most of what I play. I've spent 545 hours playing the Total War series, and 657 hours total playing RTS games, and that's only on my current computer,with a few games excluded.Chal said:

My canadian friend says it's good and I myself liked the demo (altho it ended too fast for anything in-depth)
But I have one question for anyone who knows, why the hell are they releasing it in North America before Europe? Even on things like Steam, I allready have the damn game installed but they just won't let me play it.

Question to those playing, is there an option to turn off the turn-limit? I'm guessing not, but just hoping, it's the thing I hated most about Civ3, I like to take my time with the game (and enjoy the modern age which I love, as compared to the game always ending barely as I finish researching everything)

I haven't played previous Civ games, so I can't say how it compares to those, but I am definitely enjoying it thus far. My only real complaint about it is that the tutorial sucks so I've had to figure out everything through trial and error, but that's probably not going to be an issue for you if you've played previous games in the series.

As for Civ5, I'm holding off on picking it up. I just bought Patrician IV, which is absolutely rocking my fucking world right now. I'm content to stick with Civ4 for all my turn-based strategy needs---or, better yet, Alpha Centauri---still far and away the best game of the series even 11 years after it first came out.
Or "Nuke Montezuma", like in the CivAnon ad. I played all the Civ games from 1 to 5 and I have actually NEVER nuked anyone 0_o Its probably because I think it's bad for the environment.Cheveyo said:
Anyways, I preordered the game today (it's released a bit late where I live). After playing the demo, here are my thoughts:
- The presentation is stunning and a vast improvement. I love the art-deco style of menus, land tiles look really pretty, if a bit harder to tell apart than before. Well, you can always turn on the grid, or the strategic view.
- The combat revamp is great. The one unit per tile rule and 10HP per unit, combined with the fact that not every combat has to end with the elimination of a unit makes the system very similar to Advance Wars for DS IMHO, and that is a good thing, because AW kicks butt.Takes a while to move all the units, but movement is a tactical choice and not a chore, so it's not boring.
- Two things sadly gone are: the religion system and diplomatic transparency. In Civ 4 you got a detailed explanation of why an opponent likes or dislikes you, now the relation is described with a single word like "hostile", and you don't really know the opponent's motivations.
- Diplomacy screens are pretty though, and each leader talks in his/her language, though I kinda expected they would have more lines. They don't talk that much compared to what they say in the subtitles.
- Social policies are cool, they make you feel like your civ is "levelling up" and allow for nice civ specialization.
Overall, looking forward to wasting away another few months (or years) on the new Civ!
