I always like the higher stopping power of the 7.62 versus the dinky little 5.56 that the M-16 uses... That and has already been stated, they can take a major beating and still work really well. Not a toy like the M-16... And I have seen AK-47s modified as Sniper Rifles, so don't tell me that they aren't accurate...
Assault rifles are mass produced. They are not inherently accurate enough for a dedicated marksman.

Once manufactured they are placed in a test rig and tested, if the bullets hit in an acceptable grouping they pass if not they fail, some of these guns will shoot better than others.

There are versions of these guns used in squad designated marksman roles they are pulled apart and rebuilt so they are accurate.
So you will see marksman versions of these guns but you would be exceptionally lucky to find one good enough off the rack as it were.

Wait wait wait... The AK47 is more Accurate than the M16 in COD4? Jesus H Christ. I got to wonder how much actual shooting research these developers did (or if they simply don't care).

I mean, don't get me wrong, I lives me an AK. For reals. And I hate the M16 with a firey passion. But the M16 is clearly the more accurate weapon.

I think it comes down to how much recoil you are willing to accept when discussing 7.62 vs 5.56, both are effective cartridges. I think 3 round burst is much more interesting when using 7.62.

Really unrealistic though, the AK47's manufacturing press plates cost about 200 pounds thats why its the gun of choice for poor countries, unfortunately it IS really badly made and innacurate, what ever COD 4's vain claims to realism lead you to believe, oh, and the M16 sticks alot so by default its the M4.

Sadly i've yet to unlock M16 (I think) so i'll just say I like the G36C, carbine and like any true stargate fan the P90.

I prefer the Swedish AK5 in real life. Basically, because it is as reliable as an AK47 in the mud and grub and I can hit stuff from 300 meters away without a scope.

In COD4 though, I prefer the G36.

Seeing as how you start off with it I'm guessing you have at some point unlocked it.

Remember that in practiacal use no assault rifle would be as accurate as in a comupter game.

Both the Ak-47 and the M16 were built around different principles. An M16 is a more acurate weapon, but in the hands of a skilled user who new how to handle it a K was accurate enough. Not as accurate as the M16 but it wasn't that bad. The K is alround tougher and cheaper and has better penetration power and loss less of that power over its range.

Hence why I prefer the Ak in COD4 over the M16 but everyone likes different things.

I also think it should be pointed out that apparently the AK isn't patented, meaning anyone can make 'em. Adds to widespread use somewhat.

EDIT: Ok, I checked this up and it seems I was utterly wrong, although there is a lot of illegal production of the blaggards.

Ok as an actual marksman in a real army who used countless rifles, the next person who calls a RL Assualt rifle "accurate" or "not-accurate" will be getting a 4 page long explanation on Balistics, mostly on External ballistics and why a rifle is as "accurate" as the shooter is.

I gotta use the AK when I play the arabs, and the M4 when I play SAS or other "good guys".

It's just my thing.

But I love me some m16 muffled. Fuck they never know where it came from!

I only play Hardcore so M16 with red dot is a monster.
Barret .50Call for sniping, love the recoil in it.
Scorpion/Uzi with red dot for close quarters.

Yummeh!
