I'm about to buy Civ V, and am deciding which way to go about victory. I'm probably going either Military or Space Race, but I don't have much experience. Which ways do you usually win, if you choose to win a certain way, do you have to, or should you, completely focus on that aspect of the game?

Sounds like a pretty big design flaw right there..

Military victory is the most straightforward way to win. I would recommend playing as Japan for this, as their units will always inflict maximum damage, even if they're down to 1 HP. Also, their Samurai unit is the most powerful footsoldier for quite a long period of time, from the Medieval to Industrial Eras.

It's a good idea to focus on a particular victory condition right away and build your civilization around it.

Military = build huge armies
Cultural = build lots of wonders
Economic = focus on gold
Scientific = maximize research capabilities

Shafer immediately responded to Chick, saying, "I don't think it makes financial sense to make great AI," arguing that budgets can be more efficiently allocated to other areas of development.

Jon shafer the lead designer of civ 5. The AI in civ 5 is horrible

The rest of the game is good

I'm sorry but how can a game be good when its gameplay relies heavily on AI to give you a good strategic match and that AI is poor?

Personally i'm still playing Civ 4 and I see no reason to change up to 5 as yet.

That can't be right surely, in civ 4 the AI would quite happily build appropriate units, especially navies. To gain control of a sea in civ 4 I have to build a huge fleet. Are you playing on a lower difficulty perhaps?
