It seems that in the sea of mediocrity that is modern music people often forget about great artists from decades, even centuries ago, who's talent far supasses that of many modern musicians (Sadly). Post what you think are some of the best examples of classical/opera music.

I'm no Classical fanatic (More Jazz, Classic Rock, Alternative rock sort of person) but I do enjoy many different songs of this genre.

My picks:

Waltz of the Flowers [http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Cg1dMpu4v7M]

Vesti la Giubba [http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Ky271W94VHA]

La Donna e mobile [http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=8A3zetSuYRg&feature=related]

Ode to Joy [http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-kcOpyM9cBg&feature=fvw]

The Thieving Magpie [http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=53NqvQoK1iA&feature=related] (Only video I could find of it :p)

Habanera [http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=6fZRssq7UlM]

I have many more but I'll leave some for you folks.

Forgive me, o' benevolent gods of The Escapist for I have bumped mine own thread! Show me mercy!

I can't believe that no one on this site likes classical music.

I'm partial to the works of Beethoven, so my favorite piece would be "Allegretto" from Symphony 7.

Then right after would be Piano Concerto No. 5, Opus 73 in E-Flat Major

Followed very closely by Requiem Mass in D Major by Mozart

I got to see Symphony No. 7 Last night at my local theater done by an English orchestra. They where really good.

If you'd used this, you might not have that impression. I'll have my previous answer momentarily.

EDIT:

For Stravinsky...<url=http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=g_2qbWVzxzw>Petrushka and <url=http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=9uMfXh4OOx8>Rite of Spring come to mind. Also, Holst (for The Planets), and Mussorgsky (for Night on Bald Mountain and Pictures at an Exhibition).

And I'll shoot a mention or two at Dvorak and Handel (just because I love the Hallelujah Chorus).

I love Classical. (Baroque to modern, but I prefer the romantic period myself)

Among my favorite composers are Rachmaninov and Mendelssohn. Rachmaninov just writes with such powerful raw emotions, it just grabs me. Mendelssohn's violin melodies tend to be interesting enough to keep me captivated even on long pieces. Brahms is another great one with a lot of power. Mussorgsky's kinda a one hit wonder but I love him anyway.

Respect to Beethoven and Bach and the others naturally. But people almost always know about their great works, so I won't be redundant.

not that Rach and Mendel aren't famous, but all to often there will somewhat lesser know composers that I've only heard a bit from. For example, I adore some of Telemann's string quartets, but I simply haven't heard enough of his work.

And sometimes I listen to Boulez over the loudspeaker just for the lulz.

Thing is, I wanted to generate some fresh discussion and resurrecting an ancient thread just to post "These are my favorite songs." on page umpteenmillion will hardly generate such discussion. I'll just let this thread die in peace.

Those two songs weren't exactly my cup o' tea, they weren't bad though.

I'd also like to add:

Who do people bump their shit like 4 times within an hour?

Anyway, look up Jeremy Soule. One of my more favorite modern composers.

I only bumped it once. I bumped once it got to page two, I guess I assumed people are like me (Never go past page one) I must've assumed incorrectly.

He (Soule) is alright, I looked him up on the 'tube and his songs sound like background music from any "Epic" game or movie.

My group just finished play "Blue Shades." A classical piece inspired by Louisiana Jazz and the minor third interval. Written by a wonderful contemporary composer Frank Ticheli.

If it's good (and it usually is) I love classical music more than I could every enjoy any of the auto-tuned garbage that floods the popular music scene these days. That said, I'm more of a metal fan.

Um, haven't you seen me in most of the music threads rattling along about my love of classical? I'll put it this way, I have a 30gb ipod which is filled with nothing but classical. It's the only type of music I'll listen too.

I've seen the Melbourne Symphony Orchestra perform that piece, and his 9th as well.

I'll admit I'm not a big fan of classical music, but I adore modern instrumentals such as soundtracks and such. Star Wars, Final Fantasy... the list is huge, really.

Actually, I've been trying to get into classical music for ages since I think there's a lot to it; I have just simply heard nothing that really dragged me in. I listen to rap, ska, metal, punk, dance, indie, blues and any combination of those genres but I have never heard classical music that actually dragged me in as much as Fort Minor, Streetlight Manifesto, Disturbed, Bad Religion, Daft Punk, the Arctic Monkeys or Blue King Brown respectively.

Tell you what, you post me a classical song that sucks me in and isn't one everybody knows anyway (like pretty much all the ones in your opening posts) and I'll ehm... give you a cookie.

To give you something to work with, classical songs I do like are things like this [http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=86Y447mzPV0], this [http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=a9S_2nn6OK0&feature=related] or this [http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=o7VRWpr1UHw], this [http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=qmxFAT581T4], this [http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=KOhDAYrUKFs], or this [http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=UzpCQhSvt44] or this [http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=vXEAp021_cU]. Though as you can see, all of that is movie/game soundtrack material, and none of it is "the real deal".

Too bad they didn't play his 9th when I saw it.

That's my absolute favorite.

Time for some education;

That should get you started. Some of those movies come in more than one part as well, so you'll have to dig around for the next one if you like them.
