Yeah definitely the first few final fantasies. I just ... they're the same as the latter ones only not as fleshed out.

I'm struggling to get into Okami, at the moment. It probably doesn't help that I don't really have the right TV for the graphics, but even otherwise, having trouble getting into it.
That isn't surprising. You have to sit through, like, an hour of babbling cut-scene dialogue before you can even play it. It makes you wait the longest time for the really pretty and cool stuff.

Oh, and in regards to OP: Pretty much any Mario game. I just could never enjoy the aesthetics or platforming. I grew up with Sonic (up until the end of the 2D era, anyway) and found that to be a much more my thing.

Two games that are often considered classics that just never grabbed me are Half-Life 2 and Bioshock. Have attempted to play both, Bioshock I've started three times now, but I always get bored with them and move on to other titles.

Deus Ex.
I just got interested in the Deus Ex universe and figured I'd start from the beginning. Problem is, I'm not really used to games of that type, and I'm not used to mouse and keyboard so well. And while those are little hiccups that I can easily get over (at least the first one is), I realized that I'm just playing it so I can get through it and move on to Human Revolution, and I realize that the first is really more rewarding if you take your time. A game that beautifully fits the "play your way" type and I managed to play it wrong.
I am going to finish it, I can tell this game is really good if I give it it's time, I'm just going to play Human Revolution first so I'm not trying to speed through it.

See, that's what I was thinking.
And while I do realize I'm going to run into the same problem, gameplay not as good, which is a problem I ran into going from God Of War 3 back to the first two, at least I won't be regarding it as a speed bump.

Honestly, the vast majority of what was awful about Deus Ex 1, was awful at the time. (And I love that game.)

In MGS you meet someone for the first time and have to sit there for 15 minute while they tell you their life story. Their incredibly boring life story. It just drags on and on. I for the life of me can't understand how people find that crap remotely enjoyable.
... Hang on, when did I ever say that? Or were you quoting someone else and the forums fucked up? I actually love MGS unironically.

Other "classics" I can't get into are any Half-Life games and perhaps more tragically Doom, again 'cuz Metroidvania. I just suck at navigating. I tried the original Deus Ex one time and while the graphics have definitely not aged well, I was more shocked by how absolutely clunky and shitty the interface and inventory managing is.

Captcha: play it again, sam. <-- No.

Gotta second this. I remember playing Deus Ex something like 15 or so years ago for the first and only time. As much as I love the story and the atmosphere, the graphics, interface and especially combat were clunky as hell even back then. Which is probably why I haven't gone back to replay it. Really, if the combat was fixed to be...well, fun, I think I'd actually go back and replay it. One thing I was glad for in HR, though too bad the boss fights were broken as hell.

I'm actually quite a fan of classics, however Saga Frontier for the PSOne was just too damn hard for me to get into. And by hard I mean freaking hard. I love the concept art, the characters, even the gameplay is pretty fun (what small amounts I've gotten to taste anyway), but how crushing it is just puts me off every time I try to conquer it.

It's one of those games that leaves zero room for error as soon as it starts, even when (especially when) you don't really have any idea what the hell is going on. There really isn't much introductory for battles or mechnics, and it's beyond frustrating. I literally died on the first enemy encounter I fought due to some random unfair boons the enemy bestows on themselves prior to killing you off.

I might give it another go in good time (it's been awhile since my last attempt) and hopefully I can get to the meat of the game to really see what it has to offer.

Deus Ex. I tried. I really tried, and by god did I wanna love this game, but I just couldn't. The gameplay in its entirety was just so ...odd.

Icewind Dale - I entered a basement to punch cockroaches and my entire party was annihilated. What.

Baldur's Gate - Kinda went some places, then some seeming badass entertaining dude wanted to join my party. So I was like hell yeah, and it caused my two other party members to hate me and the entire town to attack me.

So NOPE to those pillars of CRPGs. Things were just a bit too obtuse for me.

response to self.
Made a mistake and redownloaded OoT from Nintendostore. They make you a deal where if you owned something on Wii and it comes out on WiiU its a fraction of the price. So I dropped another 2 bucks on the thing and after about 10min I find myself bored to tears again.

Theres a lesson in there somewhere.

Final Fantasy Tactics is the one the bothers me most. I can't get over the controls. This one hurts because it is apparently fact that FFT is the gold standard of sRPG's and I really love the genre ...

I also have to make myself stay with Super Metroid. And Symphony of Time as well. Might speak to my lack of patience. But something about the controls and backtracking through 2d environments just doesn't work for me. (it does in Guacamelee though)

And like apparently a few of you I gave up on Ocarina of Time. Didn't grab me at all. But this one doesnt bother me as much.

