I hate Clone Sonic, I don't want any more games with the annoying fuckwit in... I want the 90s Sonic back...

If you're wondering, this is Clone Sonic:

And this is 90s Sonic:

If they made a side-scroller with no voices or gimmicks then that I would play.
There seems to be a clear divide amongst Sonic fans about this.

I hate to break it to you 90s Sonic fans, but as much as Clone Sonic enforces lameness of DragonBall Z Marathon levels, 90s Sonic isn't coming back. He's a dead style. Your pining for his return is reminiscent of your Dad demanding the return of Disco.

Hmm...

Well, depends who'd be the driving force behind it. Nintendo could run with it and make something reasonable, but if Sega did the same thing they've done to recent sonic games, it shouldn't even be attempted. I like Sega and some of the sonic games I love but the last handful have been a bit disappointing to me.

We'd have to see.

it could also be good as a 2 player co-op where you need to use the skills of the 2 characters together in order to solve puzzles etc

how about, a game where Sonic travels through Mario type worlds (the 2d ones) and Mario makes his way through Sonic type levels (thinking of Sonic 2 on the Genesis) the levels would be the same/similar but tailored in a way that Sonic/Mario could progress through it with creativity. Then they have an epic battle at the end, or multiple battles along the way.

Yeah, but SEGA seem to be afraid of making a good Sonic game, they've forgotton what made the original games so good. A good way to start would be to ditch that stupid new big-headed, loud-mouthed replacement and force the new Sonic Team to play the old games for hours on end, maybe that would knock some sense into them. Nintendo would never have done this if they bought Sonic, they would keep what made the old games good, probably even keep the same music.

I wish Nintendo would buy the blue bastard already...

I really sound like an old fart for saying this don't I? I can't help it... Sonic was the first franchise I really got into and I hate to see him shat all over like this...

The average consumer likes change, so Sega, in their infinite wisdom, felt they'd rake in more money by changing Sonic. Change in inevitable, when the 1990's rolled into the 2000's, change happened. Did Vector-man reappear? No, the corporate bastards axed him. As for Sonic, they made him "edgy", and "hip".

In short, I agree with you, Sonic was best as a mute. I mean, look how well the mute theory worked for Valve, John Gordon Freeman.

Don't speak of such unmentionable horror!

Wait, but I just thought of something! Did you ever see the 90's cartoon starring Sonic? It was there that the change happened!

"Uh oh, swat bots! Let's juice, Tails!" *Fwoom*

I can't believe that it was the love of little children which forced Sonic to undergo that dreaded transformation...

Italian "Hey Sonic, I got this bit."
Hog "Why? I've got 7 chaos emeralds and 50 rings."
Italian "Yeah but you go super all the time, I can fly you know."
Hog "Yo! Tails, get your arse over here...You were saying?"

-

Hog "Mario! Get here quick."
Italian "What is it, do you need my help?"
Hog "Yup, water section. Get to it."
Italian "Now its Mario's time to shine!"

One thing I also got from the idea of Mario's "Suit Power"

Could we really be so harsh on Sonic for becoming a Werehog, Wolf Hog, or whatever they are calling him, when we've seen everyone's favorite moustached plumber clad in a Bee suit exploring the vast ocean of space?
Mario's suits don't change the gameplay drastically, do they? It's a platforming game whether he can throw a fireball or not, right? That's the difference.

If getting a mushroom turned the mario games into vertical shmups or Guitar Hero-type games, I think people would complain just as much.

It would only work if...

a) The Mario levels played like Super Mario 3

&

b) The Sonic levels played like Sonic 1-3.

the best way to do it would be to split it into a 2c/3d game. Like paper mario. Sonic takes the 2d, mario the 3d
