Oppressive totalitarian governments. They're mostly dead. We can move on now.

The evil computer AI. Seriously, can we get the computer AI being in the right and the humans in the wrong for once?
Watch 'Moon'. You keep expecting it to turn into HAL, but that thing is better than R2D2.

Oh and, sorry for the double post.

the commander of a(*cough*your*cough*) squad goes batshit insane and you have to subdue/kill him(it is almost always a guy that goes batshit, because then they can look all cool and overly muscley.).

RPGs that give you virtually nothing to start with, yet expect you the save the world...

"An ancient darkness is descending. The kingdom and all who call it home, are in grave danger. We call upon you, brave soul, to save us from the evil that approaches. Now here's a stick and five bucks. GO FORTH AND CONQUER!"

You're a king! You have a treasure room. Gimme some money you cheap bastard, so I can buy something other than the absolute weakest armor and weaponry... assuming I'm given enough to even buy that.

Humans fighting off hostile near-all-powerful aliens or gods or whatever nonsense. Look, people, WE are the baddest thing on the planet if not the entire universe. Own it, already.
We could take a few fictional non-human protagonists to take us down a peg in a game or two. It won't make it so in the real world.
Thank you, I too think that we need more games about good aliens and evil humans like that game Fire Warrior on the PS2. I really wish games would stop egerly worshipping humans and display them as what they are.

As for my pick of cliche it has to go to being pushed onto an on rails turret shooting section in action games like Call of Duty 4, Gears of War, Dead Space, Killzone 2 and pretty much any other action game these days. You know what I mean, the game suddenly takes control of you and forced you to use a high powered turret rail shooter style to defeat a large number of flying projectiles or enemies on the ground and despite the power of the weapon being forced to use it and not having complete control and the sometimes unfair difficulty certainly makes this a very annoying cliche as I am no longer free to play the game my way.

I find a cliche in gaming to be that something always go wrong for your character. Never is there a level where everything goes as planned because it could actually happen. Things dont always not go as planned, only sometimes.

How's this for a cliche: The Helicopter is NEVER showing up.

When have you ever played a game where the thing getting you the hell outta Dodge has landed exactly where it was meant to at the pre-determined time?
Um, left 4 dead. I mean sure the helicopter crashes, but it does land where its meant to and picks you up.

OT: Ridiculously muscular guys with voices that sound like they could be speaking through a rattling tuba.

Didn't resident evil 3 get you out at the right time?

I know resident evil 5 did, kinda.

If the main character can't talk, he somehow finds a way to have a conversation with everyone else.

The evil king has more health then the 270 pound, 6 foot 8 inch guard in full armor

No kidding. That and the Ancient Prophecy. Why does there always have to be an Ancient Prophecy? Why can't things just happen because they happen?

Key Fetch Quests. Some are actually kind of interesting, like Myst or even Resident Evil 2 (putting the gem in the statue and all that).

Turok, on the N64, however, makes the whole 'puzzle' or 'key fetch' quest... well, you've got a gun that can rip holes in the fabric of space-time, and yet you can't open a door because you haven't found all the missing pieces of some artifact. I mean, what the hell are they making these doors out of? Red Faction at least tried to break this mold by having more destructive environments, but it was just a very cleverly disguised puzzle/key fetch quest.

In Myst, you don't have any such weapon, and in Resident Evil 2, you don't get the rocket launcher (or similarly absurdly-powered weapon) until long after you've solved the puzzles in the police station, and even when you do, the last thing you want to do is blow up the machine that will save Carrie from infection.

I don't mind it that much in single-player games, but in MMOs, even the ones that don't openly announce the 'Prodigal Son/Daughter' rhetoric, it's just plain laughable. Seriously, we go from being heroes to being... well, some guy... amidst millions of 'some guys'.

I'm with you on the ancient prophecy gag, but you don't need an ancient prophecy to be "the only one". That part, at least, has a mythological precedence and plays on our own internal sense of insignificance (loser in real life, badass in virtual life). These are not reasons to play MMOs, so why do they try to push that on us?

This just reminds me of Bard's Tale for Xbox. That game made fun of every fantasy game cliche ever. Just a few and how they were parodied

It's always rats in a cellar (after posing his triumphant defeat of the cellar rats, a giant fire breathing rat defeats him)
The Chosen one (theres a town somewhere with a building full of boys who claim to be the "Chosen One" to drive the evil from the land, you also encounter several "chosen ones" dying in traps in dungeons and whatnot along your journey)
The Key to whatever being far away ("Let me guess, the key to the evil wizards tower is on top of some mountain guarded by a fierce dragon and it's cursed." "What are you talking about? I have the Key right here""...oh, well that was easy")
Crap Dungeon Defense ("Haha, how do you like our impenetrable gate?" "Question, why is the lever to open it on m*my* side." "Well... um... Who designed this place?!)

I highly recommend that game solely for it's comedic content

Crappy wooden/sheetrock doors that are completely impassable despite the fact that you're toting a rocket launcher. And skittery little enemies that are a pain to shoot and empty your magazine very quickly.

i disagree was the doodz in starship troopers not space marines? and they rocked ! its just american space marines that suck more ass than a suck-ass-ometer
