I have noticed a few terms that people use interchangeably but should never be.

Grill / Barbeque. Okay you want to call the apparatus the by both monikers fine. as a cook you want to use both? fine. You want to sell grilled food as Barbeque or Barbeque as grilled. Nope. Not fine grilled food is generally cook at a very high temperature for a short time. Barbeque is cooked for hours at a very low temperature. They are very different, they do not taste the same, no not even relatively.

Tea Pot / Tea Kettle. You heat up a tea kettle and pour it into a tea pot along with tea to make tea. You do not boil anything in a tea pot. You're a little tea pot short and stout, hell no you bastard you have a whistle thus you are boiling thus you are a sodding kettle. Granted some eastern tea kettles are both as they can both steep and boil tea yet if not call it the right thing.

Turban / Turbine. Okay so this is what prompted me to make this post. My friends started talking about "Wind Turban" and I was like what the hell are they talking about. I can not even explain the difference in the two it is to vast.

Edit: Additions
Chemicals / ??? (lexical cap for toxins?) I if you want to stop ingesting chemicals you need to stop eating drinking an breathing all forms of matter and somehow only intake pure energy. Water, food, you, matter. It is all 100% chemicals

Theory / Hypothesis. Oh look you have an idea you want to test, you so not have a theory not even close. in fact if you are in fact the first one to think of said hypothesis (which is what you have) good luck on it becoming a theory within the decade. and yes Gravity still a theory, not a law, it explains laws so goes evolution so do all theories.

I did not learn the difference between grill and bbq until recently, for i always assumed that everything cooked on a grill was bbq, due to the use of bbq sauce.

On topic: I guess i dont like calling devices smaller than a laptop a computer, like tablets or phones, even though anything that computes is one.

And blankets and comforters, my siblings and i conflated the two for quite a long time.

Refute/Repudiate

I always find it really annoying when someone thinks refute means to disagree.

Racist and prejudiced.

This one gets me to no end. No, someone who doesn't like the Xbox is not "racist" toward xbox gamers. Someone who doesn't like the French is not "racist" toward French people. One cannot be "racist" against Muslims or Christians. None of these things are a "race."

Latter/Later/Ladder

This goes for this site, specifically. "Latter" means "the last of the options presented". "Later" and "ladder" do not. Yet somehow, EVERYONE on this site seems to use the latter two terms. ;_____;

Versus and verse. One is Latin for against and is not a verb, the other can be a verb but means to recite poetry at someone.

Liberal / progressive / democrat and conservative / republican. Not all rectangles are squares, people!

The difference between democratic party and democratic system is especially important. All candidates are part of the democratic process, but not all of them are democratic, being members of the democratic party. The english language annoys in this instance.

Retard / Mentally Disabled.

Retard is an insult for people acting like a derp/someone or something acting ireprehensibly stupid. Mentally Disabled means they have an actual medical condition to do with the mind, whether psychological or biological.

Atheist / Belief System / Religion

When I say "I'm an Atheist", it means I do not practice any religion, or believe in any god(s)/higher power.
It's not religion.
It doesn't necessarily mean I believe in evolution.
It doesn't mean I wear a fedora.
It doesn't mean I worship Satan.
It doesn't mean I believe in "nothing".
It doesn't mean I'm a feminist.
It doesn't mean I'm a an activist of any kind (Go fuck yourself "Atheism+" and everyone involved in that tumblr level of fucking stupidity).

Bigot/Homophobic

I couldn't think of another word for hating Homosexuals, so please excuse me for using only part of what bigot means. One thing I've noticed a lot is people calling some a Homophobe if they hate gays, or usually, just don't believe in gay marriage. Unless I've confused myself, which is always a likely option, when you have phobic/phobia at the end of something, it means someone has an irrational fear of something. If you call someone a homophobic, you aren't really saying they hate gays, they are more afraid of things that are the same, or in the political sense, they fear gay people for reasons they can't explain. Bigot is hating someone based on sex, race, sexuality, etc. Another thing, just because someone doesn't believe gay marriage is right that they are bigots. Westboro, yes, random people who don't believe in gay marriage but really don't care in the end and still treat them like humans, no.

Seperation of Church and State/ Teaching about Religions

I only speak from my experience at Texas schools. I believe that school should have a comparative religion class, to show differences and similarities between religions. The reason why is for another day. The problem seems to be that if anything from any active religion is brought up (Christianity, Hinduism, etc.), someone from one side will spout Seperation of Church and State. From my understanding, it's that no government institution can profess one religion to be true, or try to conform people to a certain religion. Teaching about what various religions believe, and their history, is different, and is needed for people to understand others.

It doesn't always. Phobia has more than one meaning.

This is brought up a lot, coincidentally usually by homophobes, and it's not true. The original meaning of the word might have referred strictly to fear, but it's changed over time.

Ignorance and stupidity. Two different terms, while sharing similar concepts do not mean the same thing. I've seen people use these interchangeably when discussing intelligence or lack thereof. Stupidity is lacking intelligence, but an ignorant person can still be intelligent.

Hmmm, I don't know anything about Phobia except by the types of fears they are associated with, and the biology related stuff such as lipids and other things being hydrophobic or hydrophilic, that's why the term confuses me. I assume homophobes was a word made to describe those that hate homosexuals then, independent of other words that use Phobic/Phobia at the end of a word? I'm genuinely curious, cause while English is my primary language, I've always been terrible with word usage.

Well, it's not the only one to use phobia that way. Transphobia, or Islamophobia come to mind. I'm not sure which of them came first though.

Though, I guess you could stretch the original definition a little bit and still fit. People don't tend to hate homosexuals without also fearing them for some reason, the same as any other bigotry.

I get what you mean, and it makes sense that people hate things that fear, not saying that hating Homosexuals is in any way right. So my first point was wrong then, but I learned something today. I would argue if Homophobia was used on anybody that just thought gay marriage was wrong, but don't care if it's legalized, but I only see the term used on groups of people like Westboro Baptist, and other hate groups which is appropriate to label them as such. Thanks for clearing that up, I didn't think of how it has changed overtime and how it can be used other ways.

It is an irrational hatred bred by fear, though.

Especially when you listen to the reasons usually given, as in that if we allow gay marriage humans will go extinct, or the morals of society will be destroyed and everyone will want to have sex with animals and children etc and we will all die in gayness-induced hurricanes.

Or 'it's unnatural' in other words, 'it just sorta creeps me out'.
