Hey guys, who else is psiched abot CivV??

well, i have never played a civ game before, but i always thought it was an interesting game, now, i love RTS´s except i am not very good at them, the very first RTS i played was AOE, and stuck with the franchize for years, that is not to say its the only one i ever played, another RTS i came to apreciate was "Panzer Commander", wich seemed amazing for such an old game

now, Civilization games?? i never played them, they didnt catched my attention, i have no idea why not (perhaps because of the name?? or the lack of marketing here in MX??) but now that i see it, i think i will love it

now, there is one thing in my mind, I SUCK AT RTS GAMES, really, i do, i get into the game more like sim city than RTS and end up losing on the long run, gather resources that are not immediately needed or focus in the development of my research instead of the building of an army or defense (i only won once, because i built a strong enough wall to keep the enemy out untill i got an army)

soo... whats your strategy?, how do you play? and definitelly will you getit on steam?? my Steam account is HentMas, if you like we could play in CivV some rounds.

TL;DR I LOVE RTS, BUT I SUCK AT THEM!!! WHAT´s YOUR STRATEGY?? AND WHY WONT YOU BE MY STEAM FRIEND?? "HentMas"

EDIT: i now know its a TBS, but the question still remains, whats your strategy???

Civ isn't an RTS. It's turn based, which is one of the many reasons I don't like it. Think of it like a board game, except with more rules and options. You can take your time, too, when you're planning. In general, for strategy games, build up an army then upgrade it. Defend until you're strong enough then surge forth with all of your units at once, as long as the enemy can't attack you from behind.

Okay, well Civilization is not an RTS (real time strategy) game. Its a TBS (turn based strategy) game (twice ninja'd while typing).

A good strategy? Start off on low difficulty, with just a few other countries on an average sized map. Don't work on technologies one at a time, look at the big picture and use the tech tree to plan ahead for advances you want. Have several automated workers building improvements at all times, send a few workers on specific tasks such as road building. Build a large military, but don't only build military. Don't expand too fast, but don't stay too small and let everyone overtake you.

edit-

once you get good at these, add more countries. Once you achieve victory with a full nation roster, up the difficulty.

Civilization is a turn based strategy, which is fairly significantly different from a real time strategy. My strategy usually involves expanding rapidly at the start, building new cities, then working on tech and military (and economy and city improvements). I also like to go for gunpowder first. As for playing some rounds with you, I'm far to impatient to play a turn based strategy multiplayer... far too much waiting, so I just play singleplayer.

Yes, as stated before, it's not an RTS, it's a 4X game.
Your choice of words may belie your problem with civ: you caould be rushing it. You have all the time in the world: don't rush a decision, weigh up the pros and cons of everything you do.

The only Civ game I've played in-depth is the Xbox 360 version of Civilization: Revolution, which I'm given to understand is a severely watered down version of Civilization IV. I enjoy it quite a lot, even if I'm not very good at it, but I've always wanted to get my hands on the "real" version of the game. Since Civ. IV is apparently incompatible with Windows 7, I'll be waiting for V.

My knowledge of strategy when it comes to these kinds of games is limited at best, but I'm looking forward to it all the same. I expect my Civ. Revolution strategies won't get me far in V, though.

I like to turtle while building up a massive army. Then crush everyone.

It works for me. At least against bots. Whenever I play against other people I get steamrolled in 10 turns.

I like to expand and push culture, then crush weak civs with my mighty army!

Ok, I won't go on about the whole 'its not an RTS' thing, as you've been told know, heh.

Anywho, I'm pyschied about Civ 5 - looks like it'll be a major improvement over the previous versions of civ - Civ 4 was good, but really, it did feel like the series' was starting to falter; Civ 5 is, from what I've seen, shaping up to really revitalize the series'.

Whilst it is watered down quite alot, its still got the basic core idea's down, and I still enjoyed it - that said, I'm hardly the most harcore civ fan, nor am I actually that good at it.

The important question here, of course, is "will the menu music be as awesome as it was in Civ IV?"

That's important.

Sadly, no. Nothing will ever be as awesome as the Civ IV menu music.

Actually, I am currently running Civ IV on windows 7 x64, so you should be able to play it if you had a copy.

OP: Usually in games I get workers early and tech military before anything else, so crushing the opposition is easy. If there are any civs nearby, I would go for them early and then have the advantage of the extra city (or two).
Other than that, the only other advice I can give is to be careful when attacking a city protected by longbowmen... those things are OP for defense :p
