I'll really need to be convinced on this one.

My all time favourite still has to be Civilization 2, because it felt more like you were in control. 1 was VGA but still had charm. 3 brought in "trying to be funny" which really wasn't, and 4 is a total cheating bastard.

Seriously, 4 cheats like a cheating thing with a sleeveful of Aces. It doesn't even try to play fair, and when you're in a game that lasts days, the computers ability to cheat makes you RAGE.

With Colonization as well, it was a tangled mess of cheating making way for decent intelligence and above King level, it was just a constant battle to keep your cities from crumbling - and micromanaging each turn reminded me too much of MoO 3.

Alpha Centurai was fun, if you ignore the Cloning Vats Win Button, and there's always the chance they could go towards that.

But sorry, after Colonization, this God gamer needs convincing you're not going to swap out competitive play for "So sad, you lose".

Oh HELL yes!

I could literally play a civ game for hours upon hours.. I remember starting once at 9 AM, and the next time I looked at the clock it was 5 PM.
Good times...

Sure, in IV on the higher difficulties the game cheats like a mofo, but I stayed away from those...

Anyway, I have to go with this guy:

Perhaps this one will halt the continued decline of the series following Alpha Centauri.

The strange rules about wonders and odd victory conditions. Give me Civ II or Alpha Centauri ANY DAY!

Help with some elements huh. Maybe this time you can tell me all the elements that make up the combat so I don't send in 3 units to only see them die because they can't kill the last guy

Fallout: New Vegas, Heavy Rain, Final Fantasy XIII, a hundred other games, and now this? On top of everything, this is going to be my first year of Uni! Wow. I should start organising my funeral, because I sure as hell am not going to survive this year...

Hmmmm, I haven't actually played a Civ game sense Civ 2. I'm not sure how to feel about this. I'm afraid it may have fallen victim to over complication like other games of it's ilk (MOO 3 was terrible). But I am intrigued, if there's a demo I'll probably look into it.

I never really got into the whole Civ scene. I am a big RTS fan and love a bit of strategy. If I can have a scout around and find Civ 4 for fairly cheap do you think it's still worth picking up? A few of the posters above mentioned that it's not the strongest in the series, yet glancing at some review scores it's scored rather highly.

Or should I just wait for 5, do I really need to have played one of the previous games to enjoy number five?

I am far too excited about this! Hex grids are a great advancement as they allow for completely equidistant movement. Before, moving diagonally along squares allowed you to move further than moving up,down, left or right.

Civ IV was a piece of junk in my eyes, i hope they make this one a lot better, i might take a look at it.
Care to expand on that? I'm pretty curious about Civ4.

I've always been very curious about the whole Civ series actually, because I really want a true strategy game for once, not a tactical war game. I tried getting into that genre by buying The Settlers: Rise of an Empire (shush, I'm new to this ok?) and whilst being very enjoyable it was also extremely simple.

I thought Civ4 would be better, more complicated, but you don't seem to hold a very high opinion about Civ4. Care to explain why?

It depends on what you want in terms of "strategy". Civ is turn based first of all, and there's simply a LOT to manage.

In fact, why not try it yourself?

The beyond the sword demo contains all updated mechanics included in the 2 expansions (plus the original, obviously). I've never PLAYED the demo, so I really hope it has a tutorial level because you will be confused as hell. Not many other games need to include an encyclopedia in them so you can look up terms and game mechanics.
