Closed Forum Suggestion.

First of all, I am not sure where I should submit this idea, or to whom, so if anyone would know I would find that useful. One of the things I hate most about forums is moderation. I understand the reasons for it, yet I still don't like it. Nothing is worse to me than when a conversation is closed in the middle of a discussion, and no explanation is offered. My suggestion for making this sight better is.

When a forum is closed, the person who did so should leave a comment as to why. I feel this will offer consonance to the users, and help them stop this from happening in the future. If it is applicable, it would be nice if this included a quote as to what section wan't wanted (if applicable)

Interesting idea, but you can usually tell which topics get the chopping block within the first few posts.

This does actually happen, not always granted, but when necessary it happens. Usually a thread is locked because it causes trolling or the wrong type of conversation (such as the possible offence cause by UnknownIncognito's jokes thread earlier tonight).

Some of the mod staff do. Nilcypher does, for example, and if you look along our latest spray of locked threads they come with comments.

At times there are threads which the mods don't believe need a comment on why they're locked. Something with the title "OMG FUKN HALO" for example is unlikely to have anything subtle which requires explaining.

As much as I, too, would like to see this happen, I feel the need to posit that they're only human, and closing one legitimately shitty thread after another can wear one's tolerance thin, to the point where they begrudge having to deal with it at all, let alone explain why their intervention was required.

the important thing to realise is that a lot of the time, if the reason a thread is locked isn't obvious, they will leave a note. If they don't you really should have known better

The reason that I am saying this is that I started a thread about what people thought were the best Ayn Rand Books (with a poll) After a day or so it finally got some posts, and I was responding to someone's comment about her Everyman characters(which I disagreed polity with) and I finished, it was discontinued. There was a comment at the end about how this would be better suited as a discussion without a poll as the last post. Maby that is what you are talking about. It didn't say that it was the one who band it, that is why I thought it was un explained.

Its a tough job, on another forum, one way smaller than the escapist the mods would just edit someones post because of something syupid or offensive he said. So as to not have to lock a thread. Yea I know they do that here too but still. I apreciate it

Sounds curtious, in theory at least...
A forum I modded once upon a time had a nice interface. When we went to lock a thread we had a drop down box where we had to select a broad reason for lockage, so when someone checked the locked thread, it would read "Topic has been locked due to [trolling]" so people knew what was up

This is actually a pretty good idea... Obviously it would be done when necessary only, as many people have already pointed out, some threads that are closed quickly really don't need that much explanation as to why... but in any other circumstance this would really be a good procedure.

I would like to see a forum that only exists one day each year but has no mods.
