"Classics" that you were underwhelmed by.

Subject is in the title but I got to say I watched blade runner and........
It was either really boring or I'm really stupid. And I don't think I'm particularly stupid because I have read the entire wheel of time series thus far and you need allot of patience to keep reading book 10.
that aside I don't understand the whole stigma around the movie. I walked in expecting a slow burn but talk about no burn. Instead of you know investigating and stuff he just roams around getting in arguments about philosophy with the replicant girl before very suddenly everyone starts very suddenly getting in gun fights. and then at the end it just ends. I mean the bad guy dies suddenly no kind of personal goal is achieved and the movies over. I walked in with the highest expectations yeah but I still never once enjoyed, was intrigued, liked the characters or anything that would typically constitutes a good movie.
I'm not saying it's a bad movie so don't get angry but I seriously didn't get it.
anyway what classics were you less then fond of.

Once Upon a Time in the West was supposed to be this great western, but I couldn't stand it. I hated the characters and it bored me to death. Sergio Leone has no sense of urgency (the opening scene of the movie is three guys waiting around for a train for ten minutes while a fly crawls around on one of their faces. That's it.)

Pulp Fiction was brilliantblahrgfkaogjerghairhga!!! Funnily enough, I didn't like it the first time I watched it. Re-watch made all the difference for me.

Game: Half-life 2. But that was purely circumstantial, not the game's fault at all.

Movie: Citizen Kane. Again, my fault. I was expecting something really clever but it felt like something average done to perfection... if that makes sense?

Movie: I don't think anyone thinks that Frankenstein stood the test of time. Not the movie's fault.

Book: As I Lay Dying. How anyone can consider this a masterpiece is beyond me. It is the bane of my existence.

Book: The Catcher in the Rye. Sure, it wasn't that bad, but nothing happens!

yeah I also didnt "get" bladerunner I dont think its bad but...wheres the brilliance? instead its more just an hour or so of weirdness in fact I can bearley remember remembering what the hell was going on

but that said after a bit of thinking I guess perhaps the "themes" and/or Ideas of Philip K. Dick (and I guess you could say its an early example of cyberpunk in film) were more groundbreaking back then (the visual style certainly is/was theres no denying that)

so mabye it was so underwhelming because to us its really nothing all that new (except you know...weirdness)

I guess for me S.T.A.L.K.E.R. there are actually alot of good things aboutt he game but really its just not very engaging

Wow every movie mentioned above I love and would consider deserving of their classic status but all (well most for very different reasons). Thats not to say I don't completely respect people being underwhelmed by them.

For me the underwhelming classic would be '8 1/2' by Fellini. I thought the imagery at times was laboured (specifically the early scene as the protagonist was elevated above the traffic) and the film was self indulgent. Boo hoo hoo I'm a film director (surely for those who do it especially during the mid twentieth century working in European art cinema) and I've got writers block, diddums. Try funding a masters degree in film by working in admin then you have something to complain about.

Has anyone else noticed there rarely any inbetween with 'Blade Runner'. Most people either love it (as I do) or hate it.

EDIT: "the every film I love comment" was made before STALKER was added which I've not seen.

This thread is going to descend into violence at some point.

Deus Ex was pretty bad. I'll ignore the graphics for the sake of not being a graphicwhore, the fighting felt impersonal and distant, the maps were pretty samey, and my character had less dimension than the 2 polygons which made his face.

Movie- The godfather. 1 and 2, haven't put myself up to watching 3 yet.

admittedly, I have only gotten to halfway on both, and after half an hour I was only half watching, but meh, It is the movies' job to hold my attention

Book- Harry Potter, though I appreciate that the fault for that was mine.

I guess The Godfather. But that's the case with a lot of people, I think, especially when they're my age.

Good movies, certainly, but I never did understand what put them so high on the IMDB Top 250.

And I never got quite as involved in Deus Ex as I wanted to be, though I still think the sequel was much worse.

Apart from that, I think I've greatly enjoyed every classic I ever watched/read/played.

Yeah I guess what you say makes sense but still I wish i liked blade runner more than I did. And I like S.T.A.L.K.E.R. and for that matter a lot of other Russian games. But hey it's all just opinion right?

Lord of the Rings the books, I mean it was a brilliant and beautiful story but it almost hurt to read, the hobbit was better though.

Anything by Mark Twain. I find all of his works to be terribly terribly dull. I can relate to none of the characters (despite being "timeless") and the situations are almost as ridiculous as how the characters respond to them.

Most of Shakespeare. Particularly, Romeo and Juliette. Maybe it's just the rendition, but there has never been a portrayal of Romeo that I haven't wanted to beat the crap out of so he has something more real than his 5 minute infatuation to ***** about. Juliette is just annoyingly gullible and gets drawn into Romeo's lovey dovey crap.

All of the original 2D Zelda games as well as Pokemon in all its incarnations. Just like.. Buhhhhh... Even when I played it for the first time. Throw the original Mech Warrior in there along with Half Life. Sorry, but they just weren't as good as people seem to claim/think they are. Sins of a Solar Empire was pretty meh. Very very slow paced. I much prefer small groups of quick units for my confrontations.

Risk. Monopoly. Yahtzee. Parcheezi. To the inferno with those games. They are terrible. Risk and Monopoly are especially bad since they take a horribly long time.