Fallout for me too. It was already a bit dated when I got around to it sometime in the last decade, one of those cheap reissue boxes that only came with an on-disc manual (that I didn't bother to print out). Anyways, I made a character that wasn't really suited for combat, thinking I wanted to focus on all the cool interaction stuff. I got someone to follow me, but they didn't want to do anything when we are attacked by something. So that was hard. And then, suddenly, there was Game Over. I had failed to deliver that thing that you had to deliver in time. Never went back to it, and never played 2 either. So much for my RPG credentials.

Also, I tried Okami a while back when the remaster was dirt cheap on the PS store. Looked cool to me (except for that super annoying opening lecture you had to keep pushing a button for), but it gave me motion sickness, like many games do. I keep wanting to give it another shot, but I hear it takes ages to complete.

happening, and really feels like true 'survival horror'. But the murderous difficulty, respawning enemies
Ahh nothing spooks me more in that game than one of those service bots spawning right behind me and going "Welcome aboard" right into my face. Or one of those frigging ..forgot their name..cyber maidens? Spawning around a corner you checked 10 seconds ago and then screaming THE CHILDREN DON'T LIKE YOU.

On that topic: System Shock 1. I love SSHock 2 but 1 is just too archaic for me. The controls, the interface, the graphics although usually I don't mind the old DOS stuff.

Also Silent Hill 2 (yes yes crucify me). The general atmosphere is great and all...the music is cool...everything is fine as long as no one opens their mouth. The dialogues remind me of the worst horror movies. You realize pretty much from the start that something is wrong. You kill (or evade) several monsters. Afterwards you talk to some guy who is clearly not feeling all that well...and then leave him with a "See you later" to continue your search alone. Some of the dialogues are pretty creepy but most of it is just..cringe-worthy. Yes the characters are mentally unstable and all that but still... I mean some of the stuff was pretty cool like the small girl that seems to be unable to see the monsters or that woman you get the knife from. No idea if I will continue playing it but right now I feel like screaming at the screen every time a "typical horror movie" dialogue happens.

Been trying to play the classic X-Com and yeah, I just can't. They really throw you in the deep end with no explanation of any of it's mechanics at all (fortunately the Steam version comes with a digital manual). I don't mind retro graphics and stuff, but the interface really leaves something to be desired, and RNG seems to just hate me even more than the modern remake.
This is what made the game for me. I played it in around '98 in the same scenario and utterly hated it. Skip forward around 1 year and I give it another go, and wow do I become hooked.

A big part of the game's charm is the whole unknown aspect of it. In a modern era with the internet and guides etc, it still holds up superbly in terms of gameplay IMO, but back then when every discovery and fresh idea or event was something new it was even better.

I've sunk over 100 hours into it on hardest difficults on Steam, lord knows how many when originally released. I'd definitely suggest giving it another go or two until it "clicks"

Morrowind. I really wanted to like it and get into it but the ganky leveling system, weird pseudo action RPG combat and even the geography of the maps confounded me to the point that I just gave up.

The first Deus Ex game. Utter blasphemy for a PC gamer but I just...can't...get...past...the horrid voice acting and even more horrid textures. Early voice acting and 3D were terrible. Any time I had to platform I cringed.
Oh man Morrowind is just pure RPG heaven for me (apart from the combat). I think it's a bit of a sad reflection on modern gaming how things such as the geography of the maps are viewed as confounding. For me it was relatively simply map reading and exploration, and it helped give it so muchdepth and satisfaction. Maybe it's a generation thing?

And I still love Deus Ex to this day. I still find it immensely absorbing, atmpsoheric, playable, deep and stunning. I liked the recent HR prequel, but the original is still the best IMO.

Any Elder Scrolls games (well, the two I've played). They're just janky as hell. Getting arrested for accidentally picking up someones fork, or hearing the Captain of the guard give an inspiring speech about killing a dragon then some asshole interrupts and asks me if I get to the Cloud District very often, story critical item just clipped trough the wall, ffs the game just crashed etc. Tons of immersion breakers.

Oddly enough, I don't have much problem with the Fallout games. I think it's because Fallout has a lot of comedic elements in it, plus it's a much simpler world with much more violence in it..it's easier for the mind to fill in the blanks and the jank easier to forgive.

Gothic I didn't get past the first area. I tried exploring, walked over to some barrels, was struck by lightning and died. W.T.F.
TBF there are no 'areas' in technical sense in Gothic - it's pretty much all open world with no loading screens up until last part of the game. And that lightning? It was the defense system, the great barier that keeps all these nasty prisoners(and you) in. Think of it as a way of employing "invisible walls", known so well from other sandboxes, into the plot. But yeah, although it gets better later, in the beginning Gothic can be damn unforgivable, especially compared to similar sandbox-y rpgs, like Morrowind for example.

Be not afraid! Human Revolution is a prequel to first Deus Ex so you can safely start from it.
OT: Arcanum - i was huge fan on first Fallouts, so i couldn't wait to try Another Great RPG by some of the same people. But it just felt so slow and archaic... Shame, because i really like the idea fantasy/steampunk/wildwest rpg.
